yeah...i 've always HATED being a consumer... this movie is an eye-opener! see n listen to what the THE CAPITALIST WHITE BUSHY PIG has to say n be enlightened, people!
The way this plays on first world guilt, prejudice against the working class is just juvenile. I cant take this seriously. This is probably geared towards high school/college aged people.
Clinton didn't leave a surplus but a $1.4 trillion debt over eight years. He borrowed from Social Security, part of a $115 Trillion unfunded liability, to make it seem he left a surplus. See my about me for links.
Another great example of the disease of modern consumerism is hoarding. Watch a show like Hoarders Buried Alive and you will see the mind responding to being forced into consuming and discarding in an endless cycle. With some people, it literally does not compute, and their mind breaks.
Other descent films on this subject include "The Corporation" & "Capitalism - A Love Story". I do not agree that to progress we need to regress. But i do believe that the vast majority of us are living out are lives in complete ignorance to what should be fundamentally important to us as human beings. Instead we concentrate on entertainment and consumption.
We are very quickly becoming idle slaves to the elite class' and soon there will be NOTHING that can be done. Maybe that's already the case.
I agree with the film and Mr. Zerzan that we live in a soceity which focuses too much on conspicuous consumption and that it's damaging both the environment and to the way humans socially relate to each other. But what's his solution? Bring the world back to hunter gatherer times (good luck first of all, even Zerzan admits that bringing soceity back to that is an extremely difficult task) where human beings lived about half the life span we do now? Sorry, I can't agree.
What I don't really like is the rave-party-ish cut the director gave to this movie. For the rest, what is there to say after the Gulf oil spill...??? WE'RE ROYALLY FUCKED, and...

I disagree, the higher eschelons of the corporate world are full of Narcissists and Sociopaths who absolutely LOVE this system (because it gives power and wealth at the expense of the poor)
It's so important to get these issues to as many people as possible. Its such a big deal and if everyone really understood about the depth of whats going on.. we would have a chance to deal with things and change things. Right? Other then just talking about it between a select few. I'd hope it'd be on every newspaper and headlines.;
My theory is the only way to really affect things is for the majority to open up and realize. We don't have money to change things. But we have numbers. If we all decided through intelligent discussion and realization of reality to do what needed to be done...That would be the key.
I like this film... so far it has just shown me some nice images with a little info. The best part is it just has someone think about it for themselves and draw their own conclusions. It is like guided self reflection and meditation.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: For the trivial stuff like say, cat food, we have 140 different brands to choose from. Same thing for cars, cigarettes, dish soap, shampoo, underwear, lighting fixtures, dozens and dozens of choices. But for the really important stuff like oh, a presidential election, we get 2 choices. 2 shitty choices out of the 300,000,000 plus people who live in the united States. If that doesn't smack of a rigged system nothing does. Wake up. Stop participating.
it isn't possible to stop participating. everywhere you go you are part of the economy--it is the underlying system by which our daily lives are run. show me otherwise? even when you are on the streets, you are participating.
probably the only thing that could stop the worldwide consumerist fervor is a natural disaster so large that the global network of commerce is shutdown for so long that no significant recovery is possible. it would have to be cataclysmic.
nope. just plain wrong im afraid. money is an illusion, a token of value which we should be holding individually within ourselves. We can all stop working right now and help each other with no money involved. thats it. thats all.
i disagree. look, my main point is this: go to the poorest parts of the world. obviously, they are getting screwed over by the economy. so why wouldn't they simply "stop working right now and help each other with no money involved"? After all, they have no use for it, right?
But no, it isn't that simple. Instead they break their backs for less than a dollar a day, and will do that until they die. So maybe in a rich country like America, you can dream your utopia, but what does it matter?
there are sources to get things for free: food bank, donated clothing, shelters, etc. that does not imply that you are exiting the economy. these are two different things.
a world finnacial crysis has begun man... but not a natural disaster so the human consumerism could be stopped, u r right, to stop human consumerism a huge disaster must happen
Well, it's food for thought, but an advantage of the two party system is that, theoretically, the majority of the nation gets what they wanted to a certain extent. If we had hundreds of presidential choices, the winning candidate would likely have less than 10% of the popular vote. So you'd have 90% of the population putting up with something they never voted for.
I know it's not that black or white, but it's also not as black or white as your argument.
I'm fucking sick of the hierarchical structures of the exploitative, capitalistic and oppressive system that shits out corporate politicians who use propaganda to convince the mass society that they are free..
Very good. All articulation on this subject is dire. But I think that what can be got from this situation that the world finds itself in today is a lesson. We are in an oil civilization one that is propped up, where kids in various countries can spend entire days watching videos about culture. And its propped up by oil, ghost slaves as Jensen puts it. THe world with oil is supporting 6 billion people and without it can maybe support 2 billion, maybe. And its only a matter of time.
christmas is the worst time for consumption, mothers buying cart loads of junk toys, heaps of usless garbage, that will find it place in the heap in the corner of the basement, hows that for your bottom line.
There's a simple way to change the system; don't buy dumb stuff. I don't own a car, half my furniture was taken out of trash and I don't buy fancy foodstuff.
On the other side, I own a HD TV and an expensive Canon camera. No-one bended my arm to buy those two items. I brought them because I wanted too. What's wrong with that?
well, it may not terrorize you, but it does someone - consumer electronics like the ones you own contain coltan - a metallic ore, the mining of which seriously fucks up the habitats of the endangered gorillas (did you read recently how they're like this close to full out extinction, except for zoos?)
So, what you are telling me is that we shouldn't mine for Coltan because of gorrilas? By itself, that arguement doesn't take water. It's like telling that we need to forget nuclear energy because Ukranians don't know how to operate a nuclear reactor; there's no link.
everybody has to stop being such tools on comment forums and "spam"ming people who have slightly different opinions, despite their comments not at all being spam. none of your activists goals will prosper unless you can learn to unite
and the exportation of coltan has fueled a war in the congo that's cost the lives of over 4 million people - that's a lot of innocent black people - i guess the LAPD has nothing on sony. and don't forget the products were probably put together in china, and they don't exactly treat those sweatshop kids to nice
i'm not sure any political scientist would agree w/ you that there's no link - it's very well documented i'm afraid and there's a pretty tenable consensus. it's cute that u obviously had to put on your big boy's thinking cap to try and articulate your little tantrum though. as for yr prostitute comment, a fair amount of sexual predation actually does occur in sweatshops. at least prostitutes get paid
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There's no link. If a man want war, war is what he will get. Natural resources have nothing to do with this. If his desire is true, he will find financing.
As far as sweatshops goes, if it was such an horrible thing, why people are still going there? Do this very video talk about the wonders of living from the land? Why not going back in rural areas?
in fact, they treated slaves far better than those workers - w/ slaves, u have to feed, clothe, shelter them and pay for a doctor when they get sick - with overseas workers, they pay a very small fraction of those living expenses
Come on, you Coltan lover! You hate the ore with a passion but you don't have any problem in using a machine made with it? You says "But it doesn't belongs to me!" as if it makes you a saint.
By your actions, you increase the traffic on the internet, thus creating a demand for more upgrades across this webside and elswhere. So you are generating a demand for Coltan by posting here.
i'm afraid net traffic doesn't contribute to computer manufacture - you're saying my friend getting a computer out of a dumpster encourages the companies to make more? you should totally get a job working for bush, dick, and colon - then you could get PAID to be this retarded - have fun at the next walmart super-sale
*** i'm afraid net traffic doesn't contribute to computer manufacture ***

You can stop this you know. Don't answer to this post and leave Internet. It will be better for the primates.
dang, i really thought i could trick you there - well, to counter yr point is pretty easy - it's totally unnecessary to buy new computers to accommodate their servers - there're plenty organizations devoted to recycling perfectly usable computers to prevent further consumption - one of them is freegeek
...and then the recycled PC will be sold at an inferior price, allowing someone who doesn't own one due to the expense to acquire one.
This person will use the Internet and generate more trafic, who will affect the whole Net-infrastructure of servers. These servers will spin more and will need remplacement also.
On the other side, obsolescence will get that PC one day or another. At that moment, you will need new ore to make a new PC.
i'm not talking about the general public, i'm saying it's silly to say that increased net traffic forces them to buy new computers for servers when they can very easily, very efficiently, and very cost-effectively use recycled pc's to prevent further waste and destructive consumption
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You are talking to someone who got many friends in IT and computers fields. You could be amazed by the ammount of hard disks they can go throught every week.
Yes, PC and their components can be safely recycled. My point is, it wouldn't change anything related to Congo's politics and primate survival unless an action is directed with definited goals. Right now, the only goal achieved by buying a recycled PC is mostly personal in scope.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If you want to have an impact on Congo or on primate safety, may I suggest you became a member of Amnesty International, Wild World Fund or the Sierra Club?
Be sure that any action in these organizations will have a higher impact on your goals than buying a recycled PC, regardless of noble you think it can be.
Do those workers have a government to protect them? Why that governemnt is not stepping in?
If you don't fight for your rights, you let someone else abuse of them. If you are not involved politicaly, you got a governemnt chosen by others. The "Orange Revolution" is a perfect example.
Once again, you don't fight for it, you will not have it.
we have a system that is inherently flawed. you talk of "economy" and "inflation". that sort of thinking is still inside the box of our current, flawed paradigm.
we need a new system. i don't have the answers, and neither do these guys - the point is they're acknowledging the problem, and they're spreading the word in the hopes that someone, somewhere MIGHT be able to conceive of a way forward that is fair, equitable to all nations (nations, another anachronism) and sustainable.
Yeah, you can choose between brand A, B, and C, and you can also choose no brand at all, if the product is not something you want or need. Fuck, how much more freedom is possible, eh?
Anti-consumption would stop the economy, causing inflation. Then making needs, such as food, cost WAY too much. Yes the mindless desire for the newest iPod is dumb... but the business that goes into Apple, HP, Sony. They are making new technology making better computers for everyone. This in turn allows all fields of business to do better. I don't agree with this war we're in but not consuming isn't going to stop it... Our decision in 2008 is what it's really going to come down to.

2008 won't change anything as far as the War. And the winner was picked long ago.
