  • why seagate fails

    WD FTW

  • i have the same problem, same beep, happenning randomly on a clevo w860cu oO

  • Wen you SeaGate, Seagate's CEO helps you watch porn then kills your Hard Drive.

  • plz tell me what game that is

  • Halo: Combat Evolved

  • i've had a 500 gig seagate momentus 5400.6 fail on me for the last time. this time it went belly up and i was unable to get anything. So i had to make a decision, smash it or send it back for the 2nd time.. well. i smashed it with a hammer i learned my lesson. im sticking with WD i have 3 WD black drives 2 scoprios and 1 caviar black that work perfectly and seagate's "ceritifed" repair drives are as crappy as the serviceable used part deskstars get a WD you will be much happier.

  • just disable the SMS (Sudden motion sensor)

    open terminal and type:

    sudo pmset -a sms 0

  • woot you playing anyway? ^^

  • hey, did you solve this problem with the new upgrade?

  • So far so good. No beeps, no brief pauses - just the odd 30 sec beach balls which is presumably something else Apple has yet to fix!

  • ? beach balls?

  • The key here is not to blame seagate, is to make responsible to Apple for being so "political" about this serious issue. In my case It's easy to try one of my 4 internal laptop hard drives to make sure it's nothing else, ok I only bought this faulty drive for PC use, on my $350 laptop, If I would spent 2 grand on a laptop, I would get mad and take legal actions right away, Apple should not hesitate and replace hard drives for defective units right away, if it's defective will remain defective.

  • @superpowter77 Apple's policy is that if there is even ONE defective sector, replace the drive. They do not tolerate bad or questionable hard drives: their policy is to replace them if they are bad, period. Apple is REALLY GOOD a out this!

  • the problem's with Seagate's Harddrive. U need to get a new one or Apple hopefully recalls very expensive HDs.

  • If believe that's when it _should_ happen. This "issue" is that it happens frequently and inappropriately while the computer is active and at rest on a solid surface.

  • If you suddenly shake your computer you'll hear it happening

  • Damn it, I have exactly the same thing. Except it becomes nonresponsive for up to 30 seconds. Drives me NUTS.

  • What game is this?

  • Halo Combat Evolved, UB for Mac

  • People need to start organizing protests outside Apple Stores. The only thing they care about is money, and direct action raises the tantalizing possibility of giving them bad press, which would terrify them (just like all their exploding Ipods)

  • 4 day old MBP and i had this issue from day one, really frustrating and interferes with video capturing/editing. unbelievable how apple aren't acknowledging it yet.

  • yup this is what i have too .. sux bad... apparently there are 2 firmwares for that 500 gig 7200 rpm drive i wonder if its the same drive.. or if the other firmware belongs to the Non gforce version

  • Thanks for posting. Next time i go to the genius bar they won't think i'm crazy

  • now im worried. im planing on getting the 17inch by the first week of september and i really liked the 7200rpm but now i guess ill go for 5400rpm. No churping More batterie life i guess. But is 5400rpm good enough to play games?

  • I'm going to buy a new macbook pro now that i know about this issue should i get the 5400 RPM Drive or the 7200 RPM Drive?

  • I recommend getting the 5400rpm drive, this issue with Apple's current choice in 7200rpm drives is very noticeable and gets to be incredibly annoying. Also, it is not likely to be fixed soon because even after 3 phone calls to Apple and countless online discussions they are not taking this issue seriously (during 2 of the 3 phone calls I was told that this is normal drive operation...*sigh*). I'm currently sending in my new MBP for a replacement with a 5400rpm drive.

  • Thanks for posting, I have the same issue with my MBP (HD: 500GB Seagate Model: ST9500420ASG). Apple seriously needs to do something about this.

  • I have the same drive and have not noticed this problem in my 2-week old 17" MBP, so maybe Apple have fixed the issue?

  • Nope. Mine 15" is just a few weeks old and I hear this noise about once a day. I looked into it more, and read somewhere that Seagate said that it's an issue with the sudden motion sensor that's built into the drive, and that the drive shouldn't be used in a computer that already has its own sudden motion sensor (like the MacBook Pros). :(

  • Comment removed

  • I don't know. I bought mine in July, 17" 2.8 with 7200 rpm and it does it once every day

  • HEY APPLE, WE WANT OUR MONEY BACK!

  • wow, thanks for posting this. I'm having the same problem! June 2009 MBP w/ 500GB ST9500420ASG
