I remember owning this on a VHS with a porky pig cartoon and Daffy the Commando when I was about 5 - didn't understand what the cartoon was all about just saw it as some weird guy with an S on his chest flying towards a big arse plane
Just think if we detained Muslims in the current war like we detained the Japanese-Americans in WW2, the masscre attempt at Fort Dix, the Massacre by some muslim army counselor, and other plots we found would not have happened. Even if there were bleeding hearts back then, it was still a federal crime to protest such detentions or protest anything related to the war at all.
For anyone who gets offended by this; try to keep in mind that at the time we where in a war with the Japanese, and (unlike the current war) we where trying to WIN IT! Cartoon's about what a nice bunch of guys the Japanese where, and how Pearl Harbor was really all our fault would not have been much use...
I wonder if the Superman returns movie drew inspiration from this movie since Superman had to slow down a plane that was going down in that movie as well.
Ah yes, the now PC black sheep of the Fleischer cartoons. If you think this is bad you should have seen the comics themselves. Batman actually grabs a gun and shoots enemy soldiers, Superman's "Slap a Jap with war bonds" and to a lesser extent Captain America.
it was 1940s war propaganda....at that time, there was nobody in america except japanese americans who would give a shit, no bleeding hearts back then. i'm not condoning the use of the word, i'm just stating the signs of the times.
The actions of Japanese imperialists against the nation in alliance with Nazi Germany is the most rascist against all races faiths and creeds affected during the course of World War 2. Think about that.
Im referring to the burning of the jews in nazi ovens and the actions of the Imperial Japanese under the royal family during that particular time in human history when Japs raped and beheaded childeren in my homeland of the Philippines and enslaved the Chinese at Manchuria. For all the Nazi and Japs did in union with one another, cartoons like 11th Hour, Japoteurs, and Jungle are perfectly justified and understandable for their time, It shows why little pothead brats today wouldnt understand it.
very true and i know about that conflict between the japanese and philipinos/chinese. so much heat still ingers today, holding grudges worse than the sicilians or the arabs/israelis. its some serious shit in your culture, and i acknowledge and respect the beef, thats for damn sure.
"Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to soar higher than any plane, this amazing stranger from the planet Krypton the Man Of Steel: Superman!"
The first of the Superman cartoons filmed under the aegis of Famous Studios, Japoteurs begins with a Daily Planet headline letting the audience know that the U.S. has developed the world's largest bomber plane and that it will soon be making a test flight. The paper's top reporters, Clark Kent and Lois Lane, are allowed to take a tour of the plane prior to its flight, and see that, in addition to its other features, it can also serve as an airstrip for launching smaller planes
Ah, grow up and stop insisting everything is racist-we were at war with the Japanese, for crying out loud! They wanted to kill us, or at least rule us-what a shock they were depicted as evil! It wasn't all Japanese-just the ones we were at war with.
Haha, wellllll actually... they really were trying to depict that all Japanese were bad. It was propaganda to justify the Japanese American internment camps. After pearl harbor, anyone who was Japanese was considered the enemy so they round them up and threw them into internment camps. They used techniques like this in the superman show to make everyone think that every Japanese American is secretly urging to betray the US.
@xobile101 If Superman had rammed the door with full force, the door might have shot off the hinges and taken out the cockpit. So I guess Supes was trying to estimate how much force to use.
wtf is up with lois, honestly sneaking away every single lil chance she gets, and making superman run after her, it just gets old quick, lol, tho i wont get tired of these old cartoons, like ever
I'm not surprised. "Superman Returns" did had a fair amount of sequences that paid homage to the 1940's Superman, like the car rescue scene, the way he held it over his head was similar to the first Superman comic cover.
again a war prpoganda cartoon..Tuber 77 man how old are u?..u put the Sherlock vids (Basil ones) and these old cartoons...u r actually 77 i believe!...anyway thanks a lot for sharing ur vids..they r cool.
I disagree with you on one point m8. The Arabs are not our enemy now and haven't been our enemy in recent times (I assume you are either American, Australian, European or Canadian). The war on terror is NOT against the Arab World but on extremists bent on destroying our way of life.(These extremists are largely Islamic Arabs but are by no mean exclusively Arab or Islamic)
take it apart piece by piece, put it all onto trucks, then haul it back to the factory to be rebuilt. Provided, of course, someone remembers to pack up and take along all the bolts. Scotch Tape wouldn't work. LOL.
The only racist thing I saw was the fact that the Japanese agents were referred to as Japs, which in the day was acceptable to society at large. As far as the actual portrayal goes, I saw nothing wrong with it. They looked normal, they were competent, and behaved as saboteurs of any country would act. Don't forget, we weren't the only country showing propaganda. It's well-documented that the Japanese had cartoon propaganda as well.
Not Racist. Most Cartoons of this time would have a Japanese person shown as a buck toothed midget. Pause it at 1:46. The Japanese here look normal to me. Plus This cartoon Said ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING bad or degrading about Japanese race.
I know man. Just like most cartoons in the 40's depicted black people as being dumb and literally black, with huge lips. No, it's racist, and designed to stir up negative feelings against the Japanese, not just the nation. Lois knew the saboteurs were hijacking the plane because they weren't white, not because they had guns in view, or anything. And she called them "Japs". The whole film, despite the gorgeous animation, stinks of racism and jingoism.
I agree, those cross eyed, buck toothed, pidgin-english speaking characters in no way represent any cultural bias against the Japanese. The Germans were equally depicted as a cowardly, physically flawed people.
Lol. Its not racist at all. Back in those days, the Japanese were the badies, its like having Nazis as the baddies in the UK or Germany, or any part of Europe. They are just the baddies. It has nothing to do with race or culture.
it's not racist... this was actually a very good cartoon episode. Back when superman was actualyl worth watching. This was very typical at the time period. Plus since theres no such thing as 'race' for humans :P all of your comments about the racism are null and void :)
i wish you people wouldn't be so sensitive about this cartoon , it was made during the years of pre-WW2 for god's sake , kamikaze figthers and all . Whats so weird about another country trying to sabatoge another's weapons while at war , they still do such tactics till this day.
I don't really see any racism here. The saboteurs were highly competent enemy agents (certainly moreso than that American security guard). The leader scuttled the plane when it became obvious it could not be stolen, as any spy would. He shouldn't have tried to kill his hostage, that was just dumb, but that act is never tied to his race.
lol I have no sympathy for pre-WW2 Japan. They were the Asian version of the Nazis. They saw them self as the Masters of the Oriental Race and sought to remake all other Asians in there image.
Now I don't consider this Racist. It would only be Racist if they were portraying Japanese Americans but even then it's a thin line because are they making fun or the Japanese persona. It could will still affect the emotions of anyone that still shares in there Japanese culture and heritage. But in this form it's no different than making fun of Germans.
Racism is when the strong using there power to discriminate against the weak with the and the criteria for the discrimination has to be race based. This is more of a Nationality thing. It is more like making fun of a people from a fallen Tyrannical power. This is more of insult to injury than Racism.
This is a very narrow definition of racism, originally propagated by the Nation of Islam to allow them to embrace racist views without calling it racism. This definition is simply not accepted by the vast majority of sociologists, who view racism as existing irrespective of social status. A poor/disadvantaged/oppressed person can be just as racist as a rich one.
well i think demongod20's definition was pretty much on the mark . Rasicm is the act discrimination on another person based soley on their race , regardless of politics . But this particular cartoon was set during pre-WW2 therefore becoming a political thing and not a racial one .
I'm not sure. If you follow that definition, a poor, powerless white person can't ever be racist against a powerful person of another race, like Condi Rice, no matter what that white person does or says. I don't think this is what was meant, but the definition is a bit narrow. In actuality, racism is racism even if the racist is weak and the target is powerful. Its definition revolves more around prejudicial notions, attitudes, and actions of all types, rather than solely on how power is used.
(Just to clarify, the definition I referred to as being a bit narrow was the one that said "Racism is when the strong using there power to discriminate against the weak..." I agree with Riko that racism is based solely on one's race, regardless of politics.)
Riko1980 " ...this particular cartoon was set during pre-WW2..." (Just including the quote because I doubt the reply will appear under it) This was made in 1942, well after Pearl Harbor and the start of our war with Japan.
Too bad the racism, while understandable for the time period, holds this short back so much. Superman slowing the plane's descent is one of the coolest Superman moments ever.
