  • I think the dislikes are from people who don't watch until the Living End parts start..

  • GREAT TONE BRO!!!

  • Sounds awesome. Thinking about getting one of these and doing the same! Btw, what song is 2:50?

  • I need to state something that needs to be said, after reasing comment here from a year ago. The gretsch sound from AC/DC, is very, very clean. Malcolm young is the cleanest rhythm guitarist in the rock n roll business.

  • living end!!!

  • thanks for not playing that rockability bullshit!

  • So whats the deal? Are more expensive Gretsch guitars made with these pickups? but the cheaper ones come with Gretsch made pickups or somethin? are these TV Jones pickups expensive? AND is there really any difference? can't really tell. I'm looking into buying a gretsch which is why i ask..

  • nice play

  • Great job putting the guitar and pickups through their paces.

  • Is it me or do ya have a White Falcon pickguard on your Gretsch?

  • @SeaDollarsBertram It's you haha, it's a 6120 signpost pickguard.

  • guys (and gals), remember the nickname for the pickups which come standard with the 5120... "mudbuckers". the TV Jones pickups ARE worth it for the sound difference. 'tis a no-brainer upgrade and will make a 5120 into a performance-level guitar no prob.

  • @nhojcam honestly dude, the stock pickups are not bad at all. i literally have a pair of TV Classics sitting on my desk to be installed... and the way my stock pickups sound i'm almost afraid to change them.

NOW: 2 admissions... 1, i've not heard the tv classics yet & they may blow the gretschbuckers away..

and 2, i'm playing through a pair of hand wired vox ac15s :-x

  • any tips on installing these in a g5120 was it difficult drilling in the new holes

  • @MrBavelaar You can certainly get some good overdriven tones from the stock pickups, but they lack a bit of the clarity and brightness you would find in higher end Gretsch guitars. These pickups help bridge that gap, but this guitar still doesn't exactly match a 6120.

  • Just got my first Gretsch after over 40 years of playing, and can now say that this plus a Les Paul are all I'll ever need!

  • did you install these your self

  • @batmobile1989 Yes I did. Took me a couple hours cause I had to get them to fit properly, but it was well worth it.

  • @pattyww was it a pain in the arse?...it kinda looks like it...can you tell a big difference between the stock and the tvs?...I am thinking about making the leap....

  • sweet sounds and playing man, I just swapped out the stocks for TV Classics and I've set them as recommended but don't you find that you end up pushing the 6th string onto the pole piece of the bridge pup a bit when your playing gets aggressive sometimes ? The strings are really close to the pole pieces , maybe I did something wrong ? I set the bridge pup @ 5/32 with open strings

  • Love all of the Living End riffs man!

  • The living end is the shit :).

  • Love the Cool sounds and Playing c];-)

  • is that with no amp???

    PLEASE HELP!

I am wanting to buy either gretsch g5120 or g100ce. i am mostly an acoustic player, as in i dont even own an amp. hence i guess im looking for something with better unplugged sound. which would you recommend???

  • what were you playing from 2:02-2:12?

  • Yeah I think we all appreciate that you showed the potential that this great instrument and pickups can do. You had a little bit of everything from rockabilly and harder rock styles! Love the crunch it has and definitely a great instrument!

  • This and a les paul junior. my perfect 2 piece arsenal

  • TLE is awesome!!!!!

  • thats the tone i love beautiful, long live filtertrons i love them,

  • Comment removed

  • Nice vid. Its nice to see a guitar demo where different styles are used.

  • @sacs1800

yeahh haha i find it impossible to find a gretsch video without someone playing sleepwalk or rockabilly on it. These guitar are so nice i dont like it when people short change it and only play a certain style on it.

  • 0:45 living end! two living end songs in a row

  • Did the original pickguard fit with the new TV Jones?

  • The Living End!!!! Very nice! :DDD

  • no way. this was 20 times more awesome than i expected.

  • @Teddius1138 Thanks!

  • what are you playing at 1:16?

  • @goalieblues all torn down, the living end

  • Is this guitar good for blues?

  • Did you switch the pick guard as well?

  • Long live The Living End

  • I'm thinking on either buying the G5120 a Fender Jaguar HH. It's tough, but I think I may settle for this. I'm not sure yet though

  • Wow what a great improvement on the stock pick-ups! I think the stock P/U are too muddy. Did you notice a big difference with these new pick-ups? Also what TV P/U did you buy? Are they just called TV classic's? By the way nice playing!

    Big Fat Steve

  • is this a electric semi acoustic guitar tell me? Please

  • @Thegodfather1233 It's a hollow-body electric, it plays louder than solid bodies unplugged, but not as loud as an actual acoustic. It doesn't have the same sound as an acoustic plugged in.

  • this is an electric acoustic guitar right

  • dude what pedals u used?

  • @Holer182 Maxon OD-9 Overdrive and a Boss DD-3 Digital Delay.

  • @Holer182 you should think about getting a comp pedal...

  • west end riot sounds awesome!

  • Sounds damn good!!

  • I'm torn: I really do like the guitar, but I get the impression that it's really "niche-y", in the sense that it's really only good for country stuff like bluegrass, etc. (the living end is basically just rockabilly mixed with pop punk) which is fine, except for the fact that I don't think that I'd play a lot of it. Could you maybe post a video showing some of the tonal possibilities?

  • The first chord progression was Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi. I'm assuming it's just coincidence though :P

  • @RobinsonBluesMan Yeah it is a coincidence, I made the video in 2008 and I just wikied that song and it came out in '09. Good ear though.

  • wow. nice. no amp?! straight to laptop?

  • @zannpaci Yep, I wish I had a good mic and could give a real representation of the live sounds, but unfortunately I don't. The laptop did the job though.

  • What's the little ditty at 1:31?

  • @the4fter8irthisgr0ss its second solution - the living end ( i.e the best band in the world)

  • @the4fter8irthisgr0ss its second solution by living end.

  • @the4fter8irthisgr0ss Second Solution by The Living End

  • does this have a solid block down the middle or is it all hollow?

  • @Parley454 It's mostly hollow, with some supports.

  • Great playing and sound!Bravo!!!I am saving up for the tv's.Hope my 5120 will sound like yours!

    Dimitris from Greece

  • @dimszappas Thanks

  • Sounds really awesome. Great playing too!

  • @Imasofat Thanks Gary, new beer reviews soon?

  • what setting are you using at 2:00 I love that sound and I want to be able to do it on my Gretsch

  • Maxon OD-9 Overdrive, with the drive turned all the way down, then a Boss DD-3 Digital Delay on a slapback setting, into a clean amp.

  • @pattyww is that the original bridge that is on there ? I couldn't really tell. I have a 5120 and I LOVE The guitar but i would really like to get a different bridge. Thanks

  • You lost me after :15, and at 1:32 the sound got even worse (didn't know that was possible). At 2:00 it seemed better, but then immediately went bad again.

Were this a TVJ demo, based on this, I certainly wouldn't want to purchase. Definitely not what I think of when GRETSCH is mentioned.

  • @636117 Thanks for watching!

  • @636117 seems you have a pretty narrow-minded idea about how Gretsches are supposed to sound. Ever listen to AC/DC? Half of that's a Gretsch! Or Who's Next? Gretsch again!

  • @krettere I DON'T listen to AC/DC, nor The Who.

Pure noise. Gretsch is known for their CLEAN SOUND.

    THAT'S the Great Gretsch Sound.

  • @636117 maybe you should listen to some early Jesus and Mary Chain then. Nice Scottish lads with Gretsches and Twin Reverbs.

  • @krettere exactly. i have a gretsch and the tone and versatility is far supirior to my les paul

  • @krettere The New York Dolls!

  • @krettere Jesus and mary chain, the cure and stone roses use(d) gretches too. And killing joke with the gibson es295. "Rockabilly guitars" can do a lot more than rocabilly.

    Great demo, thx

  • What do you think about changing the original pickups to TV Magna'trons instead of TV Classic pickups? I have a G5125.

  • @zkoszegi1 From what I've heard, Magna's are awesome. If you want a bit more twang and single coil character, go for it!

  • @zkoszegi1 I have a G5125 as well and would be interested to hear how you like your magna's if you put them in. Or better yet put up a video. Thanks!

  • 5120's are great ! I wanted to put in sme TV Jones as well, but after doing some adjustments on the Gretsch pickups it sounds great to me. It really made a difference to adjust the height of the pickupbody & poles. Comes damn close to the 6120 in my opinion.

  • COOl Just wanted to ask what pick ups your using i know there the tv jones classic but which ones and if you bought them from the tv jones website

  • Played one in Guitar Center. Great guitar! Doesn't have too much distortion to it, but it's a great Rockabilly/Country guitar! Love it! I'll probably buy it.

  • Great guitar! Which TV Jones pickups did you use - did you go for the TV classic plus in the bridge or stick with the standard classic bridge? Also did you upgrade anything else (aside from the pickguard) like the bigsby, wiring harness, machine heads etc?

  • hey party pat. Living end sucks LoLOlOL

  • TLE>>>>>Anything you listen to....

    P.S. You have AIDS.

  • Hey man! Great sound! What kind of distortion you use? Maybe a pedal? Thx....

  • Maxon OD-9 Overdrive

  • I also did the upgrade on my 5122DC and what a difference....i love it now with the pick-ups!! Same sound!!

    Living end rules!!

  • tanks

  • tone monster

  • YES! MORE VIDEOS! MORE VIDEOS!

  • Wow! I've never imagined that a Gretsch could sound like that! How much of a difference would you say the new pups do?

    Thanks.

  • Well worth the money...

  • Do the pickups stop that horrible electromatic feeback? And would you say your sound comes trough a live mix better? i'm considering doing the same. thanks

  • My G5120 is pretty good as far as feedback... So it's hard to tell. As far as the live mix, I haven't played live in a while and I didn't own this guitar back when I did, but the clarity of these pickups are phenomenal...

  • its awesome! you play so well, and the sound is as good as the original riffs... I dont know if you use a program like cubase but it sound perfect.

  • I used Adobe Audition..

  • what do you think about a electomatic with upgraded pickups???

    I am POOR

  • It's pretty awesome...

  • Whoa, That bridge pup tone is absolutely KILLER!!! You got some awesome tone there, and ya sold me on which pup to slap in my chambered body git-fiddle bridge pos. Thanx, Rock-on!

  • Hello,

to mount the tv jones must also change the frames?

  • tana libera tutti!!! ;)

  • that sounds gretsch ... i mean great ^^

please what is the name of the song played at 1:32 ? it rocks and i would like to learn it !

  • its "second solution" by The living end. and yeah. it rocks haha

  • Nice vid and feedback on how you modified the guitar. Thanks for posting. I want to do the same. Did you replace the mounting shims with mouse pad material and mount the TV jones pickups by screwing it into the material. (Like it shows in the tech vid at the TV Jones website)? Is that how you get around the problem with the screw alignment for the new pickups not matching the existing holes? Or were you able to drill new holes with out making one big hole?

  • Due to the mounting of the stock pickups, there aren't any mounting shims.... The EM-2 is designed so that the pickup is suspended under the pickup rings by two screws that screw into little feet that have been added on the pickup. Because of this, I had to widen the cavity. The new holes in the top of the guitar are to house the traditional filtertron pickup rings.

  • What type of amp are you using, Cuz it really has a living end sound to it.

  • Its a model of a Roland JC-120 (Chris Cheney used one way back in the day). I'm plugged into my computer and running Line 6 Gearbox. I also use a Maxon OD-9 for drive.

  • I did the same thing - those original pickups were dogshit - I used EM2 TV Jones - where'd uou get the new pickguard?

  • Holy crap thanks allot for playing the living end!

  • what amp are you using?

  • hey man nice vid!..i have the same guitar there...i wanted to ask what kind of pickguard model i can put on mine... cuase i wnna change it... ?

  • Hey Patty,

Thanks for the advice. How did you pin the floating bridge in place, Glue, double stick tape? Any other way?

    Thanks in advance...

PS. What amp did you use in the video?

  • Double-sided tape...

Amp is the Line 6 Gearbox software's Roland JC-120 model. I use a Maxon OD-9 for drive.

  • Hey.. I just bought a 5120 and would love to put the TV Jones pickups in it. Are they pop in replacements or do you have to do any modifications to the guitar to make them fit?

    Thank you!!!.. You sound great!

  • You need to order the TV Jones in either the EM-2 English Mount (like I have) or in the TV Tron mount. With the English Mount you get the classic Filtertron look, but you have to put new holes in the top of the guitar and file or route the pickup cavity to make them fit. The TV Tron mount doesn't look nearly as good, but its a simpler modification.

  • Dude! I want TV jones on my 5120 too! Where the hell can I get ´em to a fair price?

  • If you live in Finland, you might want to try a TV Jones dealer, look on their website.

  • hey man, i have the same guitar and i think you've convinced me to change the stock pick ups to tv jones, what was the cost of the mod, nice riffs there too man, love the living end!

  • In total: 2 TV Classics, Wiring Harness, Switch Tip, New Pickgaurd (Bought Separately), Shipping and International Fees = about $600 CAD. The International Fees were the killer, I paid about $110 just to have them brought into the country... I wish I had known before.

  • Comment removed

  • Total price with the mod? nicely done btw!

  • Everything came to about $600 CAD. Pickups, Wiring Harness, New Pickguard, Fees.

  • Nice Sound!

  • i like the sound but i dont like the collor of your guitar..(i think its ugly..)

  • Orange is the classic colour of the original 6120's, most Gretsch players don't seem to mind it at all.

  • oh that´s it, i´m not a Gretsch player(i play a fender jaguar HH special) but i want 1, i'm thinking of this guitar in white with black harware

  • for true gretsch addicts a 5120 or 6120 must be orange like the cochran guitar, setzer guitar, harrison guitar, Atkins guitar and all of the others artist who have popularised this gem.

  • this video doesn't do the guitar justice, i have the same model and the wood grain coming through is very very nice :)

  • This sounds fantastic mate! What model Tv jones pickups are they?

  • TV Classics

  • DUUDEE

    that was sik

  • Mmmmmm sweet tones!!! I like it very much!

  • I've got this guitar to, i think you have the ultimate gretsch sound. I like the sound with an acoustic modulator very much. But i really like the living end songs you've played! i'm gonna see them friday in Amsterdam :D But great playing, keep rockin!

  • i'm sorry i'm not into the rockability stuff I was always a les paul player but man near the end of the vid with the gain up a bit that was some of the best tone i've ever heard. How much gain can the tv jones handle?

  • also are they both the standard tv jones classic or do you have 1 of them as the classic plus?

  • Both are standard TV Classics...

  • Love the bridge pup on clean. Was thinking of getting one, was wondering about the floating bridge. Its one of the only things putting me off at the moment

  • Did you have to mess with the height of the classics? I have the 5120 as well and want to swap in the tv jones as well. I just sold my setzer hot rod with the same p/u's in it like an idiot....if I can add the locking tuners i can get fairly close to the same guitar

  • I fitted them to the height TV Jones recommends on the website. Not sure off the top of my head...

  • Very nice ! *****

  • omg i want to play music with you lol

  • Get your ass over to Canada...

  • lol no you get your ass over to australia lol. Hey you should do a cover of how do we know. Do you have an octave pedal?

  • Someday, I will be in Australia....

Funny that you mention How Do We Know, because I have been planning on doing in for a long time and have never gotten around to it. I do have an octave pedal, its not very good, but it should work for HDWK. I just need time to do it...

  • Yeah its a killer song.

  • sounds sweet!cant wait to finish my guitar and plug these into it.they seem to handle drive real well.

  • nice gretch! my grampa has the white falcon hese one of the best

  • Shut your dick mouth, trainmaster. He did it to show us how badass it sounds, and for the record, his playing was damn good. What the hell does the speed of chord changes have anything to do with his demonstration? Answer that question and maybe grow the hell up while you're at it, you elitist prick.

  • Kick ass Living End playing

  • I have been considering modding my g5120 for the last several months but I really don't know where to start. I know I want to change the pickups but from what you've seen with yours what else do you recommend or have you already done to your gretsch? I'm thinking changing the tuners as well... Great vid.

  • I have a question, how did u get that rockabilly sound at around 2:20? Is it just delay?

  • Slight bit of overdrive, plus a bit of slapback delay...

  • Thanks :) Im soon getting a transparent overdrive to get that sound since the overdrive channel of my amp, even if at very low gain already gives too much distorted tone and make my 5120 sound crappy... GJ man, Long live rock 'n' roll

  • Those Tv jones pickups are just amazing.. they can really transform the 5120 into a 1000€ guitar...

  • SOOOLLLOOOO!!!!

  • You've got a GREAT sound going on here... my question is, what type overdrive/pedal are you using???

  • Maxon OD-9 Overdrive

  • that sounds smoking hot...im waiting to install a powertron bridge and a classic neck in a homemade custom, and i hope it sounds this good.thanks for the sample.

  • Hey if thats a G5120 than where'd you get the pick guard did you customize it your self?

  • I ordered a standard 6120 pickguard off the internet, then spaced the pickups accordingly, and drilled new holes so that it would fit.

  • what song is it 1:02-1:30 also this part to 0:43-1:00?? it would be awesome if you would tell me...sounds awesome...later on and keep jamming.

  • 1:02-1:30 is All Torn Down by The Living End, and 0:43-1:00 is Wake Up by The Living End.

  • What are you playing between 2:00 - 2:27? I recognize it but can't place it anywhere.

  • It starts out as just a finger picking pattern in E, then eventually goes to a Mystery Train-ish pattern.

  • Where did ya get the pick guard? Your guitar looks GREAT with the gold pick guard and mounting rings!

     Ed

  • What chords were you playing at 1:00?

  • Dbmin, eventually turns into Abmaj.

  • nevermind, i figur
