@NancyToday, yes but I've since learned a more efficient method for making large pots, try a YouTube search for "my onggi pot" to see what I'm talking about.
You have some amazing pots there. You really make me wonder what you are doing down in that basin. To bad you didn't get someone to stick the camera down there too. Inquiring minds want to know :-)
Sorry about the lack of detail in this video, it was my first one. The pots are suspended on top of a 3" tall metal ring (inside the basin) with 2 strips of wood spanning it, this way the glaze doesn't pool and collect on the rim, I then hold a brush to the rim of the pot to take off the extra glaze that gathers there so it isn't too thick. I hope that's helpful.
An excellent description. After reading it, I looked again and realized that you are setting the pots upside down (that makes sense) to pour on the glaze. Do you wax the bottom, or do you just pour well? Do you use a liner glaze on these big pots?
Another detail I should have shown, I have a bunch of plastic lids of varying sizes that I place one on the foot of the pot while pouring so the glaze doesn't have a chance to get on the bottom although a bit always manages to get on there and I just wipe it clean while the pot is still upside down. Yes, the pots are already lined with a celadon glaze, I allow the pots to dry overnight after lining before applying the exterior glaze.
Any chance you would share your celedon formula with us???? I went to your web site and just fell in love with your pale celedon glaze. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful pots! Gonna go look at your website too. Saw your Korean videos by the way, it's just stunning to see such mastery. Thank you so much for sharing!
I am planning on posting many more videos that will show the whole process from start to finish, also, I am headed to Korea in December to study with some pottery masters, I'll be sure to have some videos from that experience. Thanks for the comment!
How did you make such a huge pot? Did you spin each section, let them dry to leather hard and then attache them together?

When your making big pots can they be thin as a small plate? or does the thickness have to be thicker? a big pot for holding plants*

@acidfriend47 it helps to have a bit more clay in the wall of a bigger pot.

are the very tall pieces 2 pots thrown one on top of the other? or do you add coils?
smcyrone 4 years ago
I throw these pieces in sections, one on top of the other. Though I'm looking forward to focusing on coil/throwing methods soon.
