The M18 Hellcat was the pinnacle of American tank destroy doctrine. Lightly armored, insane speeds, and a powerful gun (the M18 was planned to be up-gunned to a 90mm gun which would have similar power and penetration as the German 8.8 cm KwK 36 (Used in the German Tiger 1). The tank could go up to 60 mph reliably, at 65 mph the gun controls became hard to handle, and the max speed was 71 mph (compare that with the 24 mph ideal speed of a Tiger 1!). It turned on a dime and had great acceleration.
It could out turn most German tanks' turrets (all the heavies without a doubt) and hide very well for an ambush due to its' low profile. The M18 Hellcat was extremely powerful and successful, so much so that the all tank destroyers were desired to be M18s. That 90mm version (which had similar power and penetration to the Tiger 1's gun) was used in the M26 Pershing (US's only heavy vehicle, although it only weighed as much as a panther) and scrapped from the M18 because the war had ended.
Actually German tanks were not better, they were very much mediocre. On the other hand, Soviet designs were superb (although crew comfort was lacking!).
For example, the Panther , while it's frontal armor was hard to penetrate, was easy to kill from the side and rear even at far ranges. In addition, the load of the frontal armor caused the front torsion bars (suspension) to snap all the time such that 2/3 of the Panther force would break down before ever seeing a battlefield.
In addition, the overly complicated suspension as well as the interleaved road wheel system (which was developed to spread the weight of the tank more evenly) was all prone to breakdown and required large amounts of time in shop to repair.
The heavier tanks, the Tiger 1 and Tiger 2 could not even maneuver on Europe's bridges and were too slow and too few to make much a difference. They could be flanked and destroyed without mercy.
An example of German inferiority, the Soviets built a the IS-2
IS-2 was 10 tons lighter than the Tiger 1 and accomplished much the same in terms of firepower, protection, and mobility.
The reason why German tanks were so successful is rather because of the experience of the tankers (the tanker has a lot more influence of the performance of a tank than the tank's components, and the correct doctrine for tank warfare.
As an example, in some battles where the Germans outnumbers the Soviets, they lost. In another, the opposite occurred.
