did you make the neck out of pine?? Id like to make a neck just for fun not for professional guitars ( I have my ibanez for that lool) and dont want to spend money on wood cos I know Ill porbably mess up... would pine be a good idea?? also can you fit a pine neck on a guitar or will it buckle under the stress of the string tension,,,, thanks nice work, and awesome song choice!!!
@darrylportelli If it's just for fun, why not! maybe get a cheap truss rod though. Right now I'm using a scrap of mohagany from a woodshop project and its really fun. Just do it!
@camdevh There's several videos of making a truss rod here on YouTube. In short you have a long bracket slipped over the ends of a threaded bar. At least one end needs some sort of ratcheting head whether it's for an allen wrench or whatever. The other end is locked inside the neck forcing the bracket to bow or straighten as desired. If you don't force some bow in the neck your strings will hit multiple fret wires as you play. If that sounds too complex you can probably buy one for your build.
im planning on building an electric mini stratocaster ukulele ( solid body ) so the neck isnt gonna be long at all so do you think i would need a trust rod ?
This looks like a great way to make a prototype, so you don't ruin expensive hardwood due to a mistake. Of course I know it's a PT, but how does it sound being made of all pine? I would guess it doesn't have the sustain of a hardwood body, but I really like the idea. I built an SG copy about 25 years ago and ruined a couple pieces of really nice (& expensive) Black Walnut before I got it right. Lucky for me, I've got *lots* of pine just laying around my shop- thanks for the ideas bro- rock on!
@connberkshire; The sustain in this type of wood is not the same as mahohony or similar to that.. pine is good for prototyping and building neckjoints to know how to do it right.. pine is great for experiments .. :D

These 2 videos were pretty cool to watch bro. I wish I was a better carpenter just so I could do this as well. wow thats really great how you can build your own guitar, would really like to try it sometimes! i'm sure i can find someone near me who's in this kinda stuff.

sorry for been ignorant ,i am a custom hand made electric guitar maker,u r wasting your time bru,one cannot make a guitar out of pine, this is madness, who told u that u could make anguitar out of pine ,the neck will always warp as for tone,, nothing any nice try
@Aimstardom, If u are able to read u can see that this is only a prototype that does not need to work lika a good electric guitar.. normaly i use Mahogony when i build electric guitars. I have been in the business for more than 20 years and of course i know that its impossible to make a good electric guitar out of pine.
@HearGear 'Taint necessarily so! It's not impossible to make a good electric guitar out of pine. I don't know if you are familiar with the work of Alex Zachary of Zachary Guitars, but the guy is a genius and a true innovator in the use of non-traditional materials for guitar bodies. The original Zachary Z-1 was made from pine, much to the shock of tone wood snobs everywhere. Take a look at his web site and you may want to reconsider.
@HearGear I agree that necks should not be made of pine, but I have a strat body made out of pine. I bought it as an experiment, ended up being the greatest sounding and feeling guitar I've ever played. the guitar weighs less that 5 pounds too! Pine ftw!
I don't know but I have built two guitar body's out of pine. One with a set neck made out of mahogany and the other set neck (pine body) has a walnut neck. These two guitars not only sound awesome but they will out sustain any of my other 12 build's. I have only been building guitars for 4 years, but I have to disagree about pine not sounding good.
@HearGear There are some great telecasters made out of pine. The necks are maple but the bodies are pine. I think the first tele by Leo Fender was pine. Look up Arlo West and his Pinecasters.
@areswolf76 try using cherry a friend has a telecaster mad out of it and it sound like velvet a tone to die for gives most american made strats a run for their money
Actually, pine is a very good tonewood. It sounds great. The only drawback is it's soft, so it can't be used for a neck and you'll get dents and dings in a body made of pine more easily.
@techiins, That is not important, measure from the nut to the 12:th fret x2, and that will help u to know where the bridge should be placed. How many frets a guitar have its not important cus u allways have to measure to know the scale. or else u will not be able to tune your guitar and it will sounds like shit.
@techiins, all the information u need as a beginner on building guitars u can find on the internet, lots of things to learn before u start building...
I am building my own and it wont be as expensive as yours because I have an old guitar that i'm taking the neck and parts that I need of it, so i'm pretty much just making the body.
@BugarijaBBD, Yes... this is only a prototype and i had some plans to make the neck this way to see what i could do with it, lots of guitarbuilders build necks out of 4 pieces....
@brianwurst1234, To build a very good high quality guitar is very very $, i belive that its better to buy one.. but its fun to build and get it built the way u wanna have it.
Why have a separate 4 pieces for the neck, that won't resonate good. When building neck, it should always be a 1 piece of wood. Then just put the truss rod and the fretboard on top. And when using it over time with floyd rose abuse, the neck will warp over time.
pine for guitar bodies?? cheap shit. softwood will not work properly. will suck in more tone than it will resonate. gonna use pine? get more tone for cheaper by using plywood!! fair enough only a select few softwoods can be used. basswood as an example. has hardwood qualities to some degrees.
well i use sapele for the body and maple for the neck.
any hard dense hardwood will work for the fretboard (rosewood, wenge, maple, ebony etc...) and the same goes for the neck really. if you think about it, the neck has to withstand the tension of the guitars strings, as well as the force of the truss rod countering that. therefore it has to be a very strong material (NOT pine) pine is fine for bodies (any wood will work here) but isn't advised due to its softness and general lack of tone...
mainly bodies and necks aare made from as sead in previous posts. maple & mahogany. you can use Poplar, ash, Swamp Ash(considerably lighter than ash), Basswood, Alder, most popular given tonal quality's mahog and maple are best. to be honest. id say any type of hardwood can be used,. for fingerboards the main used are Maple, Ebony & Rosewood.
what's up with the pine? you should be working with a dense hardwood with a tight grain for the neck... i.e. maple, mahogany, etc. ...pine is none of these things.
again this looks like pine, A good wood is maple to use for the neck, but you are on the right track with the multiple piece neck, and also the fretboard looks quite nice!
I'm almost sure this neck will be warped like hell. You should never build necks from flat-sawn wood with knots! In addition, the wood itself looks like some softwood, and that's also bad.
I'm afraid that you still have to learn many things before you'll make a decent guitar. But don't give up! Buy some good books and read them, for example "Make your own electric guitar" by Melvyn Hiscock.
And btw, search this in YouTube: Witkowski Custom Guitars & Pickups - here's how the professional works.
hey im designing my own guitar. I have body design done, but i dont have the measurements of were the neck starts at the body and the measurements of the neck at the headstock.can u help me out,oh ya i dnt no much about guitars
Ok, i would suggest that if you dont have a guitars of your own. That you go to the nearest guitar store to you and look at the style you want and ask if you can measure. Oh and never forget!!!! The length from the bridge to the 12 fret and the 12 fret to the nut has to be the same!!! If you need any more help on your guitar, finishing, shaping, where to buy items online for your guitar. You can ask me! REMEMBER: Do all your research! Check out the videos from Guitwild.
@guitcrzy: "The length from the bridge to the 12 fret and the 12 fret to the nut has to be the same" - that's not true. There is a thing called compensation: because of strings being not infinitely thin you have to move away the bridge by a small amount (not more then a few milimeters).
if you check out guitwild's videos he shows a diagram of his guitar. on one of his videos and he states himself that it has to be the same, otherwise the intonation would be all wrong.
Heh, we forgot to say what we mean by the word "brigde": position of saddle or something else, like front line of bridge for example?
Nevertheless, in case of a guitar with a non-adjustable bridge (acuostic guitar, for example), the distances between nut and 12th fret and between 12th fret and bridge (bridge here means the saddle) should not be the same, because of compensation.
google image "guitar templates" or "guitar building plans" or anything to that effect and youll hit a bunch of plans. that should help you settle the distances and measurements
talent is developed. the best luthier in the world didn't know his ass from his elbows when it came to guitars at one point.......dont let a lack of talent stop you from anything.......

I am building my own and it wont be as expensive as yours because I have an old guitar that i'm taking the neck and parts that I need of it, so i'm pretty much just making the body.
JonathanThomasVezina 1 year ago
@BugarijaBBD, Yes... this is only a prototype and i had some plans to make the neck this way to see what i could do with it, lots of guitarbuilders build necks out of 4 pieces....
HearGear 1 year ago
Honestly, is it cheaper to build one yourself or buy one? It looks good so far I'm watching them all.
brianwurst1234 1 year ago
@brianwurst1234, To build a very good high quality guitar is very very $, i belive that its better to buy one.. but its fun to build and get it built the way u wanna have it.
HearGear 1 year ago
Why have a separate 4 pieces for the neck, that won't resonate good. When building neck, it should always be a 1 piece of wood. Then just put the truss rod and the fretboard on top. And when using it over time with floyd rose abuse, the neck will warp over time.

Amazing!

pine for guitar bodies?? cheap shit. softwood will not work properly. will suck in more tone than it will resonate. gonna use pine? get more tone for cheaper by using plywood!! fair enough only a select few softwoods can be used. basswood as an example. has hardwood qualities to some degrees.

what is the best Wood for a Building my eletric guitar?
marcolinocabal 2 years ago
mahogany, rose wood or maple would do it. Could be done with others, but it's not suggested
EvenL33tland 2 years ago
well i use sapele for the body and maple for the neck.
any hard dense hardwood will work for the fretboard (rosewood, wenge, maple, ebony etc...) and the same goes for the neck really. if you think about it, the neck has to withstand the tension of the guitars strings, as well as the force of the truss rod countering that. therefore it has to be a very strong material (NOT pine) pine is fine for bodies (any wood will work here) but isn't advised due to its softness and general lack of tone...
splitty456 2 years ago
@marcolinocabal
mainly bodies and necks aare made from as sead in previous posts. maple & mahogany. you can use Poplar, ash, Swamp Ash(considerably lighter than ash), Basswood, Alder, most popular given tonal quality's mahog and maple are best. to be honest. id say any type of hardwood can be used,. for fingerboards the main used are Maple, Ebony & Rosewood.
MrGrumpyGinger 2 years ago
what's up with the pine? you should be working with a dense hardwood with a tight grain for the neck... i.e. maple, mahogany, etc. ...pine is none of these things.
:-/

again this looks like pine, A good wood is maple to use for the neck, but you are on the right track with the multiple piece neck, and also the fretboard looks quite nice!
ScienceRyan 2 years ago

XRuInGoDX15 2 years ago

There is a thing called compensation: because of strings being not infinitely thin you have to move away the bridge by a small amount (not more then a few milimeters).
hiperboloida 2 years ago
if you check out guitwild's videos he shows a diagram of his guitar. on one of his videos and he states himself that it has to be the same, otherwise the intonation would be all wrong.
guitcrzy 2 years ago
Heh, we forgot to say what we mean by the word "brigde": position of saddle or something else, like front line of bridge for example?
Nevertheless, in case of a guitar with a non-adjustable bridge (acuostic guitar, for example), the distances between nut and 12th fret and between 12th fret and bridge (bridge here means the saddle) should not be the same, because of compensation.
It's hard to explain without pictures...
Could you give a link to that video, btw?
hiperboloida 2 years ago
The man talking in the video does not say anything about it but he shows a diagram.
guitcrzy 2 years ago
Guitwild has quite a few videos and i simply don't have time to search all of them to find this diagram. That's why i ask for the link or the title.
hiperboloida 2 years ago
google image "guitar templates" or "guitar building plans" or anything to that effect and youll hit a bunch of plans. that should help you settle the distances and measurements

cornflakesnwater 2 years ago
The angle on this headstock is the same as the angle of a Gibson Les Paul.
HearGear 2 years ago

try a kit! :D

talent is developed. the best luthier in the world didn't know his ass from his elbows when it came to guitars at one point.......dont let a lack of talent stop you from anything.......

That looks like a ton of work...how long did that take? Making a body isn't that horrible (un-carved) but the neck scares me!!!
MrVerius 2 years ago
I can tell u that a neck is not that easy to build, to build a neck that looks good it will take about 2 days up to a week...
