@Wakipenda, you don't need an icebreaker to explore the Antarctic during the summer season. The ship had some ice strengthening, but it was not designed to hit submerged multi-year ice at speed. Not even the icebreakers can do that.

Ten by four inches is bigger than a fist, but I agree that it's not that big. While the ship was definitely designed with watertight compartments of which two could flood without the ship sinking, something else must have happened. Perhaps the watertight doors didn't close properly? Perhaps there were additional damage, such as cracks?

Also, the ship was not built in Germany, but in Finland. It also had an ice classification, so it wasn't as brittle as ships not designed to encounter ice.

@tupsumato The water went throw the toiletsystem from one compartment to the next and filled all compartments. According to seamen who should know, there was no sectionvalves on the toilet system makeing it imposible to stop the leakages between the compartments. water was just flooding out of the toilets.... and the crew could do nothing.... or so I was told.
