I made a drinking game out of the "uhm...". I killed my liver in the first 5 minutes =) Great vids though. Maybe cut back a little on the uhms though.
I am not that strong of a player and I seen Knight takes b2 (I wouldn't have played it without further analysis as I only had 5 seconds or so to evaluate during the video), if he was cheating it would have been played.
I, am not a chess player, by any stretch of the imagination. I do play on occassion with my friend. He and I usually end up in a stalemate, because of my limited knowledge of how to play the game. I play just trying to keep him from winning, unlike those who are playing to win. What I have always found interesting, is that there are so called "standard" moves, and that there are advantages to either black or white, yet what kind of game would this then be?
Great video, I absolutely agree with you, jrobi. What makes human's chess (played by humans instead of computers) so beatiful is the way the player is thinking and planning his strategy and in the end make the moves he believes to be in his favour. I doesn't have to be the strongest move or even the best move, but if the opponent doesn't see those moves it's simple: if you eliminate all posibilities and none of them are viable the only one left is the imposible! (computer did it!).
i think that its wrong to accuse them, but i think that Mamedyarov already had it in his head that his opponent was cheating. thus when his opponent came back from a smoke with a brilliant move. we know what he was thinking. but i think they should put restrictions on whether or not players can leave and smoke. there should be smoking areas inside the building or something. but whos to stop them from going to the bathroom and analyzing things?
i think that allowing player to leave the room doing their games just begs for accusations. however i myself would be dying for a ciggarete if my opponent took 40 mins. to make a move. so i think to avoid these situations they should limit whether or not players can leave the room to smoke. maybe they should let them smoke at the board.. just a thought.
Bad loser. Its a HUGE thing to accuse an opponent of cheating in chess and he's damaged his own reputation severely with this false accusation. I saw some of the so called "Computer stolen lines" and im just an average club-player. He should just blame himself for not playing the rook takes h5 pawn as pointed out here which is the book-line. Also the fact that the so called "cheater" left for a fag-break, smoking in plain sight of other nico-addicts clinches his INNOCENCE in my opinion.
mamedyarov lost his focus on the game when he starts suspecting that his opponent is cheating, and as a result of that he lost the match just as he lost his mental powers....
If I were Mamedyarov, I can imagine I could also be suspicious of my opponent behaved strangely during the game. But suspicion themselves are not evidence, and certainly not enough to make a formal accusation. What he should have done is to observe him in other games and try to catch him in the act.
I am only a hobby player 1200-1400, so I am not qualified to see the moves as most posters are capable of. Maybe I am missing a larger picture. Could there not be some rules in place that designate where players can take breaks and be observed without someone breathing down there neck. And a simple check of the persons posessions before a match would reveil any banned equipment. However, this seems too easy, Would someone tell me what I am overlooking? peace and thanks for the vid.
My chess computer (Chess 2003) is actually an extremely good chess computer that is underrated. It beat fritz on its hardest difficulty and using less time. When I put Chess 2003 on a 5 second thinking time, he moved knight to b2 like you said it would. I was unconvinced it would do this a second time. So I moved the Thinking time to 60 seconds. It moved QUEEN TO D6!.
I feel it would be improper to comment either way on the possible cheating, but if a chess player feels another player is cheating and ACTING unprofessional, the player shouldn't then REACT unprofessional (as well) as a child would! All Mamedyarov had to do is when Kernosov came back to the table is quietly go over to an offical and say "Please watch my opponent very closely at the board and when he leaves, I think he may be cheating... can you do this please?" and the problem would be solved!!!
@Doctorro You're right about ego... this is why I bring up to my students... "Chess is war... and in war there is also psych-warfare... if you lose your head in war... you WILL lose! IMO he (Mamedyarov) was just pist he lost and wanted to make it as uncomfortable as possible for his next chllengers at his next tourny.
IMO chess has always been a psych-war and a physical (OTB) game. That's the real reason why Mamedyarov lost... he wasn't prepared with either. I'm about a class A/expert level and I think I could have beeten him that day! Jrobi is dead-on...! he (Mame)made very questionable moves for a GM and Kurnasov resonded in true GM form. Whether the grandmaster in question cheated or not, I think something should be done to definitively stop cheating. I can't think of any immediate solutions though...
I think JRobi is right. I saw Qd6 and Qd2 and I'm only a 2000 player. I don't think they are difficult moves for a grandmaster to find at all.
White played poorly and amidst the frustration of that , saw his opponent going away from the table and then making some good moves to counter. He lost touch with reality, perhaps because of his own frustration with the game.
Anyone who plays tournament chess knows this can happen and they should be on their guard to take a deep breath when it does.
Reminds me of the accusations against Kramnik and the cables in his bathroom. He claims the bathrooms were changed every day, however this avoids the point that cables were found in his bathroom during the day he was using this bathroom. Sounds very suspicious, but there's no way to be sure either way.
In this case, it seems as though the accusations are quite baseless.
well to say that a GM would never cheat is highly naive and like saying i dont believe anyone would cheat, and thats plainly wrong. GMs are human beings, human beings cheat, the higher the stakes the more incentive tio cheat. look at athletics, they know what they are risking, their entire careers, does it stop them, even the very top athletes?? hm
1) I don't believe any established GM would cheat with a computer because the cost of getting caught is just too great. It would be like the chess equivilent of plagiarism. His career and reputation would be totally destroyed. It's not worth the risk just to steal some moves that MIGHT be a little better than the GM could have come up with on his own.
2) I think Mamedyarov was pissed off that his cute little opening (3. f3 etc.) flopped.
I would like to point out that the queen advancement was the first move I noticed. I would have to agree that his moves were very dangerous, but ultimatly I believe it should be noted that part of chess is taking the risks for the chance of success. Most important to realize is the fact that the moves he made were not unsupported logically and that simple confrontation in a professional manner would have dismissed any of the issues.
Whenever I accuse someone (if I should at all accuse, and I don't like doing this at all) I would make absolutely sure without a shadow of a doubt. and even then before going to the arbiters I would give the opposition a chance to answer the charges brought forward.
Just like Othello says "Be sure, villian, be sure before calling my wife a whore".
@HeadDominion thats great??? its othello he was a nigger,.. i would call every fucking bitch that sleep with a nigga a whore... he was sure enough she was because he was a nigga,

Great Video as always JRobi! I love your site as well!
@jrobichess just because he didnt take the best moves doesnt mean he didnt cheat, he still could have done it on purpose.. i think he didnt say it for a reason....
I think they should have it out in a pistol duel. Lol.
As for the position. Following the exchange sequence after Qd2, I fail to see how the resulting position is favorable to Black. He's behind a full piece.
We'll probably never know, but... I hope Kurnosov noticed that Mamedyarov was getting annoyed (maybe because of the draw offer) and started leaving the board between moves just to mess with him. Mind games for the win.
The issue of cheating in matches aside, I'm starting to feel like engine analysis in the preparatory phase is to chess what steroids are to bicycle racing. Everyone does it in chess, so there's no fairness issue, but I wonder if we're losing some of the integrity of the game as human brilliancy is replaced by mechanical number crunching. Just some food for thought.
i see what you mean. and , i agree. and human, "brilliancy" isnt always neccesairly the best move. its a move that enduces your opponent to blunder.i had a big chess tourney last week, and it had a couple of 2000s. i was playing a 1100. i played a move that enduced him to blunder. because if i had been playing the 2000, theres no WAY i would have played that move. anyways, i agree on your former comment. peace! =)
i not really good at chess and i didnt understand you threw most of the video but i cant wait untill i get good and understand your videos a little more
It isn't just a board game. It is their profession. And Mamedyarov is saying lies about Kurnosov. He could lose a law suit for slander to that kind of thing.
I don't know why you're making the point that computers aren't perfect chess players. Nobody claimed that they were. Mamedyarov just said that Kurnosov's moves were the same moves that the computer liked, which is evidence that he was computer cheating.
@jrobichess yeah but the contact of his jacket, but he could have had a friend analyse it with computer, or get gm friends to help him, i mean why would he say something like that for no reason?? i think the possibility is there that he is cheating
@PhilomathBret How could Mamedyarov say that the movements of the oponent were the same of an chess engine, if Mamedyarov was playing at the same time? Or were the Mamedyarov´s members of team that said that to him?
i think if black would still try after white queen goes to D6 between 17:10 and 17:20 (if that would've happened) black probably could have won in the end.
While ...Qd6 is pretty spectacular (given that white has just attacked the knight on c4), it is not too difficult to find for a Grandmaster: Black's main problem is that some of his pieces are still undeveloped, and a GM would instinctively look for a tactical solution to get his remaining pieces into play.
The fact that Kurnosov always put his jacket on when leaving the board would have made me a bit suswpicious as well... but there is an explanation for that (the cigarettes.)
How $much$ did Kurnosov pay you to do this PR for him?
More than anything this proves the existence of the corrupt cabal of chess bosses conspiring against pro-Mamedyarov elements.
For Mamedyarov and the future of chess we will not forget this and we will fight against it!
This is not finished with. This is only the beginning. We are watching Kurnosov along with all of his establishment flunkies, protectors, and apologists.
This ranks as one of the most creative comments I have read to date. =)
Anyway, as for the questions: No $ and I don't consider this PR for Kurnosov. The game itself, and the lack of evidence, creates a strong foundation for an argument in his favor. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Having just got back into chess after a very long time, I watched some Fischer interviews and he made some comments about cheating himself. I reckon if anything can be learnt from this is that the players should they need to go for a break or a smoke should do so in designated rooms which are also arbitrated by the organizers.
Hey jrobi. I love your video's and I was wondering if you could do one about the Budapest Gambit. I play it often as back and it can sometimes be crushing, but usually the position is neutralized quickly. Id love to see your analysis of it.
well ok I mostly agree that mamedyarov probably went too far, but still specualtion isnt totally worthless when its a player like mamedyarov, who is very strong and experienced and can tell the difference between sorts of moves that are suspicious. Not totally worthless but not worth nearly enough imo to make such a bold accusation. Still i wouldnt blame either player nearly as much as the tournament organizers who make cheating possible in the first place by underestimating its possibility.
I must say, as simple and logical kurnosov might appear in hindsight...the position is not simple at all and while i do think he may have found his moves on his own, it would've made me suspicious as well. Its just frusterating to have no very good way to know. If theres a lot of money in these tournaments, I dont see why its insane to support some rule that getting up from the table is not allowed to prevent this sort of frusteration.
it's not frustrating. the cheating allegation is speculation, which is worthless. this is admitted in fact, if not in words, by the failure of the accuser to support his alleged belief.
Sounds like a douchebag wanted an excuse for his failure.
Well there are certain positions that humans and computers will agree, and other positions where they will not. Mamedyarov tends to play very bizarre moves with very complex tactics that makes it very difficult for either side to find clear moves. The annoying part is that cheating is rather possible, and I feel that its the tournament organizers responsibility to prevent it more actively which they fail to do, leaving players sortof to their own imagiion.
I'm guessing Mamedyarov was suspicious that Kurnosov may have had a chess computer ready when he "went out for a smoke." This is a very speculative accusation though.
its crazy jrobichess your the best thing i could have ever subscribed to. I love how you explain and break down stuff. I was playing some ICC and i beat a guest and he asked me how I moved like that i told him trangulation thank jrobichess lol. I was waiting for the day that like someone gets caught cheating but this is clearly Mamedyarov just beign outplayed. He took 40 minutes to make one move that put him in a losing position chess is a game were each move decides how strong your game is.
Kasparov once said: "Chess is the most violent sport in the world". Looking back at some things that Fischer did and said and listening to this event, I realise that Kasparov was right... Chess can build such pressure on ones head that sometimes players do and say stupid things and even become neurotic.
Don't think they use blockers but I seem to remember a GM (I think Nigel Short but don't quote me on that) was disqualified in a game because his cell phone rang, before a move even.
J robi, after watching this video, I forgot all the lines before the queen pin on the bishop. (searched on a database)
Nice story telling, I loved it
It looks to me like Mamedyarov did okay with this opening, but it looks like white's 10. h4, h5 pawn push was a sink or swim and as you said Bh6 was really bad, those three moves completely destroyed him, also, the fghBKR are all standing there like statues when he knows he is going to sacrifice.
Great comment thanatos167! White definitely made some key mistakes in the position. Coupled with black's very natural resplies I am hoping that Kurnosov will get some kind of apology. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Just a guess but maybe White had prepared a surprise weapon for his opponent Sometimes surprises just don't work If Black was well prepared then there is a good chance that it wouldn't have been as difficult of a position for Black as White had hoped. Sitting OTB for 40 minutes seeing that your position is bad . Black was in control Then declining the draw offer His psyche was broken Whites plan failed due to Blacks cold blooded play "He cheated" was the only answer White wouldve accepted
I think he was definitely trying to put his opponent out of his comfort zone, which is fine, but solid play throughout needs to back that plan up. Lots of missed opportunities from white. The opening was solid for the most part until the pawn was pushed instead of taking with the rook. Thanks for checking out the vid!
I find it unbelievable that such great chess commentator and analyst as jrobi who has developed his obvious passion for chess over the past year should still have a blitz rating of 1121. Even I could beat you and you open my eyes every time I watch your videos. Do you not cope with pressure very well?
My blitz is horrible because I always try things out with it. My standard has been innactive for awhile but I am preparing to do some real over the board tournaments this summer for an official national rating. I will be blogging about that whole experience when it begins. Thanks for checking out the vid!
i think white made some bad moves and black won fair and square. i dont know how high i rank but some moves that black made i would have made my self like queen D6... that looks like logic to me and then what was white thinking with pawn D5 ?!
I made a drinking game out of the "uhm...". I killed my liver in the first 5 minutes =) Great vids though. Maybe cut back a little on the uhms though.

Just some food for thought.
ottovanbismark 2 years ago 24
i see what you mean. and , i agree. and human, "brilliancy" isnt always neccesairly the best move. its a move that enduces your opponent to blunder.i had a big chess tourney last week, and it had a couple of 2000s. i was playing a 1100. i played a move that enduced him to blunder. because if i had been playing the 2000, theres no WAY i would have played that move. anyways, i agree on your former comment. peace! =)
cardeater473 2 years ago
@ottovanbismark Yes. And this is one of the main reasons that arimaa is a better game!
PhilomathBret 1 year ago
@ottovanbismark If the mathematical number crunching refutes the brilliancy, then it isn't very brilliant, is it? :)

PhilomathBret 2 years ago
Lots of people do consider them to be perfect. Of course they are not, but they are now better than any human opponent.
jrobichess 2 years ago
@jrobichess yeah but the contact of his jacket, but he could have had a friend analyse it with computer, or get gm friends to help him, i mean why would he say something like that for no reason?? i think the possibility is there that he is cheating
dragonheadofthewest 11 months ago
@PhilomathBret How could Mamedyarov say that the movements of the oponent were the same of an chess engine, if Mamedyarov was playing at the same time? Or were the Mamedyarov´s members of team that said that to him?
codonauta 1 year ago
@codonauta His opponent was going to the bathroom a lot so he's saying he was computer cheating in there.
PhilomathBret 1 year ago
@PhilomathBret I see. As the Toiletgate case in 2006 in the match Topalov x Kramnik.
codonauta 1 year ago
@codonauta Oh he made that accusation after the game, not during.

i think if black would still try after white queen goes to D6 between 17:10 and 17:20 (if that would've happened) black probably could have won in the end.

No. The bishop can goto f5 now because of the qxh6 threat. Before qd6, the bishop's only reasonable move was bd7, which is simply a bad move.

jrobichess 2 years ago
Seems to me that he just got frustrated and decided to accuse him of cheating instead of taking the loss like a real GM would.
Mtallica101 2 years ago

Blood feud!
daveyork0 2 years ago
This ranks as one of the most creative comments I have read to date. =)
Anyway, as for the questions: No $ and I don't consider this PR for Kurnosov. The game itself, and the lack of evidence, creates a strong foundation for an argument in his favor. Thanks for checking out the vid!
jrobichess 2 years ago
Having just got back into chess after a very long time, I watched some Fischer interviews and he made some comments about cheating himself. I reckon if anything can be learnt from this is that the players should they need to go for a break or a smoke should do so in designated rooms which are also arbitrated by the organizers.
badmofker 2 years ago
just need to clarify , Fischer was talking about players cheating. i wasnt suggesting he cheated
badmofker 2 years ago
That would be a fair rule for people leaving the play area. Thanks for checking out the vid!

well ok I mostly agree that mamedyarov probably went too far, but still specualtion isnt totally worthless when its a player like mamedyarov, who is very strong and experienced and can tell the difference between sorts of moves that are suspicious. Not totally worthless but not worth nearly enough imo to make such a bold accusation. Still i wouldnt blame either player nearly as much as the tournament organizers who make cheating possible in the first place by underestimating its possibility.
idlenessss 2 years ago
How come in the line you recomended at about 14:00, when black knight takes white pawn on b2, the king dosnt just take the knight right back?
Frostbite675 2 years ago
He explained it at 14:25. If Kxb2 then c5 Rxe4 Qb3+ Kc2 Qxh6 -+
apsuhos4u 2 years ago

qpwnsall 2 years ago 4
I must say, as simple and logical kurnosov might appear in hindsight...the position is not simple at all and while i do think he may have found his moves on his own, it would've made me suspicious as well. Its just frusterating to have no very good way to know. If theres a lot of money in these tournaments, I dont see why its insane to support some rule that getting up from the table is not allowed to prevent this sort of frusteration.
idlenessss 2 years ago
it's not frustrating. the cheating allegation is speculation, which is worthless. this is admitted in fact, if not in words, by the failure of the accuser to support his alleged belief.
Sounds like a douchebag wanted an excuse for his failure.
TheSpiderMind 2 years ago 3
Well there are certain positions that humans and computers will agree, and other positions where they will not. Mamedyarov tends to play very bizarre moves with very complex tactics that makes it very difficult for either side to find clear moves. The annoying part is that cheating is rather possible, and I feel that its the tournament organizers responsibility to prevent it more actively which they fail to do, leaving players sortof to their own imagiion.
idlenessss 2 years ago
How could someone cheat in chess? move the opponents pieces while they aren't looking?
ConsecrationAura 2 years ago
I'm guessing Mamedyarov was suspicious that Kurnosov may have had a chess computer ready when he "went out for a smoke." This is a very speculative accusation though.
DMK000 2 years ago 2
its crazy jrobichess your the best thing i could have ever subscribed to. I love how you explain and break down stuff. I was playing some ICC and i beat a guest and he asked me how I moved like that i told him trangulation thank jrobichess lol. I was waiting for the day that like someone gets caught cheating but this is clearly Mamedyarov just beign outplayed. He took 40 minutes to make one move that put him in a losing position chess is a game were each move decides how strong your game is.
l3lue2ain 2 years ago
Kasparov once said: "Chess is the most violent sport in the world". Looking back at some things that Fischer did and said and listening to this event, I realise that Kasparov was right... Chess can build such pressure on ones head that sometimes players do and say stupid things and even become neurotic.

I wonder if they would use a 'signal blocker' inside the tournament venue? Or whether participants need access to their phones?

White doesn't look like a godly GM this game.
thanatos167 2 years ago
Great comment thanatos167! White definitely made some key mistakes in the position. Coupled with black's very natural resplies I am hoping that Kurnosov will get some kind of apology. Thanks for checking out the vid!
jrobichess 2 years ago
jrobi, I've realized that you love to describe moves as "crashing." :)
JTsmiley14 2 years ago
I do - I have to admit. =)
jrobichess 2 years ago
Just a guess but maybe White had prepared a surprise weapon for his opponent Sometimes surprises just don't work If Black was well prepared then there is a good chance that it wouldn't have been as difficult of a position for Black as White had hoped. Sitting OTB for 40 minutes seeing that your position is bad . Black was in control Then declining the draw offer His psyche was broken Whites plan failed due to Blacks cold blooded play "He cheated" was the only answer White wouldve accepted
RyanDaVanon 2 years ago
I think he was definitely trying to put his opponent out of his comfort zone, which is fine, but solid play throughout needs to back that plan up. Lots of missed opportunities from white. The opening was solid for the most part until the pawn was pushed instead of taking with the rook. Thanks for checking out the vid!
jrobichess 2 years ago
I find it unbelievable that such great chess commentator and analyst as jrobi who has developed his obvious passion for chess over the past year should still have a blitz rating of 1121. Even I could beat you and you open my eyes every time I watch your videos. Do you not cope with pressure very well?
BenNCM 2 years ago
