Just read of Mike Starr's passing yesterday, just plain f*cking sad. Watching this spot on performance of SOS from over 20 years ago just puts it all in perspective. That was a lifetime ago. For me, it will probably never be that good again. I was lucky enough to get to see AIC a couple of times back then when I was just a 14 year old kid. I took it for granted. Now, with time, it's a precious memory. RIP Mike and Layne. And to you reading this, listen, and most importantly, enjoy.
my mom used to hang with layne and i guess mike had a crush on her ahaha she said even then it was embaressing and then she saw him on celeb rehab, she bout pissed herself
You know, I loved them all....AIC, P'Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, etc. and even bands in other genres and locales like Tool, Pantera, Prong, Fear Factory, Faith No More, Type O Negative, Danzig, Soul Asylum, Ministry, Everclear, Chili Peppers, NIN, etc.
I loved them all, and I miss them all.
The early 90s were such an incredible period for hard rock. I cry for those days.
Layne, Dimebag, Kurt, Pete Steele RIP---thanks for the great music. We'll never forget you.
...to do, which is good. I have been singinfg for years and still can't get my voice perfect to Layne's, and nobody ever will --THAT'S A FACT!!!-- Though I have gotton good and pretty close. And hopefully my band which we just formed will get recognized and BIG because i promise you we can bring these types of RARE BANDS back ROCKIN!!! and fucking get rid of all of this crap ass music happening today...it all sucks my fucking left nut. LIVE ON AIC and unbelievable music you have brought us
all you guys, AIC is the greatest band to ever fucking walk the face of the earth, Layne Staley is one of a kind, way better than any other "grunge" scence frontman, or any frontman of the history of music. PJ, Nirvana, SG, STP, none of em come EVEN FUCKING CLOSE TO AIC.....and we will never see such a talented group EVER again for the history of man. I still see AiC with William, and if I close my eyes it's good, but Layne just can't be matched....and I know that's not what DuVall istrying.
I NEVER concidered Alice In Chains grunge.Just because they came out of Sea.the same time as Nirvana does'nt mean they're grunge. They were/are a hard rock band.(And a GREAT one at that)
One of the best, if not the best grunge bands of this era in the main stream. It's nice to be able to see the beginning stages of what this band came to be!
its a tragedy that he had leave us...He was Amazing and he can never be replaced but im glad they got back together with a new singer...Hes no Layne but atleast kids today can still experience some great music instead of all the trash thats out there now...So keep Rockin...Jerry still kicks ass
@WhyGo79 Exactly. Such horrible music now. Radio sucks and is boring. What passes for talent these days is just dismal. If you can steal someone's music, rap over it or be completely auto-tuned, you're in business. I blame shows like "American Idol," MTV and Top 40 Radio. Ellen DeGeneres has talent and knows how to judge music? Are you kidding me!
Yes!! that was beautiful in every way, what a voice! what a band!
i do wish they would have changed their name-it hurts my soul, i guess because layne's words got me through alot in my life & still do. of course, jerry wrote the music & layne wrote the words & sometimes the whole band wrote the songs together but either way how can they still be AIC?
jb, also you have to remember that jerry cantrell wrote most of the music for aic, not layne! layne may have been the better singer of the 2 easily, but jerry wrote the better songs! i think layne wrote the better lyrics, but thats only because i relate more to him than jerry! but you have to give jrry cantrell credit for aic's work as well as layne! laynes voice and jerrys songwriting and guitar playing is what really made aic great, not just layne! either way RIP layne, your still the man
@Oxrj: Absolutely. By comparing Layne to Kurt, I was in NO way diminishing Jerry's contribution. HUGE fan, have all his solo work etc.
I have mixed feelings about the band still being called AIC, but glad to see the surviving 3 members are sticking together. They still have a lot more great music to put out.
Layne was easily head and shoulders above Kurt. AIC's songs were much more well written, and structured than Nirvana. Not to mention just plain more talented.
You can give "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as the spark that began the grunge era to Nirvana, but overall the album Nevermind didn't stand up to Pearl Jam's 10 by any stretch of the imagination.
You can fantasize all day about where Kurt would have been if he hadn't died, personally I think they would have faded away long ago.
to jb4375 thats your opinion, not a fact! i love layne and kurt both and do believe that layne was a more talented singer (obviously) but i like the imperfections of kurts voice a lot and the graininess of it and i like the punk sound of nirvana as i love punk rock! either way i love both nirvana and alice in chains, but i disagree completely about pearl jam, always thought they were a boring band for the most part! dont act like your opinion is fact though because thats just ignorance!
and your damn crazy to think nirvana would have faded away fast! they were the most popular rock band in the world from 91-94 (and even arguably til around 96-97) so your just showing your disdain for their fame! and pearl jam sucks dude, they are not even close to aic or nirvanas level! at least thats my opinion! either way, the rock world would be lightyears better if kurt and layne could have stayed around longer!
@JB4375 No way would Kurt just faded away. He might not have been as prolific or taken longer breaks, but I believe he would've continued to write very hooky, radio-friendly tunes with some edge. He also would've most likely immersed himself more in graphic arts, painting, sculpture and collaborating with other artists.
@MirLjudima your right there is no comparison alice in chains are amazing and timeless ...nirvana was a fad at best...the most overrated band of all time! it makes me sick how they make them out to be so great
@MirLjudima Play with lables if you want but to me Rancid = Punk, and Judas Priest = Metal. These band came out of the same area, during the same time aka The Seattle Sound and later Grunge. it's not only fair to compare and contrast them, but warranted.
Had I said something stupid like: "AIC kicks the crap out of the Beach Boys!!' THEN you would have had a point. Different time, style, genre etc. See the difference?
PS IMHO AIC really does kick the crap out of the Beach Boys. LOL.
@10cst3r Nice argument. Truth hurts doesn't it? Nevermind was Nirvana's best album, and they showed signs of wear as each successive album had less to offer, and the same dull whining theme. And some want to compare him to John Lennon?? LMAO. Kurt doesn't even hold a candle to Dave Grohl whose already demonstrated my talent since Nirvana ended. Better voice, better song structure, lyrics, he even plays multiple intruments. Go play your nirvana cd's and have a good cry.
@JB4375 well i agree AIC is by fat the most talented and band deserving to be called the greatest of the grunge bands.. the diversity of there songs and lyrics and guitar riff and great vocals from jer and layne..... Nirvana is over all a simple band but i do admit they have a lot of cathchy riffs and melodies, even though lyrically they arnt great...still good music to listen to
It's always the least talented/most known people who get all the coverage. For example, if one of The Jonas Brothers and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd died on the exact same day, who do you think would get more press coverage?
certain people don't get the respect they deserve, dimebag darrell didn't get crap either, but if slash died right now, people wouldn't let it go, just like they won't let go of michael jackson
Guess sometimes its better to burn out than fade away... Kurt went out with a BANG at #1, Lane killed himself a little each day secluding himself so bad that not even Family knew him anymore. Sad in both cases, but yes, I think AIC was the better as well...

the 94/95 scene: Jar Of Flies, In utero, Vitalogy, Purple, Superunknown
then anything after that was a rarity. it only lasted so long
