Patti recorded the first version of this song (under the title of "Hero") but I guess her label at the time, PIR (Philadelphia International Records) didn't think the song was suitable for Patti. I think it was originally intended to be on the "I'm in Love Again" album.

@shazamcomics Patti recorded this in November 1982 but it's hard to tell. Her version never did get put out. I forgot who actually did it first but I think the first version was recorded back in 1981. Patti's was probably the fourth rendition of this.

As I listened to this song it made me think of our Savor Jesus Christ who's word said they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength...they shall mount up as eagles. Jesus died and placed His life beneath our wings that we might have the oppertunity to fly above sin & make it to the promise land, HEAVEN. Patti Labelle is a true vocalist. Patti uses her vocals as an instrument. Notice how she goes in a childs voice to make certain notes sustain a certain pitch. She is really awesome at what she does. She is very good. I mean trully Aretha Diana, and Donna and some of the other girls are just great. But when you hear Patti, you know its Patti. As a matter of Fact, if you listen to her sing with someone she can't cause she is so use to Singing on a high scale, and most singers sing in a minor.

I call it a Bette Midler classic as she is the more well known person who sang this song as wiki states ... Although the song has become primarily associated with Bette Midler, other versions of the song were released to the public years before Midler's. I didn't say it was her song so don't be so petty!!

one can only refer to it as a classic if the artist performing it comes after the original. this performance is 4 years b4 bette even thought about the song. so hence you cant take a song that predates another artist and refer to it as their classic. a more apt wording would be "a song later made famous by bette midler". so petty im not being.

You know I love your videos that you post of Patti. And I know you're a HUGE Patti fan also. But I think angelmannj's point is valid. More or less it is like saying a parent looks like the child which isn't true. The child has the parents genes so the child looks like the parent. Angelmannj isn't disputing that Bette did the song or it was made more famous by Bette, but that Patti did it first.
