  • where do you get your hackle?

  • Hi mckiller45,

Most of the capes I use you can buy on the net, like on ebay. The types of capes I like to use for all the flies that I tye are Indain and Chinese in hen and cock, these capes are just from normal chickens. Then there's genetics which I mostly buy as cock saddles from Whiting, Metz and Collins..

I hope this is of some help to you...

    All the best Davie

  • @DavieMcPhail Thanks for the reply, im a begginer fly tyer with a low budget and ive noticed that indian saddles and necks are cheap compared to the genetics. Can these less expensive options still be used to tie the hackle on flies like the adams dry fly? thanks

  • Hi mckiller45,

Yes they can be used to tye these flies because at one time this was all that was available and they caught just as well, I still prefer them to the genetic on some of the patterns I have tyed for many years...

    All the best Davie

  • Thanks for the video Davie, just learning to tie compra duns

  • Hi Davie, Nice fly, good balance do you have to add float aids to keep it floating or does it stay up on its own. Regards Alan

  • Hi Alan,

I would use a floatant to help keep it up and the one I like most is Mucilin...

    All the best Davie

  • love your flys great job man!!!

  • Dave thanks for the inspiration to get back into tying.

  • Dave thanks for the inspiration to get back into tying

  • Davie~

Thanks for the pattern, I was going to send you a message asking what you like to use towards the end of the season. You answered with this video. I'm heading fishing this weekend. I've tied a few of these to try, the fishing by me has been really slow, with all the rain we've had this year there just isn't much coming off the water at all. Thanks again for the great video.

  • Davie, a wonderful tie!

When i want to splay the tails on my mayfly patterns i will leave the tag end of thread on until i reach the rear of the hook on small flies and then draw it back up between the tails to spread them. On larger flies (14+), i will tie a loop of thread off the back of the hook in order to do the same thing, it works wonderfully and speeds up the tying process greatly

  • Hi Davie

That is a great idea adding the hackle to it. Gives it a little more movement.

    Thanks for the Great Vids

  • Davie-What do you think about tying a Sulphur in the same way?

    William

  • Hi flyspoke,

I would tye many species of mayfly in this style and the Sulphur would be one...

    All the best Davie
