What a haunting, yet wistful song. Clearly Battleship Hill refers to the Gallipoli campaign of WWI and yet there is something timeless and placeless about it too. A very human song full of sorrow and yet there is this realization contained within that leaves me speechless and sad yet manic and hopeful. Hard to explain.True genius here. Probably the best song dealing with war I have ever heard imho.
this isn't the album of the year,it's the album of the last 20 years.polly is the perfect example of why the uk has and will forever be the greatest singers, songwriters, musicians, film makers and so much more.
This track is pretty powerful stuff with Polly's haunting vocals rising above an English Folk melody, as if you would be standing on the site of where war that raged on in the trenches all those years ago
Being new to PJ Harvey I am unsure about the controversy her work appears to provoke.
Letengland shake is no doubt a highly original piece of work and it is good to see the tradition of poetic material in modern music is recognised by her achievement.
However, pop music it is not! Much of the praise and criticism seems to miss the point that it may be generated only as a result of questionable categorization leading to misunderstandings as to what this form of art is and is not.
Senti Polly Jean io lo so che è volgare però ogni volta che sento questa canzone me la faccio addosso da quanto è bella. Ti prego spiegami da che pianeta vieni perchè vorrei farci un giro anche io......
Brilliant ~ Love the atmospheric tricks in this song (unison voices (set the fire to the third bar) and piano runs down (be here now)) combined with great voice and lyrics ~ and the war drags on.........but surely this is more than 80 years later ?
@sphinks92 because we live in an era where people's attention spans, hearts, social consciousnesses, & human intellects have been numbed & dumbed down beyond all understanding, to a mindblowing degree, seriously; Peej is so unique, and courageous, a light in the dark, but it's unbelievably dark i think (you know Rolling Stone gave this 3 stars, while bestowing 4 and a half on Lady Kaka's "Born this way":( If that's not a harbinger of the appocolypse, I don't know what is...
How wonderful to have these beautiful, evocative, sensitive films to accompany the songs. Like the album itself, they cast a spell that does not fade.
great song, sublime artist and album... don't now about having one person do all of the videos though, to be candid...they are good, interesting, but most not worth further viewing, not that I watch videos anyhow, but more of her performing, for example....
anyhow, not a lot to do with the lyrics anyhow to make it worth repeated views, all about the listening...
@Gui07 I think the big event tomorrow answers that question. Related: I wonder why the princes (and princesses) in direct line of ascension don't become firefighters or taxidrivers or similar dangerous and often thankless careers.
@NiklasNydahl there should be three more vids...12 altogether for each of the 12 tracks on the album..I'm really looking forward to the vid for All And Everyone.
Deep congratulations, Ms Harvey. Few artists could boast to have such a flawless career, even more difficult nowadays. And it's been from the very begining, and it appears it will be a lasting thing. On my behalf, thank you very much, honestly, thanks.

Most depressing song ever. The video accompanies the lyrical themes wonderfully, but god -damn- if it isn't a tearjerker.
