I much prefer Gary Beach. Gary has the perfect mix of femininity and the masculine vocal tone that is become expected with this role. This guy just doesn't have the resounding baritone voice for this role. He tries, but its just not there.
I saw this musical in London at xmas ,the day it finished!! Was absolutely blown away ,fantastic. Im Australian, & even got to have a foto taken with Nick, the cagelle in the blue wig,who is also an Aussie, so Nick if u read this ,please get in touch!! xxx
the person they 'picked to sing' happens to be Doulgas Hodge (who, incidentally, won the Oliver award and received huge critical acclaim). I saw Douglas twice before the end of the run and it was one of the greatest performances I have ever witnessed. The 'goat' voice you're referring to is an homage/intertextual reference to Edith Piaf and other cabaret stars.
from 1:36 to 1:45 what the hell, he sounds like a goat,i seen la cage and it is a top west end show and they picked him to sing??i saw it with john barrowman he so brill!!
Great, entertaining performances. Only thing for me was the solo "I Am What I Am", to wit I would have enjoyed a pure baritone/bass voice, without the inflection. Les Cagelles, though, were sweet and the show, of course, a statment for the
80's and is still as poignant today as it was 25 yrs ago. Not that much has changed. Bravo!
Hold that breath and no winking of eyes and witness these spectacular performances with gayish temperament, style and improvisation only true artists can deliver!!!!
I saw this with graham norton yesterday and i though he was brilliant. completely unrecognizable than the performance he gave in this. his singing voice will never be brilliant, but his acting was wonderful. incredibly funny and so heartbreaking at times. i would really recommend it.
Indeed I saw it on Easter Monday. Norton was great but agree on the voice! Simply loved the maid Jacob. The Cajelles were gorgeous. However, am old enough to have seen the play in Paris and the film (in French). Would recommend it highly. The nuances in French unfortunately cannot be translated into English. Otherwise high entertainment at La Cage.
Saw this at the Playhouse with Douglas Hodge and I have to say he was absolutely outstanding. The whole show is a gem. Unfortunatley Hodge leaves the show after next week.
i seen this in london and if u liked this little clip of the rvs go and book tickets cause its amazin and anyone who disagrees just wait.....................
I don't think Graham Norton himself is expecting to be as good as Hodge. At the end of the day, he's trying something new. I don't believe he thinks he's gonna be a West End sensation like Hodge is. We love the Graham Norton we see on the TV and I respect him for trying this. You could say the same thing about Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd. Although, it was a film he was out of his comfort zone. I'm not comparing Depp and Norton though. Two completely different personalities.
better hurry up as douglas hodge finishes in january, then graham norton is taking over, dont think g.n will be very good tho, espically after having seen hodge a few times
I saw this last month free thanks to my contacts, then again... and am off to see it on Douglas Hodge last performance, dont think graham norton will be as good though, shame. go see this musical!!!! soooo good
Thank you for this Michael...whoever you may be. Actually found myself clapping infront of the screen. How sad! So proud of Dane, can't wait to see the show. Well done gorgeous boy and the cast...looks amazing!

Ditch the wigs and the choriography. It's not the dancers' fault.

@elzbieta52 but george hearn was not feminine enough to play Albin well. Hodge is marvellous!!

@elzbieta52 I love sub-texting. It makes everything become real =)

I don't understand, did Graham Norton play Albin or just a La Cage 'girl'? I'm so confused.
fountainchain126 1 year ago
@fountainchain126 He played Albin during a season, so both famous Albins had to be there singing and making us enjoy their perfornances
