You've got the right idea. Yet I could imagine the cage around the mic being quite tight and clacking around, which doesn't make much since with the shock mount.
Judging by your cheerleader's outfit, I would say this was for a high-school TV class and not a college level course. Am I right? Even if it were college level, this is still brilliant. When I made boom-mics for productions in high-school I lacked your ingenuity. I wish you the best, and also think you should befriend a welder who will join the sink-strainer, bird-feeder, and paint-roller handle. The rubber-band as shock protection is perfect. :)
No no no. First a dynamic mic as shown just will not do. That mic is designed to work within six inches of the mouth. Any further and the noise will be the loudest thing. Second, the mic will rattle. It just will. Third the covering may look ok but it will knock out the sound above 2khz making everything sound dull. Please what is the upside?
This is a really bad idea, These mics are not made for shot guns, but are met to be used close up, if you use it like a shot gun mic you get little or no sound from it and any sound you do get will be poor, because the mic is to far way to pick up detail noise.
You would be better getting a cheap shot gun and you more the little end up spending the same getting this built
@FructusSum ATR-6250 is not the way to go. The ATR-6550, as I have, is a great mic. I did have to fix it myself (I can solder) after the cord was yanked and performed horribly. Also, investing in the Rode Deadcat is a great idea. Use a lightbulb changing kit with NO SUCTION CUP and a 5/8 hexhead grade 5 bolt punded through the top to mount it to the pole. Any mic clip should attach to the 5/8 bolt, but a 3/8 bolt with a thread adapter may be a better choice.
@htjmartin Uh yup, looks like they have a dynamic mic!!! At least they are kids and will have fun with it... Do not do this if you want decent sound. But if you want SOME sound, uhh, it would work:-)
@TheCyShow I bet you went all over the comments section just to call me a tool. Troll. Well, I was just feeling bad that day because the guys at school teased me for liking cameras again. I had a tooly mood that day. Happy?
Many design flaws in this one. Aside from the poor support that the rubber-band (singular) would give you on the shock mount, the fact that so much glue was used would make this a 'one-off'. As soon as the mount rubber bands break (which it MOST DEFINITELY WILL, rubber dries out), a total reconstruction would be necessary on the shock mount. One way to improve this would be to replace the psudo shock mount with the $40 alternative that she mentioned in the beginning of the video.
the problem is that its still not a directional mic. The birdfeeder dosen't change the fact that if its not a shotgun mic it will still pick up sound in all directions. also I would use about 8 more rubber bands because one wont keep it suspended and it could hit the bird feeder and interrupt your audio
Maybe if you didnt' blow into the camera you wouldn't need a mic.

Ironically your video has horrible audio. Also a boom mic is typically a shotgun mic not a cardioid mic.

@SuperFucker56 I was going with a mic that was the same price that it cost them to build this. There are a lot of much better mic out there, I know.

@lechugastudios While its true that you do need a shotgun mic to be functional, In all fairness, the Shure PG48 is cardiod, not omnidirectional.
