My favorite is a brand called "Fit & Active" from the Aldi grocery store chain. It is a 45g bar with 180 cals, 6g fat (2.5 sat), no trans fats or hydrogenation, 5g fiber, and LOADS of vitamins: 20% for each of C, E, B6, B12, Folate, Niacin, Thiamin and Calcium; 15% for each of A, Iron and Zinc, and 4% vitamin D. It's very filling, very tasty, and way better than any other I've tried. Aldi aren't in every state but if you have one go look for these. It's $4.69 for a box of 6 which isn't bad.
It's like she's giving a high school speech class informative speech... awkward pacing, notecards, poor remembrance of the topic, weak transitions and conclusions...
I can tell you about the worst meal replacement bar is the Atkins Sweet & Salty Almond bar. Not only are all the Atkins bars extremely OVERPRICED compared to most other meal bars on the market, this one is so hard you almost break a tooth trying to eat it. It has some honey and NUTS only in this bar with no other filler to make it easier to chew. It's not very tasty either. It's like eating nuts superglued together. It was so bad, I wrote the company about it. I think Zone bars are the best.
another important yet overlooked quality of these and other bars is SUGAR CONTENT.....most of these bars are overloaded with sugar in the name of health...and most aren't even worth buying...you're better off creating homemade bars with protein powder, but that is expensive, too...which sux....
It's unfair to judge an entire brand, also, based on one flavor. There are plenty of flavors of Balance or Zone Perfect that I don't buy because the fiber content is wimpy or too much fat.
Great meal replacement bar recipe! 1 cup uncooked oats 8 Scoops protein powder (I use GNC brand AMP Wheybolic) 1 cup skim milk Mix it up!! (you have to stir for a while) then put it in a pan with wax paper or pam and put it in the fridge or freezer for 30 min -an hour. then All natural peanut butter Honey. I like to add a thin layer (half a centimeter) of peanut butter all over the top of the fudge, then drizzle a dollop of all natural honey on top. Fridge it again! You're good to go
@2TheGuy2 if you cut it up into 8 pieces, its 24 grams of protein, 10 grams of peanut butter (good) fats, and about 15 grams of complex carbs (with a dollop of honey). Very tasty! doesn't travel very well but I eat these for dessert or a snack around the house :)
hehe I just realized the top 4 worst bars are what my family are using to try to lose weight, it isn't working.
And my little brother lives on slimfast bars or used to, no wonder he could never get in shape....
I can't remember this really good bar I found with good overall mineral levels and vitamins, it cost me 3$ for one bar though but it filled me up for 5 hours...
The only brand of "bar" that I eat on her list is Balance Gold. She failed to mention that the vitamin profile on it is quite solid considering the bar is smaller than average.
It has a fair amount of saturated fat b/c the bar contains whey- & milk-protein isolate. I don't mind the sat. fat b/c most bars only contain soy protein, which as a male I try to avoid, so a blend of soy/whey/milk/casein protein is better than 100% soy.
The whole point of a "meal replacement" bar or shake or anything else is to have it serve as a viable substitute over a big plate of healthy foods! These are just cheap calories with no nutritional value.
Something worth checking out is Shakeology. The ingredients speak for themselves....
Okay... Most ppl do NOT use these to replace meals, but to give a protein boost for very active, athletic people... and most of these bars are not the ones active people eat.. its not about a diet, but a energy and protein... DUH!!! Most people know that whole foods and unprocessed and unrefined foods are the way to go... If people want to lose weight..then eat right... simple.. Personally, I eat the Cliff bars...
how about the top 5 best? wow we could have read the back ourselves bitch. tell us what we should buy, and its not about fucking taste if your trying to loose weight.
This video is not entirely accurate. PowerBar Performance has never been advertised as a meal replacement bar. PowerBar Performance has always been promoted as a pre-workout bar mainly for endurance athletes. That is why there is only 3 grams of fat. Anymore fat would compromise the workout or performance of an endurance athlete. I trust Josh cox (American 50K record holder) and Chris Carmichael (Lance's coach) when they promote PowerBar, even though they are getting paid to use PowerBar.

everyone, no bars are good, just eat an apple, or a banana, any fruit or vegetable , they are filled with fibre, don't have too much calories, very little or no fat, and are infact tasty, just remember, the first pound lost will be the hardest
I don´t want to reply to one year old comments but I agree. If they make a video of the worst bars then they should say which ones are the best. Like if they only say what not to eat and not what is good and the most healthy to eat. Some candies can have hundreds of calories and wot fill you up.
The best protein bar I've tried(and I've tried most of them) is the Carb Conscious Supreme Protein. Minimal sugar, a good protein/fat mix, and they taste absolutely amazing. Most of the other decent tasting ones have 20+ grams of sugar. But for the additional protein, you might as well have a normal candy bar at that point.
@sctriplefox i checked this bar out there is so much problems with it from 400 calories, to only 2 grams of fiber, and 9 grams of saturated fat that is not a good bar at all. they may taste good but high calorie count and not very feeling with fiber make it a set back, but it does has 30 grams of protein so i guess that is a plus
Damn right...now THOSE are meal-replacement bars. The 5 she listed, imo, are more snacks than actual meals. I eat those types of bars for a hit of protein, not to replace my lunch lol.
Wtf, none of those dumb bars satisfies you. Who can replace an entire meal with 10% of the calories you need per day? Easy to make a top 5 worst bars..
That's the thing about tanning lotion...you have to spread that stuff everywhere in order to get it right...I'm talking on your ears, eyelids, the back of your neck, and all the way down past your collar line!
A better way to take meal on the go, buy a few cans of tuna in water, a few apples, bananas and oranges, and also a few small bags of nuts. That way you have all the nutritious goodness of real food, no synthsis vitamins and will feel full and energetic. Besides, it's a lot cheaper than buying all these protein bars anyway.
I have to agree w/ u on the eating of real food. I only eat protein bars on-the-go b/c they're convenient & usually cost-efficient. "Energy" or "meal replacement" bars are not as satisfying as protein bars. Ppl tend to think they are the same. :-X
@ATD909 Don't get me wrong. When I go to Target from time to time, I might get a box of 6 protein bars from Pure Pro, which each of them have about 20 grams of protein and the box cost no more than $6.59 (tax included). However, I prefer eating regular good food. It's cheaper that way.
I do not trust a protein bar made by a candy bar company. Check the ingredients & if it has high fructose corn syrup, mom & tri-dyglycerides, and other junk, run from them like the plague.
The powerbar performance isn't a meal replacement bar... And it doesn't fill u up because it's used for marathoners and bikers while racing for quick energy. Full feeling = blah while running, and we all know what fiber does to you while running?!?!? Lol...
I wouldn't consider any of these as a meal replacement bar anyway...Personally, I LOVE having a powerbar performance energy bar right before my workout (provide that energy boost I need for P90X), and I've tried the balance and kashi bars (they suck) as a snack.
@cwm2utam Meal Replacements are never a good idea. If you are on the run, at least try to grab a healthy smoothie/yogurt or wrap. Even healthy trailmix on the run is better than replacing your meal with preservatives.
Eat a can of tuna instead. It is cheaper and you get a complete protein intake. Only chug it down with a bottle of water so you won't suffer with the taste.
I'm eating one Labrada leanbody gold bar every day. One has 30g of protein and 30g of carbohydrades (7g of sugar) and 300 calories. They might not be as healthy as organges or apples, but its better to eat that, than being hungry.
But you wont get nearly enough protein if you eat only organes and apples.
Oh , and genetically modified food is better than natural food. It MODIFIED, all faults were removed, so it grows perfectly, as it would grow in nature under perfect conditions, but those perfect conditions are not possible in nature.
I've proved reviews like this wrong years ago. I used Slim Fast (shakes rather than bars) when I was 18/19 for 2 months. I lost 28lbs and went from 38" waist to a 32" (I'm actually 30" now almost). I'm 26 now and I'm still the exact same weight I was when I finished Slim Fast. Tastes excellent too! I also do a reasonable amount of exercise (something many users of Slim Fast fail miserably to do an hence put the weight back on). Slim Fast works and works well.
I just want something that's healthy to eat 3000 calories a day of everyday. I don't want to mess with 17 different kinds of food to get a balanced healthy diet. Why is this so hard to find?
the host is just a "pretty face" she has no idea what shes talking about. These bars aren't healthy, i agree, but saturated fat isn't unhealthy and the whole point of these bars is fit a lot of calories in them so that they can replace a meal! so of course they are going to have lots of calories.
better off making ur own. i got mine from a youtube user named.....herberttriggs (i think thats how u spell his username lol). theyre awesome!!!!!!!!!
They taste the best, but they actually have more carbs than they advertise. They try to pretend like they have half the carbs they really do. They taste like a candy bar though.
This woman is an idiot who clearly doesn't really know what she's talking about
I've tried the top two "worst bars", and they've actually worked great for me (I weigh 130 pounds)-I will admit that the Special K bar works best in conjuction with something else (I eat them with a cube of Edam cheese), but those slim fast bars are really filling by themselves
Slim Fast shakes have an equal amount of calories as the bars and are more filling, though
1. two of the bars aren't even meal replacement bars. Special K actually says in their "Special K diet" that the bar should be eaten with a bowl of Special K or something else and not alone. Maybe some research would do this video well.
2. Who the heck actually only eats these things and expects them to fill you up? 200 calories at one meal is not enough for anyone to keep them properly filled up. You'll send your body into starvation mode if you only eat one of these.
3. Six grams of fat, even if four of them are saturated, is good for you. High fat doesn't make you fat; excess calories make you fat. You still need to get fat in, even though EFA's are preferred over saturated fats. Trans fat is a different story.. They're scientifically proven to be bad for your heart. Saturated fats haven't.
And I know someone will look at my username and comment on this, but I'm not actually fat and my name is not Phil.
I like pure protein bars and muscle milk lite bars. Although I recently switched to muscle milk even though they are less protein because a lot of the pure proteins contain zero fiber (but do have fewer than 200 cals). I don't use them as MRs though...I eat them directly before or after I lift weights for the protein. They serve as a good snack since otherwise I'm STARVING after an intense workout. Usually they keep me going for at least two hours when it's time for a real meal. =)
I agree that the meal replacement bars are typically crap (they contain a lot of junk and taste worse than if they had just spent less and thought about the ingredients). However, the logic of the "dietcom" website sucks. They obviously haven't read Ray Kurzweil, and they don't point out the obvious solution: make your own protein bars. Pure whey protein or pure soy protein (ON whey is close)+Stevia Clear+ soy milk+generic egg beaters+almond butter+3 apricot kernels, cranberries,= great
I am going to take her advice b/c I have tried all of those bars that she named and it does not fill you up a bit if anything it gets you even more hungry. Never again will I purchase. All of that is about the same as a few chips or a cookie.
Take the Balance Gold for example. 210 calories is absolutely fine and 4g of fat isnt a lot either. How is that meant to be one the worst in any way? In fact all the bars aren't that bad. It would be good for taking before the gym or exercise if you can't have a meal.
And She talks B.S.saying things like "experts say" and "this maybe" or "probably won't fill you up" isn't she meant to be educating us, rather than just saying these bars are "the worst."
i 100% agree... protein bars are junk and taste like shit... ur way better off eating a fruit or vegetable cuz they fill u up fast with fewer calories, and they taste a hell of a lot better.
Protein bars make for a convenient snack as well if you're on a High Protein Low Carb diet. Also a calorie is not just a calorie fruits are high in simple carbs in the form of fructose which is easily processed into energy whereas it's a lot more difficult for the body to convert protein into energy.
another reason to refrain from these so called healthy meal replacements(nutritional bars) is all the additives high fructose corn syrup, gaur gum, soy letchin you will lose weight a lot faster if you avoid additives and chemicals and added sugars. most of these bars have the same sugar content as a can of soda + plus the sugar free bars aren't any better they are actually worse stay away from all processed foods
Meal replacements are wonderful. Meal replacements are the best supplement for losing weight. It just depends on which one you choose. Check out my youtube page to learn about a meal replacement product that offers all essential vitamins and minerals for your nutritional needs, is less than 250 calories, and tastes great. It is also affordable. Check it out!
It would be much help if you also mentioned the amount of carbohydrates in the bars. As a runner and type 1 diabetic, this is very crucial information.
True..you should only consume protein bars or meal replacement bars only if you are exercising. I used to eat one bar per day which had 3g of fat but I was hitting the gym 2 hours per day, 5 days a week. If you are eating these type of bars and not exercising you will probably gain weight instead of losing it..
She needs to add something to the act, she just goes on and on, not even poking fun at the candy bars. If you want ppl to listen to your message you need to keep them interested.
just one video out of the whole channel completely changed my opinion.
I lost 20lbs on the slimfast plan
by simply drinking a shake for breakfast eating a bar for lunch and having one regular healthy meal for dinner...I'm still on the slimfast plan and I'm never hungry hmmm
my theory on the meal replacement diet things is that is just doesnt seem like its something that you could do forever, and that when you returned to regular eating plans/habits you would put some of the weigh back on.
so i just want to ask if infact you are still using the slimfast plan and are happy doing it (as i notice your comment was 1 year ago) or if you have returned to eating proper meals and how have you gone maintaining your weight loss?
Great advice!! Check out, "The Poker Donkey," a song about Bad Beats in No-Limit Texas Hold'em. If you like it, please subscribe to our channel and add us as a fave...
i don't ever eat these energy bars...the ones that are popular in Singapore are full of sugar, nuts, dried fruits and some grains. They are always too sweet and make you thirsty.
Stay away from most of them. They are loaded with fat. Saturated fat. Better to go with a powder that is mostly fat free. watch the powders though, some of them have sat fat too. After lifting.
thanks for putting that video up deff, those bars are a bad choice i actually gained weight once because i was eating them and they would leave me hungry so i would go and eat something that filled me up bad choice i hate those bars now!!!i stopped eating them and actually lost the weight i had gained
I disagree about the "Special K" bar. I eat a chocolate chip one for lunch with an apple everyday with a protein water. I stay full for four to five hours.
I like the slim fast optima bar. I bring one with me to the gym in the morning. I have never been a big breakfast eater and this is the right size. It has 8g of protein and 22 vitamins and minerals. I also like a brand called Glucerna.
It has too much saturated fat. That is it's downfall. There is no reason to add saturated fat to a food. If you eat beef, it's already in there and unavoidable, but why add it? There are so many fats that are great tasting and have no saturated fat.
It's $4.69 for a box of 6 which isn't bad.

sackcheck 1 year ago
@sackcheck
I do not trust a protein bar made by a candy bar company. Check the ingredients & if it has high fructose corn syrup, mom & tri-dyglycerides, and other junk, run from them like the plague.
OtorresFitness 1 year ago
Those things taste like crap anyway.
noodle0912 1 year ago 3
The powerbar performance isn't a meal replacement bar... And it doesn't fill u up because it's used for marathoners and bikers while racing for quick energy. Full feeling = blah while running, and we all know what fiber does to you while running?!?!? Lol...
seansactivelifestyle 2 years ago 3
I wouldn't consider any of these as a meal replacement bar anyway...Personally, I LOVE having a powerbar performance energy bar right before my workout (provide that energy boost I need for P90X), and I've tried the balance and kashi bars (they suck) as a snack.

cwm2utam 2 years ago 124
@cwm2utam Meal Replacements are never a good idea. If you are on the run, at least try to grab a healthy smoothie/yogurt or wrap. Even healthy trailmix on the run is better than replacing your meal with preservatives.
aliskey62389 1 year ago
i eat them because of the protein, not to replace my meals !!!
buopesado 2 years ago 4
Eat a can of tuna instead. It is cheaper and you get a complete protein intake. Only chug it down with a bottle of water so you won't suffer with the taste.

I have a meal replacement bar that has 410 calories but a whopping 32g of protein. It also has plenty of vitamins.
Liist 2 years ago
I'm eating one Labrada leanbody gold bar every day. One has 30g of protein and 30g of carbohydrades (7g of sugar) and 300 calories. They might not be as healthy as organges or apples, but its better to eat that, than being hungry.
derbigpr500 2 years ago
wtf man ill mow down some oranges and apples.
way before some lab biosynthesisised protein bars.
mmmmm Genetically modified corn starch.
just like mom used to Bio-engineer.
:P
ganymedeIV4 2 years ago 2
But you wont get nearly enough protein if you eat only organes and apples.
Oh , and genetically modified food is better than natural food. It MODIFIED, all faults were removed, so it grows perfectly, as it would grow in nature under perfect conditions, but those perfect conditions are not possible in nature.
derbigpr500 2 years ago
well who the hell would only eat oranges and apples in the first place?
Variety w1ns foo1

I only get a few protein bars once in a while. That said, I can rest easy saying I've never had any of these ones.

Genius83 2 years ago
omg this is a retarded experiment. No shit you're hungry if you eat only 200kcal ? :D
normal meal ~700 Calories
mNikke 2 years ago 4
Agreed. If you diet, you eat less, hence you'll feel hungry. "Simplezz". Its about will power and exercise!
Genius83 2 years ago
So what's the best meal replacement bar?
I just want something that's healthy to eat 3000 calories a day of everyday. I don't want to mess with 17 different kinds of food to get a balanced healthy diet. Why is this so hard to find?

Blades2002 2 years ago
the host is just a "pretty face" she has no idea what shes talking about. These bars aren't healthy, i agree, but saturated fat isn't unhealthy and the whole point of these bars is fit a lot of calories in them so that they can replace a meal! so of course they are going to have lots of calories.

theres alot of sugar in these bars which can trun into fat so they are only good if you cant have a meal
forihavefallen 2 years ago
This woman is an idiot who clearly doesn't really know what she's talking about
I've tried the top two "worst bars", and they've actually worked great for me (I weigh 130 pounds)-I will admit that the Special K bar works best in conjuction with something else (I eat them with a cube of Edam cheese), but those slim fast bars are really filling by themselves
Slim Fast shakes have an equal amount of calories as the bars and are more filling, though

How about the sugar content? The ingredients? All you spoke about was calorie content.
Shit video.
biglogstrongman 2 years ago 5
Pretty bad video..
1. two of the bars aren't even meal replacement bars.
You'll send your body into starvation mode if you only eat one of these.
fatphil101 2 years ago 4
And I know someone will look at my username and comment on this, but I'm not actually fat and my name is not Phil.
fatphil101 2 years ago 3
Most protein/energy bars are shit. Try Jay Robb's bars. Tasty and natural.
CoastToCoastPM 2 years ago
I like pure protein bars and muscle milk lite bars. Although I recently switched to muscle milk even though they are less protein because a lot of the pure proteins contain zero fiber (but do have fewer than 200 cals). I don't use them as MRs though...I eat them directly before or after I lift weights for the protein. They serve as a good snack since otherwise I'm STARVING after an intense workout. Usually they keep me going for at least two hours when it's time for a real meal. =)
shantalrenee 2 years ago
powerbar isn't a MRP you sily people. It's a sport energy bar and i think that it works pretty well for that.
rustynail12345678 2 years ago 6
These are more like candy replacement bars. If I had a choice between a Snickers bar and a Slim Fast bar, I'd chose the former (tastes better).

Pure whey protein or pure soy protein (ON whey is close)+Stevia Clear+ soy milk+generic egg beaters+almond butter+3 apricot kernels, cranberries,= great
heywoodjablohme 3 years ago
NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! LOL! I've been trying to implement the Slim Fast bar in my diet and this really SUCKS! Thanks for the information!
KarmaEros 3 years ago
I am going to take her advice b/c I have tried all of those bars that she named and it does not fill you up a bit if anything it gets you even more hungry. Never again will I purchase. All of that is about the same as a few chips or a cookie.
FierceGirl22 3 years ago
Shut up. We're lucky she's even trying to help us.
coolxhaha 3 years ago
Um she didn't even say how much protein was in ANY of the bars. This video is near useless.
I would take most of what she says with a pinch of salt people.
BananaHammockFest 3 years ago
Take the Balance Gold for example. 210 calories is absolutely fine and 4g of fat isnt a lot either. How is that meant to be one the worst in any way? In fact all the bars aren't that bad. It would be good for taking before the gym or exercise if you can't have a meal.
And She talks B.S.saying things like "experts say" and "this maybe" or "probably won't fill you up" isn't she meant to be educating us, rather than just saying these bars are "the worst."

i 100% agree... protein bars are junk and taste like shit... ur way better off eating a fruit or vegetable cuz they fill u up fast with fewer calories, and they taste a hell of a lot better.
whitekid3 3 years ago 3
protein bars are ment for body builders they lose the fat they gain and gain muscle from the protien.
ZaoHuZhua 3 years ago 3

As a runner and type 1 diabetic, this is very crucial information.
weasleyfan94 3 years ago
as long as you are exercising, it's okay to eat this stuff. just keep exercising!
ughh11 3 years ago
True..you should only consume protein bars or meal replacement bars only if you are exercising. I used to eat one bar per day which had 3g of fat but I was hitting the gym 2 hours per day, 5 days a week. If you are eating these type of bars and not exercising you will probably gain weight instead of losing it..

SLIM FAST OWNS!

my theory on the meal replacement diet things is that is just doesnt seem like its something that you could do forever, and that when you returned to regular eating plans/habits you would put some of the weigh back on.
so i just want to ask if infact you are still using the slimfast plan and are happy doing it (as i notice your comment was 1 year ago) or if you have returned to eating proper meals and how have you gone maintaining your weight loss?

whats the use of protein bars? its to get muscles or more energy for exercises? and when do u eat them? before, during or after exercises?
denasdoc 4 years ago
Stay away from most of them. They are loaded with fat. Saturated fat. Better to go with a powder that is mostly fat free. watch the powders though, some of them have sat fat too. After lifting.

thanks for putting that video up deff, those bars are a bad choice i actually gained weight once because i was eating them and they would leave me hungry so i would go and eat something that filled me up bad choice i hate those bars now!!!i stopped eating them and actually lost the weight i had gained

I disagree about the "Special K" bar. I eat a chocolate chip one for lunch with an apple everyday with a protein water. I stay full for four to five hours.
lizzelikespie 4 years ago 2
I like the slim fast optima bar. I bring one with me to the gym in the morning. I have never been a big breakfast eater and this is the right size. It has 8g of protein and 22 vitamins and minerals. I also like a brand called Glucerna.
vmlangdon 4 years ago
It has too much saturated fat. That is it's downfall. There is no reason to add saturated fat to a food. If you eat beef, it's already in there and unavoidable, but why add it? There are so many fats that are great tasting and have no saturated fat.
