  • I was at the first night at Tramps. Great show. Hovercraft kicked it off featuring Vedder incognito, then Foo Fighters doing their first ever NY show, and finally the Watt and friends spiel. A memorable evening. Of all the sold out shows I'd been to at Tramps, never before or after was it as packed to the gills as that night.

  • Mike Watts GF or wife was in Black Flag

  • My parents saw them on this tour!

  • Fuck all of you rookies... This is greatnesss

  • so was Watt in Black Flag or no?

  • God bless the man or woman that recorded this

  • Dudes, does everybody know when this happened?

  • @julioacfigueiredo

May 1995, it says somewhere in the video.

  • @bigmuffexpress Thanks!

  • Everything about this is sexy; Dave Grohl's ballsy guitar, William Goldsmith's skin-pounding beastiness, Eddie Vedder's quiet coolness...

And of course, Mike Watt. He is just gorgeous.

  • daves a good guitarist.

  • jamming something econo for sure... mike watt is bertrand russell

  • @nobody36 It died :(

  • @TheMasterOfReality55 ran outta lives huh?

  • I watched this several times last night and went to sleep humming it.

  • Mike's playing at a bar a few blocks from my place tomorrow night. After hearing this, I think I'll have to go see him.

  • Why didn't he sing it on the album, and at this tempo? This is perfect.

  • Wait.. Isn't that Will Goldsmith om drums there? O_O

  • @robonl Yes indeedy!

  • good GOD this first song and the last jam is incredible !!!

  • I read (maybe in this thread) that this is the first thing that Ghrol did after Nirvana. I wonder if Watt was able to share perspective with him.

  • @LeotheOrangeCat i saw this tour at tramps NYC. foo fighters opened for them and it was after nirvana dissolved...

  • lol at Watt's face @0:55 looks like he's really drunk or high....

  • @JacobWeinberg Watt's a 'goofy face factory' during gigs. A riot to watch.

  • @mikekole lol, that's awesome

  • Hey childUK, that song is ''one reporter's opinion'' off the ball-hog or tugboat album and off double nickles on the dime by the Minutemen.

  • This show is still the best show I was ever at.

  • What's the song at 7:30? the third one?

  • Watt-Vedder-Grohl = Perfect combination.

  • excuse my ignorance...But what is the first song called and what albums its from?

  • yo! it is chinese firedrill from ball-hog or tugboat? by mike watt. dig it!

  • Cheers, it's such an amazing song

  • you're right, dude! the song is bit faster on the record btw

  • great album

  • Frank Black from the Pixies sings it on the album

  • Its on ball hog or tugboat. great album tons of amazing duets

  • Mike Watt = God

  • YR THE SHIT WATT !

  • fuckin good music

  • Just saw Mr. Watt at the Murcury Lounge 5/9/09 f'n sick. Much respect to Mike and the Missingmen! Had an awesome band that went on before him from Japan!

  • Respect to the Watt. x

  • Ya gotta love Watt. Saw him open for the Chili Peppers and Flaming Lips in '04. He walks out on stage, starts tuning his bass. The crowd doesn't even acknowledge him. Then he starts just CRANKING on it. They must've thought, "Goddamn, that roadie can play"

  • seemingly every musician ever collaborated on that mike watt album. eddie vedder, the beastie boys, sonic youth, nirvana, bernie worrell, flea, etc etc etc

  • It was basically a who's who of 90s alternative music. Sexual Military Dynamics w/Henry Rollins-freakin BADASS. J Mascis lays down 12 Mins of SCORCHIN guitar on Maggot Brain. With a sort of Jazz fusion vibe throughout the whole record, it was one of the most innovative efforts of the 90s.

  • Awesome video! I watch a lot of concert vids and this is one of the best. My kudos to the camera crew and editor. Excellent stuff.

Watt rocks, whoever he is playing with. Can't wait until he gets back from Japan.

  • Oh it sent tingles up my spine!

That super tight hot guitar tone playing in point counterpoint with mr. watt and dem drums blows my mind!

The ball hog record kicks ass, and I've seen em live, but that this recording has so many wicked subtlety and tight playing.

    phukin' hot!

  • aaooohh yeah nothing left to sayyy....great i sayyy

  • year???

  • Watt is so handsome and masculine...I love him and his voice, he's THE MAN.

  • Keep tearin it up watt yr a legend.

  • dave is just soooooooo sweet x

  • After watching those guys play Chinese Fire Drill, I just wanna learn the song!

  • Wlliam goldsmith was a great drummer. He just played differently. I am obviously a giant fan of grohl's drumming but shit you can't expect William to be exactly like Grohl in playing. William Goldsmith and Nate Mendel has been two of my fav bands Sunny Day Real Estate and Foo Fighters. It is cool look back at the early days of the foo. Mike watt kicks ass. I got to meet him at warped tour. This line up is a trip. Will someone ever download Big Train on Jon Stewart again?

  • Why this pointless argument? You aren't going to change eachother's mind, so just enjoy the muzak.

  • For once, Will Goldsmith doesn't sound like the most crappy drummer in the universe...

  • hes not, listen to someof the old foo fighters stuff. hes great hes very very fast.

  • The albums were all Dave, except two tracks on TC&TS. Speed isn't everything by the way: power, precision and technique are all. Dave has all of those in bucketfuls. Will didn't have nearly enough of them. Why do you think he went down with carpal tunnel syndrome?

  • i know dave did, he did the self titled record, TCATS and half of TINLT, but if you listen to the live stuff, will did a great job. trust me, im a huge dave grohl fan, and he is better then both will and taylor but will was not a bad drummer. him and dave just werent on the same page. and will hit very hard. thats probably why he had carpal tunnel, thats not why he left, but thats probably why he had carpal tunnel

  • Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, Will ruined most live performances by the Foos. Dave hits even harder than Will, and did it for longer than Will, and Dave hasn't gone down with CTS.

  • i agree, will sucked

  • I find Dave hits a lot harder in most cases, but I haven't exactly studied Goldsmith a lot. But I'm pretty sure he got his carpal tunnel syndrome because he plays with his hands side ways. Not good for your wrists. You shooouuuld be playing with your palms facing down.

  • Dave, Taylor, John Bonham, and many other "big" drummers play French grip (thumbs up), too. William was way too stiff with holding his sticks and using his wrists, though. If you watch the video of him and Dave playing with David Bowie in 1997, you'll see how stiff he keeps his wrists while Dave, playing the same part, doesn't. William otherwise is a great drummer and I'm pretty sure he fixed his technique, since he still drums with the Fire Theft.

  • Will was fantastic on the first Sunny Day Real Estate record. He just ruined his wrists from hitting the skins so hard.

  • He ruined his wrists by playing badly. He had no technique. Dave banged the skins longer and harder - apparently he still plays drums in private every day - but he had the necessary technique and so has never had CTS, or even RSI.

  • A reverse-body Thunderbird! They're rare as fuck...

  • my last name is carducci...cool.

  • anybody know the name of this song?

  • chinese firedrill

  • The second one if "Piss-Bottle Man."

  • is*

  • amazing....very good riff....love it....

  • Yeppers at SDSU - saw it! Watt with Foo and Hovercraft (Ed Ved and wife/girlfriend) Watt was sick (like always) and I helped him load his gear into the van. I also met Dave G by the soundboard. Verrry cool.

  • I remember watt being sick and stopping the show to yell at kids moshing, all in all one th best shows i have ever seen

  • Who would have thought that the FF would turn out to be so huge??

  • was this at the king theater in seattle?

  • The entire 'Ball-Hog or Tugboat?' album is this good. Go look it up, you will not be disappointed.

  • dave grohl is the one!

  • for me Ed is the one!

  • For me it's Watt! YEAH

  • Watt , your the man

I loved Frank Blacks version of this !!

  • when was this??

  • late 94'-95'

  • Cheers, hell of a lineup, not saying its a replacement for the Minutemen but all great musicians

  • who's playin drums? don't recognize him

  • It's William Goldsmith on drums

  • holy shit, from SDRE??????

  • Hell yes :D

  • goddamn i loved that band, Diary and Pink Lp most of all.

    great times.

  • Yep, Goldsmith was with Foo Fighters at the time. The Foos were opening for Watt on this tour, which is why he and Grohl are there.

  • this is real good..XD sayz thx

  • this is so fucking great. eddie and dave are in some great company here. mike watt is such a towering figure on the indie scene (the MINUTEMEN!!!) and deserves so much more credit than he's gotten. a superb bass player and genuine human being...

  • i never thought something like this exist.thx i try to get it.but how any one help.....

  • Wow, you may be the most stupid poster on youtube ever.

  • i caught 2 dates of this tour ...they went down as 2 of the greatest shows i have ever been to.

  • actually i have this entire show on tape. its a 3 camera edit from Chicago i think....man this shit was amazing

  • I saw this show in NYC that summer. The Foo Fighters' first record hadn't even come out yet. Kurt Loder from MTV was outside trying to scalp a ticket. It became this super-hot ticket in NYC once word got out Vedder & Grohl were playing w/Watt. I think the Beasties did a tune also and that burnout Evan Dando.

  • @tcbwalsh I was there too...first night of the two at Tramps in April 1995...surreal...heard that people with tickets could not get in on the second night...my mind is still blown that i was there...there was a rancid pit...they'd never get away with this line-up again in a tiny venue...maybe when we are a bunch of old f**ks

  • Hey Justin, I've tried quite some time to find this song, could you or someone else please tell me the name of the album this song was taken from. Many thanks

  • Ball Hog or Tugboat is the name of the Album. Came out in 95, but its out of print.

    Check ebay or amazon

  • Dave Grohl is not a phony, though I'm unaware of his ass sucking propensity. He's a great song writer, drummer, and guitarist. Though I love these guys, I'd love to see this song done by Watt and Frank Black (like on the album).

  • when was thatt!??

  • i suppose around '94.

  • wow !

    tnx

  • 1995

  • when was this ?

  • thank you youtube/whomever posted this video....dave and eddie and mike on the same page...this video needs to be saved forever and go down in history

  • mad.

  • isnt it wierd ......can u see the reputed bass player sing......the reputed singer playing rythm....the reputed drummer playing guitar (dave grohl)?????

  • wow this really kicks alotta ass ive only been gettin into watt and the minutemen for the last couple of days i must say he is amazing. good stuff

  • Mike Watt was the bass player in a band called the minutemen in the early 80's then started a band called firehose in early 90'late80's he also has toured with bands like the stooges (iggy pop) he's one of the most respected bass players ever and deservingly so!

  • what was the first song they played called?

  • "Chinese fire drill" Or "trying to learn latin in a chinese fire drill"

  • This is what YouTube is all about. This is one of the best videos I've seen to date.

    Classic

  • oh!!!!!!!!

    genial

  • Too bad the spiel about how cats percieve the world got cut off. I'd like to talk to watt about any subject.

  • Wow! I never thought I'd get to see clips from this tour. Thank you!

  • reminds me of sugar.

  • 1995

  • this is ridiculous!! Thank you! This is truly one from the vault.......Unbelievable...treasure

  • what year is this from and does anybody else have any other songs from this show?

  • It's got to be the late '90s. That's when the album came out.

  • That T-bird sounds awesome!

  • this is beautiful. watt is the man. no wonder blood sugar sex magic is dedicated to him.

  • It's awersome!

  • Wow! God Bless You Tube! I would never have been able to see this without it!

Now I know how Mike Watt wanted this song to sound like and how he felt when he was singing it.

  • Three legends!.... props to MR WATT

  • Whoa! thats eminem playing drums!!!

  • they launched the foo fighters when they opened this tour. B4 with fIREHOSE tour, they filmed their vid "walkin' the cow" and I was in it at First Av just like I was in Walt Mink's video and Descendents "Livage" cover at 1st Ave. Check 'em out!

  • I've had this bootleg for years - thanks for posting!I saw this tour in Cleveland in 1995 and everyone was so psyched to see Ed Vedder...he played drums with his wife's band Hovercraft. He played with a blond wig and sun glasses on...

  • Does anyone have a valid link for this clip?

  • oyes tu video esta muy bueno esos artistas son de lo mejro que hay quisiera que me mandaras el link donde lo bajaste para tener ese video por favor

  • Respect

  • This a great video, Watt's on fire! Thanks for posting. It's particularly ace version of Piss Bottle Man but dammit, tune that bass!

Does anybody have any more interview footage? Watt's speils are most entertaining.

  • Actually the name of the song is "Chinese Fire Drill", but I do agree, it's great

  • the first song is chinese fire drill, but the second song (the one for "his dad") is piss bottle man.

both right! lol. and yea damnit, more interview footage is needed

  • dave is a great musisian...you should know more about dave to judge him...but as somebody previously said its a personal opinion

  • Wow. This belongs in a museum or something.

  • king of bass!

  • I gave the reason 'its all about personal preference', in other words, personally Dave Grohl doesn't appeal to me.

  • wow, Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder together on stage. Two of my musical heroes! And Mike Watt too! He's so cool. Thank you for sharing this clip(:

  • Watt is the man.

  • i'm afraid these days there is no such thing as original.

  • You idiot, THAT GUY is Mike Watt..Eddie Vedder's HERO. He just WISHES he was Mike Watt.

  • I saw one of these shows in '94 , it was amazing. Dave jumped behind the drums for a few songs and the Foo Fighters opened. They had just put the band together and the album wasn't even out yet.

  • Eddie Vedder is gay. Watt rules. Grohl kicks. Awesome.

  • so friggin` what! kudos to all four! LOVE rules, man!

  • I feel the same way about Grohl, i have no idea who the guy in the middle is, but after watching him for the past 8 minutes i wanna kick him in the nuts

  • fuck you... you don't have to watch this

  • i didnt say i didnt like it, just i dont like dave grohl, im just saying, its all personal preferance, if youve got a problem with that kil yourself, because your never gonna get anyones respect, and your gonna have a lot of trouble gaining friends.

  • does anybody have the performance they did on the Jon Stewart show? i loved that performance and haven't seen it since.

  • mike watt is one of the reasons everyone else has a career, and they know it(no disrespect to anyone) mike is a legend and a major influence to everyone
