I'm 71 years old and love the 40's 50's, 60's and 70's but this song is my absolute favorite of all time. If your feet ain't keeping in time and your hands aren't clapping, you're just not 'Hip'.
I remember hearing this when my Grandpa used to play this song in the 50's:) On his old record player. I still have it..and the old record..but the song is only 3 mins long. The short version
I've heard many other versions of this--including later recordings by BG. NONE of them come together into the smooth, swinging whole like this first recording by BG's band.
THIS is my favorite recording of "Sing, Sing, Sing"! The January 16, 1938 Carnegie Hall recording is all over the place. But THIS recording is the one that really gets to me! LOVE it! Thanks!
I have always loved Big Band, and Benny Goodman was the epitomy of it! My grandparents danced to this when it was new, my late husband and I took swing classes just to try to do what our grandparents did, wow, I must say What A Ride!
If this has not been commented on before, Benny Goodman was once asked 'How do you get to Carnegie Hall?' His answer was 'You Practice'
Sing sing sing is absolutely world stopping stuff, as I think it did when first performed and it shows the absolute perfection of Benny Goodman's music. Let's face it, if anyone made a mistake they received the world famous 'Ray', a stare of disapproval far more damaging and 30 years before lasers were discovered.
The 4 people who thumbs-downed this video have absolutely no taste in good music. This is a gem. Benny Goodman changed the world of Jazz forever, not to mention he singlehandedly challenged our social comfort level with integration in 1936 when he hired Teddy Wilson and Lionel Hampton as members of his band. No other band before them had integrated, at least not publically. He was a hero and a genious. Long live Benny Goodman, the king of swing! :D
Question: How much of this is improvisation? Granted, it's a great recording either way, but if some of the solos (such as the ones in the latter half of the song) were on-the-spot compositions, it would be that much cooler.
@SteelyPhil37 With their touring schedules, 40'sbig bands sometimes played the same composition 20-30 or more times a month. With a recording like this, it's possible the principles could have ad libbed new riffs. However, the fans of the time expected the composition to sound pretty much the same, and the musicians accommodated them. Besides, it would have been very stressful to try to ad lib new material all the time.
Today is no exception. A great deal of today's music is in-your-face garbage but great music is here to stay from all ages. For some really fun stuff try looking at he 1920s. Keep in mind that we are living in the good ole days.
Don't be too hard on the teenagers of today for their taste in music. Remember, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and the rest were the rock bands of their day, and swing music was considered by some to be scandalous. Remind young people of that, too, if they call swing music old-fashioned (or whatever their term for it is now...)
@MrKuwaitwolf I've been listening to this song since I was 10 (40+ years ago) and it ALWAYS gets me the same way. May you, too, have a lifetimes enjoyment of it. Thanks to all those long gone musicians.
@thomasdragsbaek Because most teens a just simply stupid and narrow minded, just few good people know what real music is. Just remember that you know within heart and soul what good music is. Ya get me.
@rudiherold84 im offended. im a teenager and i play in two jazz bands and a concert band on the trombone and tuba. i love this kind of music. its great. i play it all day. this is the best kind of music, but still, dont judge every teen that way.
@MrYoman710 I agree with you. Teenagers as a whole shouldn't be stereotyped by how a relatively small number act or dress, or by their taste in music.
@rvdbob - try: Benny Goodman Live at Carnegie Hall 1938 (by Tpetman85) for the first 10 minutes then go to: BENNY GOODMAN JAZZ LEGEND PART 5..wmv (by the50sjazzfan) for the final 5 or so minutes - it continues from the start of the piano solo...
Reportedly, this was to have been a simple 3 to 5 minute song, but during one session Gene Krupa kept the drums going. So the band improvised around him and the song became legend.
The player is a Garrard 4HF(L) with a GE VRII cartridge from the late 1950s. Specifically designed to be the best for 78s. It produces plenty of voltage so a preamp is not necessary. The stylus is an elliptical 3 mil, though 2.5 will work. Diamond is my preferred stylus, getting tough to find NOS stylus these days.
This was indeed recorded in two parts on July 6, 1937 [this is a mid-'40s reissue, as the original releases had a "Victor" label]. The extended January 1938 Carnegie Hall version wasn't issued on disc until 1950.
To think that once there was a gilded time when clubs were not packed with young ragamuffins displaying proudly their undergarments. Clubs without flashing lights of every color in the rainbow, guaranteed to cause the epileptic to go into fits, and the colorblind to avert their now stricken eyes. Best of all, the music is not dominated only by raucous bass and repetitive drums. Paradise Lost this is.
@Amityrockstarx You have to look for paradise. It just gets hidden deeper and deeper so you have to dig a little longer. There's a few youngsters who take inspiration from this music still.

Age doesn't have anything to do with what type of music someone listens to. I've listened to Big Band music since I was 9. Just because I like Sing Sing Sing doesn't mean I can't love Doo Wop by Lauryn Hill, California Love by Tupac, Smile by Lily Allen and then add some random piece by Vladimir Horowitz with Marilyn Manson and some Chrispy dub step to finish.
Yes, I'm a teenager. Just barely; 14 is hardly a teenager.

@HoboNinja2 Well your ♥ would be blessed if you'd see the huge ammt of teenagers who not only listen but also DANCE to this at the local Swing dance club here in Lancaster, PA!
i was introduced to swing music well before my teens and my kids will be whenever i decide to have kids. people look at me so funny when i'm driving down the highway blasting sing sing sing or in the mood....my grandfather taught me to love swing he used to tap dance in the 30's until recently. i joined band because his love for good music rubbed off on me and i wanted to learn to play.
@HoboNinja2 when I was a teenager (in the 90's) I wished this was the music that was still what was playing at clubs and mainstream. Clubs these days don't touch a swing club in the 30's and 40's. I can tell, and I wasn't even there! At least I got to live through the far inferior swing revival of the 90's though!
Swing dancing is real dancing. Kids today just dry hump each other on the dance floor!
What gets me is that RCA Victor had to issue a special 12 inch &* RPM disc for this song! From what i read, it was only supposed to be 4-5 minutes long, but Krupa decided to keep his drums going and the band improvised behind him. If that's the truth, then this recording is, like a co-worker likes to say, "lightning in a bottle"!

Yes, that is in fact, Christopher Columbus @ 1:48 or so - by Andy Razaf (lyrics) and Leon Berry. It was also recorded by Mr. Goodman as a single. I saw "The Benny Goodman Story" at the movie theater when I was young. and played the album "The Great Benny Goodman" until my mother's Weber phonograph gave out.
okay so im doing an IA for my history class on the entertainment industry during the Great Depression when i came to his name, so i decided to listen and guess wat? IM LIKING WHAT IM HEARING!!! :D
awesome song, i definitely relish how videos containing songs of this style do not attract as many childish 'thumb me up' comments or immature comments giving ludicrous reasons to why people gave the video a down rating.
I actually have 3 of these, 2 from local garage sales and 1 from a huge collection of 78s I bought. This was issued as a seperate record and also as a part of a 3 record album set. All 3 that I have are in excellent condition. Paid about 50c - $1 for each.
As much as I'd like to have your $100, I must say that I just bought another collection of about 2000 records, including one more of these, this one from the album. Got 4 now. Paid $100 for the collection so the new one cost 5c. Now I have 4, all pretty equal to this one in the video. They're out there, I'm not too keen on selling mine right now.

who can deny this is not Benny Goodman Orchestra's best ever recording! Gene Krupa on drums with that 'Jungle' beat and Harry James on trumpet and off course Benny 'THE King of Swing' on clarinet!!!!!!!!! I have many Benny Goodman recordings including his Mozart concerto but this is my favourite of them all. I hope you all like minded.
I am 19 and I played this song in my high school Jazz ensemble for 4 years =) Best song on the planet (one of the most difficult to learn to play though lol)
I'm 15 heard this song played at the jazz festival by another school stage band and my friend Daniel and I were obbessed for the whole weekend to find this song...purely for the reason of how awesome it is.
It is very encouraging to read notes of appreciation from so many young people. If you're not familiar with the other giants of jazz & swing, then check out Artie Shaw, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Harry James, Paul Whiteman, Art Tatum, Thomas "Fats" Waller - and Larry Clinton & His Orchestra (largely unknown today, he was a composer, arranger & instrumentalist - trumpet, trombone & coronet, his arrangements are sheer perfection, his vocalists a joy, and he was a true gentleman and real nice guy.
I'm 21 and I remember when this song was used in a Chips Ahoy commercial back in the 90's... anyone else?

@HoboNinja2 Sure! yah right.. If it dont have the same stupid beat, and if its about killing, sex and drugs, sure the kids would love it.

All 78s sound awesome if in reasonably good condition and if played with the right needle and cartridge.

Wow...
I gotta agree with Splatter Spree...
This record sounds AMAZING for a 78 RPM.
Krupa's drum kit really comes thru on this record.

awesome song, i definitely relish how videos containing songs of this style do not attract as many childish 'thumb me up' comments or immature comments giving ludicrous reasons to why people gave the video a down rating.

@SplatterSpreeReviews
I actually have 3 of these, 2 from local garage sales and 1 from a huge collection of 78s I bought. This was issued as a seperate record and also as a part of a 3 record album set. All 3 that I have are in excellent condition. Paid about 50c - $1 for each.

@cdbpdx That so cheap! Highway robbery like. I bought one for $1.50 and I thought that was a huge ass bargain. Aren't these records rare?

@stevenhamlin1000
