xenoxiq..Had a few names in different formats, The Rapiers, The Clansmen, The Fonebones...never made it past village halls and Aylesbury Borough Assembly Hall in the 60's. In the original form as an instrumental line up, the band actually backed Gerry and the Pacemakers at High Wycombe Town Hall. Aaaah heady days.
Ace recording, never heard it, only ever heard this off the My Generation L.P. great to hear another studio cut, excellent one as well, thanks for posting. From a life long Who fan who was in a band in the 60's trying like s**t to take these off.
@varfurile1 Hey man, forgive the lateness - what was the name of your group? My dad tried to get started in music too apparently - a group called "The Shambles".

Man ...this is so tits! Thanks again xenoxiq...it's people like you that make the internet cool. Portland, Oregon Jam fan shoutin you out...So glad to be reminded there's people in the world who are ....well, that like the WHo. Yeah!
@MrGb1965: I'm not sure what you mean but on the Smothers Brothers show they did My Generation and I Can See For Miles. Before that show was aired they recorded the songs live in an LA recording studio then simply lip synched to the recording later for the show. This song was recorded for a live BBC broadcast where they went into a studio, cut a bunch of songs live, then handed the tapes over to the BBC. The tapes were owned by the BBC and thirty years later they released it as an album.
I know they lip synched for Smothers Brothers, and I know the BBC album was released in 2000. Thank you for confirming that "The Good's Gone" was recorded before it was aired on the BBC. My question would be answered, if it is known that the recording was was done after the My Generation album's recording. Your statement earlier about this being a live radio broadcast conflicts with this post.
@MrGb1965: Yes it was. The My Generation album was recorded in October of 1965 and released to the public on December 3rd. This version you are hearing was recorded November 22 for radio transmission only and was broadcast on the BBC on November 27th. As it turns out I was incorrect that the album had already come out. In fact, the album was literally being pressed at the time of this recording. My source is a book I have on them. Actually I prefer this version to the album version myself.
I still can't resist dragging my vinyls out for a listen now and then - I have 12 Who singles I think. Some Brunswick labelled, a couple of reaction too, I believe somewhere.
Different in a very simple way: I didn't realize I was listening to BBC with Alexis Korner and not the studio recording from the LP. I was cleaning house and thought Alexis was a vacuum cleaner or sink drain.
This song is amazing. and its even better with jd in the system! I will love the who until i die!

64,000 dollar question here; what type of fuzz pedal is Townhend using on this song? ANYONE KNOW? I would love to know myself.
scott51381 1 year ago
@scott51381 It was probably a Tone Bender fuzz box. You can check out their gear at thewho.net/whotabs/gear Can I have my money now? :-P

There is something shivery lovely about the Edison Disc design of that old Brunswick label with "The Good's Gone" and "The Who" below the trademark.
Take it, Moon, and please give our best to Stanshall.
