Er 0:56, 'then we advance the magneto half way' Tom says then 'retards' it full way! Full down, fully retarded, Tom says 'that's advanced full way!' Er no, that's retarded full way! But Tom got half way between advance and retard right! So when Tom thinks the magneto spark is fully retarded - (full back) it's er, fully advanced! So much for You Tube demonstrations but Tom learned from somewhere to put the Magneto lever half way! Why not just read direct from the instructions next time Tom?
See 3:13 'and once it's warmed up I don't need to do this...' -Quite right, cos once it's warmed up it's okay for the Magneto lever to remain half way at the starting position! But after the engine fires, particularly on the petrol/ paraffin model, the magneto lever should be put full down where the engine warms up quicker - see his arm not moving to retard the ignition lever at 1:33 :(
These engines were made by a Glaswegian marine engineer who named his engine after the City's River Kelvin!
Kelvin Poppet 12/14 pet/par engine. Almost like two 6/7s bolted together - all parts except crankshafi and camshaft interchangeable. Twin carb. - however not for performance! One carb could be switched off when fishing so it could run more slowly Beautiful, simple and ingenious.
