@hoorahjingo To be fair Bukowski often smoked pot, I think he just was trying to live up to his image in this documentary. He also did LSD, pills, and so on. He just loved booze the most, as I do. I've done plenty of weed but I prefer beer.
@drc0086 He talks about it in "Women". He apparently did coke for a while but it was too expensive and whatnot, he also smokes weed throughout that novel, takes pills, and such. It's also in the Howard Sounes bio of him I believe.
Pot is like a candy that rots the teeth of the mind. Booze is no better just different so - each to their own poison. (Accident and Emergency at my local hospital is a blood-bath most weekends - and no potheads always drunks and the odd crackhead ...) but as the old saying has it: 'A Drug is a Man's Best Friend' ain't that right Hank!
He's right about pot. Pot isn't horrible but people who smoke tend to turn into soft mounds of shit, they are SO laid back it hurts them in the long run, they think they have profound ideas but they're just hippie pipe dreams. Now Drinking?? DRINKING is the purest form of escapism possible, Unless you're downing a 5th of booze a night you can get a HANDLE on it, and escape the horrors of life for a few hours, come down, and be back as King Shit again. Drinking puts a wall up that keeps one safe.
...shitty society...anybody who can understand what he means would hate what he represents in himself and about he writes, because he represents our society, our time. The mob's time, the decadent's time...
this is a good one. Hank is lucid and on point. i don't know if i agree with his theory on pot. i've known long time pot smokers who are smart as a whip and i know drunkards who are pickled stupid. depends on who you are... and what you can take. That's all.
@johnyard I dunno. It's been just the opposite for me. When I smoked pot, I thought I was smart and deep and shit. Then I switched to alcohol, and whenever I look back at how dumb I was...it just makes me so fuckin' embarrassed. Every stoner I've ever met was thought to be smart by his peers, but I can't help see the stupidity shine through.
@johnyard i know many pot smokers who are stupid or smart. I also know many non-smokers who are stupid or smart. I do not see any hints on the assumption that smoking pot makes one smart as it is usually not the cause but the effect of some smart people. However, heavy usage of pot might absorbs a huge part of creativity and therefore make an intelligent fellow slightly dumber, but often its unnoticeable for ones stupid environment- still tragic for ones potential imo.
