They have a fleet of them for security reasons, decoys from things like rocket propelled grenades even though the helicopters have special defense weapons built in. TV is not allowed to film the fleet landing in Washington so people can't study it. They just film it on and above the lawn.

The fleet is actually really old and needs to be replaced but Obama refused because of the cost... so I wouldn't go critiquing the cost in protecting a very vulnerable individual.

True but also remember that the maintenance on Marine One is similar to the maintenance on Air Force One. The vast majority of the airframe of AF1 is probably not the same as it was 20 years ago. The same probably goes for Marine One.

Whether they upgrade the fleet or not is kind of a waste of time. If Obama decides to upgrade, the repubs will bitch for about a week and move on. If a repubs did it, the dems would probably do the exact same thing. Not disagreeing with you, that's just my $0.50

i got to go to washington d.c for a school trip and we went to the white house. The secret service came in and said that we have been cordially invited to watch president obama board marine 1. So we sat there for like 5 minutes then a marine came out of the helicopter so perfectly . Then hear comes President obama. It was so cool he would have shaken our hands put he was pointing at his watch which meant no time. But the helicopter pilot had only about 20 yards to maneuver the the helicopter.

As I understand it, Marine One is only called "Marine One" if the president is on board. Otherwise, they're just helicopters. The same goes for Air Force one which could technically be any airplane that the president flies on, not just his jumbo jet. Great video!

If a presidential chpper or airplane had technical problems etc, the back ups would be called Marine One and Air Force One respectively only if the president was on board. The "one" in their names dosn't mean they're the only aircraft, it means that they are the only vehicle carrying the president at the current time.

11 identical VH-3D SeaKings (as you normally see on the South Lawn), 8 VH-60N BlackHawks (both Sikorsky). The BlackHawks are favored for overseas as they can fit three to a C-5 transport, but the bigger SeaKings sometimes go. The solid green choppers are for press, staff, security, etc. Two "WhiteTops" always used so that nobody knows which one the President is aboard...called the "Shell Game."
