  • The scene where he goes back to her apartment after she dies is poignant. Surprising to see the actress who played the maid on the tv show Maude in this film. The baby faced boyfriend of the girl in the bar had a unique & memorable face. Laurence Harvey & Simone Signoret were fantastic in this movie that resembled the Liz Taylor movie,"A Place In The sun." THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS WONDERFUL MOVIE !

  • So sad for poor Alice who died broken hearted, while he will go on with his rich life and family, eventually learning to love that girl and of course all the luxories.

  • Many thanks for this upload I liked this film very much when I was younger but hadnt seen it for years the book by John Braine is also excellent I really appreciated Simones performance this time imagine calling her an "old whore" when she is only supposed to be 34 years old(in the novel anyway) and has such dignity!

  • @lana4581 Yes, I remember in the book she was just in her mid-30s. It's so funny to think that was considered "over the hill" for a woman then.

  • Great movie, thanks so much for uploading, the difference between love, lust and lunacy.

  • what a wonderful movie. thank you for posting

  • Great movie. It wasn't on netflix and I was excited to find the film online. Great job. I taped the sequel off of TCM -- it's called Life at The Top, not as powerful as this film, but still a worthwhile film.

  • Loved it thxx u!!!!!!

  • wonderful movie! the musical socre was also superb!

  • I get this incredibly sad feeling of loss whenever I watch the scene of Joe going into the apartment the morning after and finding the sweater Alice gave him. What a heartbreaking movie. Thanks for posting.

  • Thank God society has changed!

  • lol at 0.46 he sounds like Terry 'the wig' Wogan

  • Wonderful movie. Thanks so much!

  • Hermoine Baddely is really is quite extraordinary here

  • @The1962driftingaway I read she held the record for the shortest appearance in a movie to be nominated for an Oscar.

  • He quoted Shakespeare : "to thine own self be true ...." [Part-9, 03.54], but couldn't live up to those precepts!

  • " I hate the way some people have troube spelling my name."

  • Ugh, hated that fake crying at the end by Harevy.

  • Amazing.

I've seen this before, of course, a long time ago, but I've enjoyed it very much. It's even better than I remembered, and that doesn't happen often!

But it's kinda funny/sad to see how the numbers of viewers dwindled from installment to installment... (:

Not enough "action", blood and gore, eh?

  • Darn the ending was sad. I bet he can't be himself anymore. Poor, poor Alice.

  • Marriage- oh, the horror!

  • the ending is weird

  • Great story!

    Thanks for uploading it.

  • Thank you for uploading this movie. I had seen it a long time ago, was looking for it on ebay and had the pleasure of watching it here. Very kind of you to do this.

  • @nothumbs24

I totally agree with you, I read the book last week and wanted to see how Joe was visualised by the director. Brilliant, thanks to whoever posted it.

  • Wow, what a film, such a sad story, a morality tale. Yes, early Derren Nesbitt! I thought Derren did really well here.

  • Great photography, thanks for sharing, noticed Derren Nesbitt as well

  • Bravo!

  • Thank you for this excellent upload. All the players in this are marvelous. This story indicates or suggests that life isn't fair. Actually, it seems that way, but we are only the players and cannot pre-arrange much of life in general. We have to go with the flow a great deal. Harvey and Signoret -magnificent.

  • NOOO! How could Alice die? I loved Alice, and so did Joe: he loved her so much, and yet he let her go! I cannot believe it. I have never read the book, but if it is anything as heartbreaking as the movie I am not sure if I will read it. Both Lawrence and Simone were brilliant, as well as all of the supporting characters.

    4/5

  • Never liked the collaborationist old bag.
