  • Thank you for uploading this video.

  • lol, I meant "Wheat Kings"

  • the song is about an teenage guy who kills the man who raped his sister. he goes to "Millhaven Maximum Security" prison, where most of the inmates are from towns with "long french names". he's still in prison at 38 and "hasn't kissed a girl", because he's been in prison since he was a teen. true story as far as I know. a similar true story telling song of theirs is "Wheat Chiefs"

  • @78hiwatts "Wheat Kings" is based on the true story of David Milgaard. "38 Years Old" is purely fiction.

  • Downie is God.

  • i wish this was played at downs view park this year

  • i wish this was played at downs veiw park this year

  • I was at this show!! :P

  • This is the song that drew me to the Hip. Big fan of theirs here in India.

  • i must sound like an idiot but does anybody know what eventually happened, like did that mike guy end up escaping for good, when he was 38?

  • I was born in 1973...38 years ago...today...this must be my champagne song!

  • The hip always seemed like a better version of R.E.M to me ... with a bigger library of greater songs...

  • I was there. And it was fuckin' A!

  • The Hip Rocks, first heard em on WXRT in Chicago The song was ( New Orleans is Sinking) Saw them twice in the late 80's . Gordy's a show by himself. They are a fantastic band that needs more air time. Spread the word.

  • isn't this song based on a true story?

  • @JtD1331 ya its a true story. he's basicalyl telling the story. playing the role of the one boy michael. ive heard dumb ppl try to convince me that it was gord downie's brother and stuff like that. but its not. just a story of a prison breakout in kingston.

  • He's 38 years old, never sniffed a girl.....

  • @juzu4me lmfao xD

  • @juzu4me i believe its never kissed a girl

  • Haha! I love gord. Such a nice guy also.

  • he sings it with the emotion as if this story was true its what makes this song 1 million times better

  • The way this song tells a linear story is totally unique to the rest of the Hip catalogue. They never recorded anything else like it. I still love Up to Here. It hasn't aged a day.

  • my was in prison with this guy....

he wrote this song in prison when he was in the weight yard on a field day

my dad was serving a life sentence in millhaven institution when he met the lead singer

  • @oagyoag youre wrong

  • Oh Gord. Your voice is so dynamic.

If it were a phsyical entity, I would fuck it.

  • @michaelbeairst Actually, no I wouldn't. It would reject me because Gods and Humans shouldn't mingle.

  • "He" would be 75 now...

  • Corner Gas, Trailer Park Boys and The Hip.......Canada you're awesome!!!

  • thanks

  • hockey too eh

  • I love AMERICA and THE HIP

  • I LOVE CANADA and THE HIP

  • we are the Hip, we are canadian..

  • if i were a singer writer and poet thats how i would do it.

  • what copy right?

  • man the hip fucking own

  • i havta agree with comedyking the americans caNT compare to good music and good comedy which usually comes from canada if canada builds anythign its usually shitty

but for entertainment canada and england rock

  • fuck u u suck cock bitch

  • that was not me... fucking hackers thay can suck cock... i love Tragically Hip XD

  • I'll have you know that US nuclear ballistic submarines (Franklin and Ohio class) were built in Montreal, as were the elevators and catapults for US aircraft carriers. Oh, and the atomic bomb? Uranium from Ontario, Chalk River.

Engineers who put the US on the moon? Most of them were expats from Canada disgruntled at having the Avro Arrow then the most advanced fighter-bomber of its time cancelled (at US insistence).

  • Gothblood:

Our work of civil engineering are second to none. Just look in northern Quebec at our hydro electric dam complexes, we had to invent a new kind of concrete to build it.

  • canada builds fucking great things!

    WE ARE CANADA

  • i agree!!

  • Wish they played that in Victoria this tour, oh well, not at the show i was at anyway

  • did time in millhaven, love this song. understand what they r talkin about completely. respect

  • Fucking great !~

  • in the last 8 months i discovered trailer park boys and the hip both are awesome. with all the shitty bands in the states i can't believe a great band like this 90% of america havent heard of them.i like to know if they come close to louisville,ky i will be there. GREAT FUCKING BAND long live the hip.

  • Dude, I was born in Canada but I've lived in America most of my life. When I first found out about The Hip and Trailer Park Boys, I completely separated myself from American entertainment. I mainly listen and watch Canadian and British entertainment (The Hip, RUSH, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, TPB, Corner Gas, Doctor Who). The States can't compare.

  • As Canadian as I am, you can't be serious..

  • Well no, not really, there was quite a bit of exaggeration there. I'm just saying that I prefer Canadian entertainment since I've been deprived of a lot of it for so long.

  • That makes a lot of sense, i totally respect that

  • The music I think can't compare, but Television, i think that America got more great shows currently (House and Bones for example) than Canadian. Corner Gas was great and TPB was okay, but a little much in my opinion.

  • Blame their tour managers ... promoters ... been in US for 19 years -- as CDN .... have many many friends involved in music ... it's not the people in US ... it's inability of their lack luster management --

  • seen the hip last night...they rocked

  • holy fuck the hip are amazing, may 11th at massy hall i cant fucking wait, first claypool now the hip my life is awesome

  • i wanted to go see them dam it soooooo bad

  • awesome song. one of the best acoustic riffs iv'e ever heard.

  • what year did the Tragically Hip first start off?

  • That depends on who you ask. Their first album was released in 1987.

  • @hipfans 1989* ?

  • @NezbittheGreyKitten The EP was released on November 20, 1987.

  • @twinprographics oh ok, i saw album, not EP. first *album* was 1989, up to here i guess?

  • They first got together in 1983 in Kingston Ontario, first album 4 years later

  • @straightfromhell87 1984 bud, their first album was released in 1987

  • @straightfromhell87 Here is a little bit of Hip History

Before the band started Gord Downie and Rob Baker were best

friends and lived right next to each other. They went to

school in Kingstin Ontairo Canada and met the other band

members. They formed the band in 1984. Their first album

was realsed in 1987. The bands name comes from a movie.

They were watching a movie called "Elephant Parts" and a

small part in the movie people were asking for donations they called the tragically hip

  • @straightfromhell87 think i first saw them in the bars in Kingston in '85

  • holy fuck thats amazing

  • amazing...just wow is all i can say

    god fucking bless the hip

  • I heard they never play this song live? am I wrong? or did they just recently start playing it live or something?

  • What? They are the best bad of all time. Canadian Rock icons. They formed in 1983 and have been rockin' ever since. This song was released 1989!

  • sorry for that last post...I was trying to respond to someone who can't belive.

  • What are you talking about? It's not fiddler's green.

  • I was there! Thanks for all the hard work Chris et al!
