me and my friend went out a mounth ago and planted seeds with water and left them alone , when we we came back the 7 or 8 seeds were up to our hip ( im not a midget )
I collected and planted some beech nuts last autumn and now have 2 seedlings. Not sure where to plant them long term, but hey - no harm in planting trees... however small. :)
I found the seed just opened with 2cm of root while cleaning the garden, collected it and grew it. Still have the tree! this year it had about 10 leaves.
You can find which seeds are viable by putting them in a water bucket. The ones that sink are viable. And I guess putting them on a pot would start them...
@brklyn21 also they are activated by fluctuations in temperature. But if you live in the right climate this is done automatically. So you can just plant the seed in a pot outside.
just imagine, our grandchildren can be sitting on that same sprouting, on its branches, in a few decades.

I love Beech trees. Good shade and excellent fall color. I don't care too much for raking up the leaves, but it's a small price to pay. :)
