  • did you make the neck out of pine?? Id like to make a neck just for fun not for professional guitars ( I have my ibanez for that lool) and dont want to spend money on wood cos I know Ill porbably mess up... would pine be a good idea?? also can you fit a pine neck on a guitar or will it buckle under the stress of the string tension,,,, thanks nice work, and awesome song choice!!!

  • @darrylportelli If it's just for fun, why not! maybe get a cheap truss rod though. Right now I'm using a scrap of mohagany from a woodshop project and its really fun. Just do it!

  • heyy how did u round the back of the neck?

  • @msbj10; Files and woodcarving tools.

  • @HearGear so it all was by hand? lol that makes the guitar more expensive

  • @msbj10; yes its all built by hand.

  • Snälla ge mig måtten på halsens längd!

  • @KissFan1997 och hur tjock/bred varje sån där träbit är innan du sätter ihop dem!

  • that little jig you made for the fretboard radius is genius although stewmac does sell stuff for making fretboards that looks like it works well

  • @cmzangetsu1993; this jig only cost me about a few nickles to make..and it works great.

  • @HearGear Hey for making two peice necks , Do you know where I can get a job to rout a straight truss rod channel?

  • @MicroSBs; The first thing u need to do before u shape the neck is to route the cavity for the truss rod, so u have a straight line to work from...

  • @HearGear Well I know that, Im just saying where can I get a jig to do the channel.

  • @MicroSBs; U dont need a jig, but if u do u have to build it ...

  • it`s almost complete!

  • @TheAlesoord just kidding but this video is rocking out!

  • do you have to use a truss rod? how do you make a steel reinforced neck?

  • @camdevh There's several videos of making a truss rod here on YouTube. In short you have a long bracket slipped over the ends of a threaded bar. At least one end needs some sort of ratcheting head whether it's for an allen wrench or whatever. The other end is locked inside the neck forcing the bracket to bow or straighten as desired. If you don't force some bow in the neck your strings will hit multiple fret wires as you play. If that sounds too complex you can probably buy one for your build.

  • What music play?

  • Norsk?

  • im planning on building an electric mini stratocaster ukulele ( solid body ) so the neck isnt gonna be long at all so do you think i would need a trust rod ?

owh and how did you make you frets ?

  • I really like your method for adding the curve to the fretboard, great video

  • This looks like a great way to make a prototype, so you don't ruin expensive hardwood due to a mistake. Of course I know it's a PT, but how does it sound being made of all pine? I would guess it doesn't have the sustain of a hardwood body, but I really like the idea. I built an SG copy about 25 years ago and ruined a couple pieces of really nice (& expensive) Black Walnut before I got it right. Lucky for me, I've got *lots* of pine just laying around my shop- thanks for the ideas bro- rock on!

  • @connberkshire; The sustain in this type of wood is not the same as mahohony or similar to that.. pine is good for prototyping and building neckjoints to know how to do it right.. pine is great for experiments .. :D

  • @HearGear

I have 1 piece of wood thats thick enough for a neck, can I just saw it into shape and use that instead of using4-5 pieces of wood?

so I take my block, saw it into shape, and just put frets on it instead of having a fretboard, then just shape the headstock and BOOM.?

I know about the trussrod, but I cant figure out where I can put it?

  • where can i get a trust rod?

  • @MegaHellcat666; stewmac.com

  • @HearGear you can get everything on stewmac

  • why did u choose a epiphone LP/SG style headstock?

  • Hi, I say first ; Good Work ! , Thats BEST Video on YouTube about "Building Guitar" :)

And I have some questions .. Have You any Guide Fo Neck Building? i Must Build 42mm Nut 24fret Neck/Fingerboard but i dont know nothing about Neck Build :(

And How i get this Thrus Rod ?

    Thanks for Video :)

  • @MrByniss; First of all, build a guitarneck is NOT easy, if u have never done it before u will have to build 3-5 of them before u will get one that is good and usable, after u have built a few u will get a hang of what its all about and your questions will also be answered by your self. :D:D i belive i did build at least 5 necks before i had one that i could use on a guitar...

  • @HearGear thank you for answer.. i understand you. i will start this weekend building some Guitar Cases and Necks FOR HOBBY and maybe, when i learn building guitar , i will make to myself ... Just i need soma Hand Habit :))

    Sorry For Bad English

  • do you pitch the neck angle from the body at the 2-4 degree angle? I am buidling a V and can't seem to figure out how Gibson does that without a milling machine.

  • @BetterThanEddy; Hello.. yes i did a angle of 4 egree, u need a router/milling machine to do that.

  • thats takes time and skill

  • Nice work, mate, thanks for the vid!

    I see you're using a Hultafors knife!

Swedish steel for a sweedish builder, eh? ;))

  • WOW!

That sanding block Idea was brilliant! I would not have thought of that, and it is kind of all in one, because you could adjust it to any radius you want, GREAT MAN!

  • excellent work.made a pine tele body before an it sounds great -i also was told by "a pro" that pine was unusable - never made a neck though -im gonna steal your ideas!

  • You're a real craftsman dude....

  • Hit hanks you nice job! I decided to make an electric guitar! But I really don’t know how should I make a correct dimensions for example for neck and fret board ?for example do we have a kind of ruller fir frets? Here in my country we can now find rosewood! So I don’t know how should I exchange it and exactly how should I install rod for neck. I do see all movies in YouTube and really they are useful but it can’t be free of problem for me . But I decided to do this. How do u think? Thanks

  • These 2 videos were pretty cool to watch bro. I wish I was a better carpenter just so I could do this as well. When it comes to setting up an already built guitar I'm second to none, but I'd love to have the ability to actually build one. Just so I can play shows with this nasty looking, and sounding guitar and have ppl be like, yo where you get that. And say, "Made it..." lol. Maybe someday when I have the luxury of time I will experiment with it. Btw, was there a 3rd vid? Dont see it.

  • Ember, testet fenyőféléből... meg nyakat is???

Ritka focsi lehet a végeredmény, hiába teszel bele EMG-t akkor sem lesz a hangja egy klasszis...

  • wow thats really great how you can build your own guitar, would really like to try it sometimes! i'm sure i can find someone near me who's in this kinda stuff.

  • how do u make the truss rod??? :(

  • wouldn't it be a lot easir to make the neck from one solid piece of wood than cutting several pieces to glue and clamp together? i'm interested in building my own guitar and my uncle has a mill shop with planer/jointers all the tools i will need for it...but the neck needs to be multiple pieces of wood?

  • N1 m8 :)

  • hey, i hate the same fretboard on my stagg F300 :D

  • Ingenius radius block. lol, not precise, but it gets the job done.

  • i must say this is one of the best vids on youtube for neck building, that i've seen.

  • Byggmax FTW :D

  • whats the fingerboard made out of?

  • dude, you are the first of this online community to know that Me and My Boys, we gonna make a Explorer guitar, non branded we think, and we got tools, great vid....but one thing i didn't understand is WHY DO YOU NEED 3 WOOD PIECES FOR THE BODY MAKING

  • what is this song? is it a satriani song?

  • why did you choose this construction method for the neck over a scarf joint? I'm debating trying this method on my next build, but i'm too backed up with customer builds to try it for a while.

  • i'm going to be building my own guitar as soon as i can get the materials. no matter how it turns out i can't get it off my m ind and i have to try lol. so i was wondering where i could get some of the tools i'd need? (i can use the table saw, band saw, chop saw, drill press, and planer in teh shop at my school) but as for cutting the slots for teh frets and such i don't have any saw with that fine of teeth so i was just wondering if you could give me some help? i'd really apreciate it

  • @iwannacapo He used a coping saw there must be one in your school

  • @Dara6611 there is but its old, its fine i decided to get a pre sloted fretboard

  • what is this song?

  • did you took of the fret board from another guitar?

  • I know this is a prototype... but would you still build the real guitar with a trussrod in the middle of seem??? could that cause problems down the road with it spliting???

  • nice inlays

  • whyd you make the neck from so many peices? i dont know much about making guitars haha sorry

  • whered u get the sweet fingerboard?

  • sorry for been ignorant ,i am a custom hand made electric guitar maker,u r wasting your time bru,one cannot make a guitar out of pine, this is madness, who told u that u could make anguitar out of pine ,the neck will always warp as for tone,, nothing any nice try

  • @Aimstardom, If u are able to read u can see that this is only a prototype that does not need to work lika a good electric guitar.. normaly i use Mahogony when i build electric guitars. I have been in the business for more than 20 years and of course i know that its impossible to make a good electric guitar out of pine.

  • @HearGear 'Taint necessarily so! It's not impossible to make a good electric guitar out of pine. I don't know if you are familiar with the work of Alex Zachary of Zachary Guitars, but the guy is a genius and a true innovator in the use of non-traditional materials for guitar bodies. The original Zachary Z-1 was made from pine, much to the shock of tone wood snobs everywhere. Take a look at his web site and you may want to reconsider.

  • @HearGear I agree that necks should not be made of pine, but I have a strat body made out of pine. I bought it as an experiment, ended up being the greatest sounding and feeling guitar I've ever played. the guitar weighs less that 5 pounds too! Pine ftw!

  • @HearGear this aimstardom is such a broken promise dude....SHUT THE FUCK UP...

  • @HearGear

I don't know but I have built two guitar body's out of pine. One with a set neck made out of mahogany and the other set neck (pine body) has a walnut neck. These two guitars not only sound awesome but they will out sustain any of my other 12 build's. I have only been building guitars for 4 years, but I have to disagree about pine not sounding good.

  • @HearGear There are some great telecasters made out of pine. The necks are maple but the bodies are pine. I think the first tele by Leo Fender was pine. Look up Arlo West and his Pinecasters.

  • @HearGear What are the best kind of woods to use, and what to avoid usin please??

  • @rhythm2007mc Mahogany is my first choice for wood. Great tone. Avoid using pine, necks warp and the tone is terrible.

  • @HearGear could the body be pine and the neck maple?

  • @HearGear Arlo West would like to have a word with you.

  • @Aimstardom I'm new trying to build guitars, and I don't know what kind of woods are best for sound and to work with?

  • @areswolf76 try using cherry a friend has a telecaster mad out of it and it sound like velvet a tone to die for gives most american made strats a run for their money

  • @Aimstardom madness???,this is sparta!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @Aimstardom he"s jus practicing :P :D

  • @Aimstardom

Actually, pine is a very good tonewood. It sounds great. The only drawback is it's soft, so it can't be used for a neck and you'll get dents and dings in a body made of pine more easily.

  • can u tell me how far away does the last fret of the neck to the brig have to be?

  • @techiins, That is not important, measure from the nut to the 12:th fret x2, and that will help u to know where the bridge should be placed. How many frets a guitar have its not important cus u allways have to measure to know the scale. or else u will not be able to tune your guitar and it will sounds like shit.

  • @HearGear so its roughly around 8 cm?

  • @techiins, No... the scale of most Gibson Explorer is 628mm, so from the nut to the bridge it should be 628mm.

  • @HearGear so its 62.8 cm?

  • @techiins, all the information u need as a beginner on building guitars u can find on the internet, lots of things to learn before u start building...

  • @HearGear oh ok thanks alot but where do you get your supplies from?

  • @techiins, u mean hardware... ?

  • @HearGear no um i mean parts of the eletricl guitar n thx for all the help so far

  • hej!

  • what type of tool did you use to shape the back of the neck?

  • I am building my own and it wont be as expensive as yours because I have an old guitar that i'm taking the neck and parts that I need of it, so i'm pretty much just making the body.

  • @BugarijaBBD, Yes... this is only a prototype and i had some plans to make the neck this way to see what i could do with it, lots of guitarbuilders build necks out of 4 pieces....

  • Honestly, is it cheaper to build one yourself or buy one? It looks good so far I'm watching them all.

  • @brianwurst1234, To build a very good high quality guitar is very very $, i belive that its better to buy one.. but its fun to build and get it built the way u wanna have it.

  • Why have a separate 4 pieces for the neck, that won't resonate good. When building neck, it should always be a 1 piece of wood. Then just put the truss rod and the fretboard on top. And when using it over time with floyd rose abuse, the neck will warp over time.

  • Amazing!

  • pine for guitar bodies?? cheap shit. softwood will not work properly. will suck in more tone than it will resonate. gonna use pine? get more tone for cheaper by using plywood!! fair enough only a select few softwoods can be used. basswood as an example. has hardwood qualities to some degrees.

  • what is the best Wood for a Building my eletric guitar?

  • mahogany, rose wood or maple would do it. Could be done with others, but it's not suggested

  • well i use sapele for the body and maple for the neck.

any hard dense hardwood will work for the fretboard (rosewood, wenge, maple, ebony etc...) and the same goes for the neck really. if you think about it, the neck has to withstand the tension of the guitars strings, as well as the force of the truss rod countering that. therefore it has to be a very strong material (NOT pine) pine is fine for bodies (any wood will work here) but isn't advised due to its softness and general lack of tone...

  • @marcolinocabal

mainly bodies and necks aare made from as sead in previous posts. maple & mahogany. you can use Poplar, ash, Swamp Ash(considerably lighter than ash), Basswood, Alder, most popular given tonal quality's mahog and maple are best. to be honest. id say any type of hardwood can be used,. for fingerboards the main used are Maple, Ebony & Rosewood.

  • what's up with the pine? you should be working with a dense hardwood with a tight grain for the neck... i.e. maple, mahogany, etc. ...pine is none of these things.

    :-/

  • again this looks like pine, A good wood is maple to use for the neck, but you are on the right track with the multiple piece neck, and also the fretboard looks quite nice!

  • I'm almost sure this neck will be warped like hell. You should never build necks from flat-sawn wood with knots! In addition, the wood itself looks like some softwood, and that's also bad.

I'm afraid that you still have to learn many things before you'll make a decent guitar. But don't give up! Buy some good books and read them, for example "Make your own electric guitar" by Melvyn Hiscock.

And btw, search this in YouTube: Witkowski Custom Guitars & Pickups - here's how the professional works.

  • You're absolutely right, but this is just a prototype.

  • @snailswigbee: Ok then, sorry :) I just looked at the title of the video.

  • hey im designing my own guitar. I have body design done, but i dont have the measurements of were the neck starts at the body and the measurements of the neck at the headstock.can u help me out,oh ya i dnt no much about guitars

  • Ok, i would suggest that if you dont have a guitars of your own. That you go to the nearest guitar store to you and look at the style you want and ask if you can measure. Oh and never forget!!!! The length from the bridge to the 12 fret and the 12 fret to the nut has to be the same!!! If you need any more help on your guitar, finishing, shaping, where to buy items online for your guitar. You can ask me! REMEMBER: Do all your research! Check out the videos from Guitwild.

    Guitcrzy

  • @guitcrzy: "The length from the bridge to the 12 fret and the 12 fret to the nut has to be the same" - that's not true. There is a thing called compensation: because of strings being not infinitely thin you have to move away the bridge by a small amount (not more then a few milimeters).

  • if you check out guitwild's videos he shows a diagram of his guitar. on one of his videos and he states himself that it has to be the same, otherwise the intonation would be all wrong.

  • Heh, we forgot to say what we mean by the word "brigde": position of saddle or something else, like front line of bridge for example?

Nevertheless, in case of a guitar with a non-adjustable bridge (acuostic guitar, for example), the distances between nut and 12th fret and between 12th fret and bridge (bridge here means the saddle) should not be the same, because of compensation.

It's hard to explain without pictures...

Could you give a link to that video, btw?

  • The man talking in the video does not say anything about it but he shows a diagram.

  • Guitwild has quite a few videos and i simply don't have time to search all of them to find this diagram. That's why i ask for the link or the title.

  • google image "guitar templates" or "guitar building plans" or anything to that effect and youll hit a bunch of plans. that should help you settle the distances and measurements

  • thats awesome..what is the angle on your head stock???

  • The angle on this headstock is the same as the angle of a Gibson Les Paul.

  • @cornflakesnwater i believe its like 13 degrees

  • man xD

i want to build a guitar but i don´t have the talent to do it and neither the money xD

  • try a kit! :D

  • talent is developed. the best luthier in the world didn't know his ass from his elbows when it came to guitars at one point.......dont let a lack of talent stop you from anything.......

  • That looks like a ton of work...how long did that take? Making a body isn't that horrible (un-carved) but the neck scares me!!!

  • I can tell u that a neck is not that easy to build, to build a neck that looks good it will take about 2 days up to a week...
