  • Damn, there is a dictionary right on the computer.

BIGOT...one who regards or treats the members of a group with hatred.

HYPOCRITE....a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings.

So, you dont support the troops and live in America, I call you IDIOT.

  • wow did they just destroy an IED by giving it a tan ?? how about putting an explosive round through it ...but then some company wouldnt get their multi-billion dollar contract from the gov.

  • OK, the laser does work but at what cost? This is probably a solid state laser firing several kilowatts. Big, heavy, and expensive. Can we stop wasting money on toys for the amusement of the press and actually make something the troops can use?

  • OK, the laser works but how much? Can it fit in a Humvee? This is surely a solid state laser firing several kilowatts of power at a cost of $800k + each. Big, heavy, and expensive. Can we spend money on a project that the troops can actually use?

  • So now instead of the possibility of a quick death from defusing a bomb. People will get a nice dose of radiation operating this laser. More flipper babies.:p

  • Physics fail.

LASERs do not release any radiation, unless, of course, what you're shooting at is radioactive. A LASER is an extremely concentrated, coherent beam of light.

MASERs are basically the same principle, but use microwaves.

GRASERs are gamma-ray lasers, and will release a fair amount of radiation--almost all of it coming from the nuclear weapon used to generate the gamma rays.

  • It's from a Humvee.

  • For people that thinks this is actually a plane using a lazer then get a life. The explosion goes so fast because its small, if it was a tank, it would appear slower because its bigger. This is filmed in a garden.

    Lame.

  • I looked through the comments and there is a wweeiirrdd trend with giving certain types of comments "poor" ratings. Wonder why any comment in relation to this having potential of being useful in the future is deemed poor. Of and anyone who says it is useless gets a thumbs up, weird weird people.

  • @XioNilrem Well as you already know the world is going to be over run my morons before 2020 lol. I guess they don't see the potential in being safe and taking out dangerous objects from afar. I say we send all them out there to disarm them by hand, Then let them comment lol.

  • Only cool if the laser can track it while it shooting through the air.. And boost the intensity, it took too long.

  • waste of taxpayer monies. it would be great if all the ied's were lying right out in the open for our guys to "beam" them. but hey if it's lying out in the open like that a .50 cal. round would do the same thing.

  • @abolof I wonder how visible the beam itself is. Maybe there is room for some sneakiness where ballistics would be way too noisy.

  • ummmm, won't the ied go BOOM?

  • @abolof well yeah, I guess you're right. Its just cool cuz its LAZORS! OK. Hah ha.

  • Only good if you spot the IED first other wise its BOOM!

  • This will certainly help to get rid of all of those pesky IEDs that are laying around in plain view.

  • Good idea. for mine bomb land in Vietnam war or Iraq mine bomb or use armed bomb robot. WAR AND TERRIOSTS are iIlegal.

  • do you speak english?

  • Yes, why ?

  • just use the lasers on the terrorists lol

  • This should be rated higher. This is awesome!

I wonder what type of laser system they're using.

  • not quite impressed yet.. I would like to see a laser that makes objects burst in instant. a bigger beam and be able to carry it on a battlefield or in those situations. But it's a start =)

  • K, so in the side bar, these results were made public by Boeing...

Really? As in the guys who make Boeing 747s?

Huh, never knew before they were involved in self-defense stuff.

  • yea i think i seen something on modern marvels or some show similar that they want to put these lasers on the front of their planes for anti air defense.

  • Arm commercial airlines with potentially dangerous weapons...

What in the HOLY FUCK could possibly go wrong?!

  • Surely no terrorists could hijack it and bomb places. That's just absurd.

  • @Lazy0Waffle You should watch Hurt Locker, then you will understand why this would be useful.

  • Boeing does a lot, they were the runner ups for designing the next generation of fighter jets.

  • That's pretty rad.... hope it's used for good.

  • Amazing Technology! Really makes it easier for the men at Bomb Squad.

  • I'm not one for war but I do support new technologies like this that are proof of concept. And no I don't support our troops.

  • Comment removed

  • @drewteri

I have no reason to support war; thus I don't support the troops.

  • netsoj- well at least you're being honest about your bigotry

  • diablogamer45: Well atleast you're the typical American who doesn't know what the word bigot even means. Bigotry is saying something and doing another; I don't support the war, therefore I don't support the troops.

  • Useless they have to find the IED first which is the hardest part destroying it can be done a numerous ways

  • useless? honestly? no one said this laser is going to end all terrorism... it's just a new bit of technology with a practical application.

  • wow

  • oh no! this destroys my evil plot!

when trying to kill american occupiers in my country i am always trying to find high, open spots to place my explosives! ya know, on top of high rocks or highly visible line-of-site areas where a laser could easily penetrate them.

wow, this really has me bummed. guess it's back to land mines for me! ya know, under-ground where lasers can't do JACK CRAP!!!

p/s couldn't they just shoot these retard IED's with a 308 rifle and forgo the laser jazz?

  • WHAT?

  • Ok, great - but the thing about IED's is that they're hidden, right?

  • god bless america

  • Why go and post something like that?

  • it take too long, just put some c4 and job well done!

  • @losbergs2

Putting down that C4 means you have to get next to it, this you can be at the horizon line.

  • Laser is reusable, overall lighter to carry than enough c4 to destroy the same number of IEDs, laser is more accurate and doesn't involve having to walk up to the IED to place and arm the C4.

  • @JD2005 you do realize that the Laser Avenger that there showing is mounted on a Humvee not carried by a soldier, although it is a safer way to dispose of IEDs if you can find them that is.

  • Maybe mounted on a humvee right now, but technology gets smaller as it is refined. In any case, still lighter (and safer for that matter) than a humvee full of explosives.

  • the whole point is to do it at a range.

  • awesome - hopefully this will save lives
