@ssingisking Because it wasn't just the Hastinapur army that Arjun was facing. He was facing many many many other armies as well. Don't forget Balram and Rukhman were the only two people that were not involved in that war. Dwarka's army was the largest army out of all of them and they were on Duryodhan's side, except for Krishna.

@gaurav15984 with regards to cheating, Lord Krishna clearly states in the Mahabharata and in most Vedic literature that committing a sin for the purpose of Dharma is not a sin at all. For example, in this war of truth and untruth, great warriors like Bhishma and Karna could only be defeated through deception. Deception was a major factor because of the Kauravas use of deception in the past to defeat the Pandavas as well as the fact that this war could not be won fairly.

read wikipedia for details on final fight against arjuna and karna.. karna had almost killed arjuna the previous day, but krishna set the sun early so the fight discontinued. next day, karna'a Brahmastra failed to work coz of parshurama's curse. karna still had a very great chance to kill aarjuna...a deadly snake offered to sit on karna's arrows whose bite would've killed arjuna..but karna refused to take its help. also, krishna and hanuman's presence on arjuna's rath shielded him from his death

@all :- KARNA was the best archer :-There are many incidents and quotes which indicate the might and greatness of Karna. One of those incidents is during Karna's war with Arjuna. When Arjuna's chariot was shifted a few inches back by the impact of one of the arrows shot by Karna, Krishna being Arjuna's Sarathi(charioteer) praised Karna.

Took all of two days to kill Susharma, got killed by his own son Babruvahana, and came a cropper against ordinary thieves looting Dwaraka.

Using a divine weapon against a crop of warriors proves the power of the weapon, not Arjuna's valour. The warrior who accepted the so called "defeat" from Arjuna themselves had plenty of such divine weapons, which they refrained from using in that battle. Wonder what the consequences would have been, if they HAD used those weapons.

@SamSungSamSung9999 Sorry buddy but Babruvahana was Arjuna's son. He didn't kill Arjuna. Arjuna departed to Himalayas with rest of the Pandavas. He defeated Karna in this battle without ever having to use divine weapons. If you read Mahabharat, it clearly depicts that all these warriors were going to attack together at Duryodhan's command and so Arjuna used Mohini to incapacitate them and finally, Susharma was never fighting with Arjuna staying at one place. He was straying Arjuna out of battle.

(1) Bheeshma Drona, and Kripacharya were very old people, too, but young people were struggling to match them in battle, so not sure how important the age factor was.

(2) It is generally believed that people had a long life span in those days - how else do you explain Gandhari, Savitri etc. having a hundred children? That would also explain why Bheeshma et al. were still fighting fit despite their age.

@deadman1061, (3) Babruvahana has no intention of fighting Arjuna at all, knowing Arjuna was his own father. But Arjuna kept goading him, until he got somewhat serious, and to his horror, ended up KILLING Arjuna (all accounts I have read say that Arjuna was actually killed, and then restored to life by Princess Uloopi).

(4) Arjuna used Anjalikastra to kill Karna, and by all accounts, that was a formidable weapon.

(6) Unlike the Ramayana war, where ALL divine weapons were used at the drop of a hat, the Mahabharatha war was fought largely AVOIDING weapons of mass destruction (WMDs?). Only weapons like Nagastra, Shakti, Anjalika etc., that only killed individuals, were used FREELY.

Still, you have valid points. I think it is a question of perception.

@SamSungSamSung9999 I don't think it's a question of perception. Karna himself used divine weapons to kill Ghatotkacha (he used his one chance to use the Vajra). If he was such a great warrior why couldn't he fight Ghatokacha one-on-one without divine weapons and beat him. Also, he tried to use Brahmastra on Arjun but it didn't come to him because of Parshuram's shrap. Also, Susharma's job was to run in a manner so that Arjun doesn't go near the Chakavyuh.

King Babruvahan didn't kill Arjun but he merely made him unconscious like Lakshman. Already he was very very old by then. He fought Mahabharat at very old age so imagine his age when he fought Babruvahan?? Also, Arjun was alone in this war and all were attacking him from all the sides. So he had to subdue them.

@pujasur09, agree with you. According to BR Chopra's Mahabharatha, Karna never fought the Gandharvas - Arjuna had already finished the job by the time he got over his intoxication and came out ready to battle. Also, the Virat yuddha doesn't prove anything other than the power of Sammohanastra.

Also, Duryodhana was not an idiot. He MUST have had proof - i.e., Karna fully matching Arjuna over a long-drawn battle/competition, most probably when Karna challenged Arjuna for the best archer title.

@gaurav15984 Gaurav - what do you mean by fair and square. If you paid attention you will realize that Arjuna didn't kill Bhishma, he wounded him. He couldn't be killed by any human/god or even by himself unless certain conditions got satisfied. This is because he was wearing the iccha mrityu kavach - which he was bound to wear by oath. Hence, there couldn't be a fair fight with him.

I am from Kirat tribe. The caste system was created by vedic Aryan especially Brahmins. In Rig Veda book, dating 2000BCE, it is mentioned that Kiratas fought against this system but Kiratas lost the war and so this system has been in existence since.

Divya astras did "touch" karna in this war you can see. In mahabharat too arjun had broken all of karnas bows and other things and even rath before killing him. Karna could easily have called another rath as sri krishan said. He got down and started fiddling with his rath because he knew that if he remained on rath his death is waiting for him , so it was his strategy to just keep fiddling with the wheel of the rath. Having said that he is considered second only to arjun in the art of archery.

Infact Gita signifies the essence and deeds of Krishna. So I am not sure, why Gita would give me more insight into Arjun, except that he was a good listener and posed some really good questions. But the values you mention -- bravery and courage -- atleast in the Gita are exemplified by Krishna!!

-Geeta is not doubt an independent subject of study. Ab beautiful (I dont wanna use word philosophy but I dont find better word) philosophy itself. Good insight into the life. But when you are trying to interpret Arjun you cannot take Geeta out of the context of Mahabharat and evaluate him.

-Philosophical part yes, its eternal , timeless, ageless but characters should be evaluated by not taking geeta out of the context of Mahabharata.

If you look at the original comment, he was using the Gita as a reference to Arjuna's valor. Which, is what I commented, that Gita alone does not do much for Arjun.
