amazing rendition of this song by one of the truly singular talents in american music. and no, my name isn't Shelby Lynne's mom. saw her do this live. goosebumps!
Like weeping on an issue of Architectural Digest...
Though I like Dionne's version better, this video is a salute to form and design. When things like curved coffee tables were considered art as well as function. Just beautiful.
Shelby Rocks
Incredibly beautiful music and lovely video. Shelby Lynne is one of the most tasteful and passionate artists, particularly amidst the crap that passes for music these days.
talk about no heart in the music by the singer. either she doesn't know what real musician ship is, or the writer of this song made is so incredibly boring, and uncaring that the singer had no a lot to work with. either way it's sad this song can get this much attention
@crowdroar This song was written by Burt Bacharach, one of the best songwriters ever...it was first recorded by Dionne Warwick around 1963...and after that Cilla BLack, Dusty Springfield and others. Shelby Lynne does this in her own style, and many people love it. This song was one of the first songs in pop music to have polyrhythms, so there is quite a bit of history behind it. You might want to educate yourself a bit on music before you become a critic, just saying...it is someone's art.
I love this video...very creative. I love her rendition of this great old song, too. One of my favorites. Nice to see something pared-down and not over-the-top like so much of today's garbage. It's a very elegant, tasteful production. Shelby Lynne should be much more popular than she is.
Beautiful song and a very stylish video. Beautiful use of DOF and focus pulls. The arrangement of the song is very basic and beautiful and the video reflects it with its minimalist look and coldness. The colours are damped - even the red decor on the table is muted. The only vibrancy is in the blue in her eyes when she asks why he wont love her. Wow - every element is perfect and sympathetic. Her voice is beautiful
A long time ago,Shelby had a music video on, what mtv cmt?, she had short slicked back dark hair and sang a really rockin song. Anyone remember this? what was the song? is there a video somewhere? thanks.
@iamcornelius Are you talking about "Slow Me Down" from 1995? I remember that was on CMT, if that's the one you're refering to. They should have it on YouTube.
My favorite Bacharach/David song. Shelby's minimalist arrangement really shows it's a truly great and unique song! Of the more orchestrated 60's versions, Dusty Springfield's is my favorite. What a voice!
I wish somebody could have sent this gal to me for instance....I'm not saying she's a bad singer, but she's doing this song ALL completely wrong - in my life-time this is an absolute CLASSIC song....and the sort of sloppy way it's been done here I think is a real slap in the face to Burt Bacharach. Sure if u want to take a simple small sort of jazz combo take on it - I think the arrangment here is all wrong. She made it TOO small-suffering perhaps a bass, drums and probably a good muted Trumpet
wrong material for definitely the wrong singer - Oh I'm sure this artist probably admires that song or perhaps a keen inside executive man in her inner circle might have thought it a good idea at the time, There's some almost nice sounds in this track, the almost jazzy background, pretty good jazz piano licks, I find the vocalist so cold and completely UNATTACHED to this marvelous song, I mean u listen to it and it's like 3 seconds later NEXT ok-just totally uneventful rubbish. I wish.....
This gal has a sweet true voice, but the 'big' production versions from the 60's are much better. The orchestra in that song (in the classic versions) is an integral part of what makes it so great. And man, when Dusty or Cilla let it go, you really feel the heartache. Check out Cilla Black's version; the one where she's in the long yellow dress. Or Dusty Springfield's.

It really annoys me when people spread rumors of some celebrity being gay. First off, WHO CARES what they do in their bedroom?? Second, GET A LIFE OF YOUR OWN!!
"shelby's gone gay" get stuffed you twathead feckwit scrotum sucking ponce! accept a good singer and a good song for what it is - brilliant! ..... and get yourself some therapy you repressed wanker!
@mrzero1982 To me the video is far more than okay...the song is set in the late 60's... note the apartment: The clock with hands A tea pot to make coffee, stainless steel canisters A newspaper, not the internet A phonograph and LP record A cassette deck A rotary phone And then the piece de resistance, A selectric typewriter and not a word processor, then the close, the clock with hands again The video is a tribute to an aesthetic age, a design age still not surpassed, a masterpiece.
@gurlsingerfan I completely agree with your appraisal of the video elements. Stylish, and early modern touches give this performance an edge. I also like the shot of the conglomerate style flooring at the end with the shattered coffee cup. And the handwritten letter in a time when handwriting was an art and letters were more than random facebook meanderings!
I really love these kind of design elements and I wish more videos had this kind of simple yet arresting presence.
@gabddasilva Ah, you have a good eye, a fan of design? The taps seemed a bit modern to me compared to the rest of the fixtures, but plumbing fixtures I don't know (I am sometimes surprised by design of apartments as far back as the 1930's). The kettle is certainly too modern for the period of the 60's, it looks like a post modern Michael Graves piece. But overall, the apartment captures the "pre-digital" age beautifully, "a classic feel" to use your words. And no, your not blind :-) good eyes
Amazing version, unbelievable recording, Shelby is always incredible; but this video just does not do any of these efforts justice. Love the song though.
I've always loved this Burt Bacharach tune. It's been covered by a lot of talented performers.....and Ms Lynne here gives her powerful voice & talent to her own version. VERY enjoyable....THANK YOU for posting it! :)
How absolutely artistic is that video?! The great '60's decor, with vintage household items, coffee made the old fashioned way, the phonograph record, the rotory phone, the typewriter, the analog clocks...why does this still seem like the RIGHT way to do it? Simple to use, beautiful to look at, such real design. The song and Shelby of course is so wonderful, but the video made it an experience I return to often. Who directed it?
