  • It is both beautiful and tragic. The animition is there but there is no director. Williams misunderstood , letting the drawing become more important than acting and timing. Shots drag on forever and the boarding is completely inconsistent.

  • My favorite sequence being the Babbette/Captain sequence by Charlie Downs and Hal Ambro. Even that is marred by bad layout , horrid lighting horrible color and a xerox to cell process that does not suit the style at all. You might think I blame williams but I don't , I blame the producers who mistook his artistic genius for an ability to direct. Talent does not equal storytelling.

  • The major studios seemed to want to sweep this one under the rug, but for animators and animation fans alike, this was a real masterpeice involving many top animators of the day. Poor Richard...First "Thief and the Cobbler" now they want to wipe this from animation History as well. If it was not for YouTube, I don't think I would know about either movie...

  • they don't draw like this anymore...the fluidity of the animation is insane

  • Richard Williams just passed through San Francisco ... the talk was so short and focused on his DVD series that a look at an in-depth pencil test like this was overlooked. Thanks for the post.

  • Wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

  • Its amazing that you managed to find a pencil test that old.
