  • Hey Paul, having trouble with the mic? lol

  • My all time favorite band in the world. Hail Cynic.

  • that solo is sexy

  • absolutely incredible....

  • much better paul's voice ! man you are a GENIUS i love you !

  • This line-up is in fact more Portal than Cynic. The bassist here (Chris Kringel) was the original Portal bassist. He was about to record Focus but Paul and Sean decided to use Malone for the record and Chris for the tour + the next album feature him. That album was the portal demo and he kept working with them on Aeon Spoke.

Btw, Portal demo was done after Focus, but some songs were done around the same time.

  • Every time i hear him speak i picture Van Driessen (hippie teacher) from beavis and butt-head lol

  • Would be awesome if they play Circle and Endless Endeavours too. Sadly, the singer lady is busy with Hannah Montana.

  • @MightyGarogh it's really a waste of her voice... and a weird change of music style

  • 2 people flat out suck...

  • the only thing which i don't like is the robotic voice effect. he has such a nice voice and that effect kind of annoys me but they are great nonetheless

  • @lorand133 Focus like. A lot of fans are nostalgic about the Focus.

  • Most epic guitar solo of all time

  • Two people cant be amongst celestial beings

  • What album is this off of?? I can't seem to find it! :( HELP! I NEED MORE CYNIC!

  • @drumninmer34 It's a Portal song; Portal were formed after Cynic disbanded. They've only released one demo, but it's not hard to find on the Internet. On that note, I hope to GOD Cynic re-record some of those songs for their next album.

  • @toxicgospel They are going to release a remixed album of Focus along with their new album this summer:)

  • @drumninmer34 thats because it isn't by cynic, it's from a previous band some member of the band were in called portal

  • @ihatenatwolf Thanks man! \m/

  • @ihatenatwolf i thought post ment after?

  • Is there a reason why Sean hits the cymbals in the beginning with what it looks like his wrists. Is this to make it quieter than hitting a stick?

  • @JacobMinyard I think he's hitting the far edge of the cymbal with his sticks. no idea why

  • does anyone know the effect the lead guitarist uses in the intro?

or is it just the overdubbed recording! :S

  • @THEWRETCHEDCRYPT The clicks and synth pads are a recording. The effect on the guitar is commonly called a volume swell, which is achieved either via playing around with a volume pedal or automatically (kind of like an Auto-Wah). I'm pretty sure the guitarist here uses the latter method, which is achieved with pedals such as Boss SG-1 Slow Gear and Behringer SM200 Slow Motion (the latter being a blatant copy of the former, but the Boss one is discontinued anyway).

  • @THEWRETCHEDCRYPT I thinks the recording

  • Just so everyone knows, the Portal album was finally re-mastered and officially released in a limited "fans-only" edition and sold during their last tour.

    search it on discogs.

  • I've never gotten high, but this seems like a druggie's paradise. I feel high listening to it.

  • @walshy0001 you should!

  • pauls vocoder sounds fucked up

  • This band is incredible, unfortunatley this song isn't like anything off of Focus in regards to the heavier elements. This song is pure art, but i like to enjoy it while ripped out of my mind in the comfort of my own home.

  • @blackwaterdrowning this song+mushrooms

  • I'm not a huge fan of this band (maybe I will be eventually) but I have to say that's one of the worst audiences I've ever seen! Pathetic.

  • @adace1 Would you mosh to it? I would just stand there and cry like an emo boy.

  • @Supernikomaru think he is just saying the showup was poor

  • @adace1 How are they pathetic? their enjoying the pure music from this great band. You can exactly mosh to it. Or headbang. Thats not the point of cynic. Its creating and enjoying a piece of art.

  • Focus was and awesomw album, decades ahead of that time.

  • chant away, the cosmos grace...

  • Who is the only guy who don't like the video??????? lol

  • Just saw them tonight in St. Paul, phenomenal show. They played this tonight and I really liked it, but have never heard of Portal before. It was impressive how they can pull off all they do on the albums live perfectly, and even better in some instances.

  • I would very much enjoy to see that asshole live with tinnitus, I've had it for some months now, and it is one of the worst tortures that exists

  • @HappyMaskedThinker Nobody gives a shit if you've got tinnitus - It's your own fault for not protecting your ears when you play live, so deal with it. You're not Paul, and your not in a band that's as big as Cynic, so your opinion on good live musical practices aren't valid.

  • my favorite song from Focus. Veil of Maya is awesome too.

  • @vukstanovcic It's not from focus. Technically it's not even by Cynic, it's a song by portal (which has three members from the original Cynic anyway...)

  • @hollowXcadaver i know, but it's on the re-issue of Focus.

  • God that solo tone is amazing

  • yeah exactly fuck your ears. tinitus and being deaf for the win haha. grow up kid, you can say that because you haven't been next do a drum set or something so SHUT THE FUCK UP KID! why are they pussies for as you say yourself preserve the "MOST ESSENTIAL BODY ORGAN FOR MUSIC" where is the irony ?

  • this line up was oddly enough the Portal line up without the keyboard player

  • @actaylorr

    No Jason Gobel though :(

  • @actaylorr no the guitarist wasnt in portal

  • This is amazing but it's just not the same without the female singer.

  • 3:48 ahhh! speechless!

  • A great song for me to listen to when I wanna be relaxed and fall a sleep to.

  • Comment removed

  • Portal's best song on the album, along side of Circle, and Endless Endeavors

this solo makes me cry its so good

  • This song is fucking sick, it has such a mellow feel to it...has any one heard the studio version..if not you gotta listen!! i uploaded the song but fucking Youtube blocked..

  • studio version is great, so atmospheric.

  • this is my favorite band ...beacuse they are so diffenerent and talented ...hah paul looks lke jake genenhaul (idk) in this vid

  • bunu bir de albüm kayıtlarından dinleyin. aşığım ben bu şarkıya.

  • The solo at 3:49 sends shivers down my spine Excellent song!

  • been going into the cynic lyrics for some time now, "Gathering joyfully from the nether world

As I go through the portal's fold " wich is from the lyrics of cosmos. nether world, isnt that just another word for hell or world of the dead...from the info i gathered paul believes in budhism, didnt think budhism had any netherworld or hell, only rebirth..and eventually nirvana

  • Hes probably a gnostic.

  • the song obviously isnt about punishment or places of torture or whatever...

  • @fretlessbuddha I dunno man. He might be referring to the eternal Soul which dwells within every human being? The portal might represent yoga.

  • @fretlessbuddha Paul does not believe in Buddhism, believes in nothing, no hell.

  • @Leugim89 Im pretty certain masvidal is a buddhist or at least a spiritualist, definately not a materialist in any sense though

  • Smart dudes in Norway, actually wearing Earplugs.

  • Haha, yeah, they're such pussies for trying to preserve the one most essential body organ used for both enjoying music, and performing it. They're such wimps. All the cool tough guys become deaf by they reach age 50. Screw hearing properly.

    Fucking moron.

  • @XxSconeManxX dude please stop talkin shit. seriously who the fuck cares. im not replying back either just to piss you off lol.

  • @Jubert11

That comment was practically a year ago dipshit, get over it.

  • @XxSconeManxX truth bomb!!!!!

  • @XxSconeManxX What cool guys??

  • @XxSconeManxX its not preservation rather experimentation

  • wow, that is one beautifull guitar solo

they are all talented musician especially Paul.

btw i heard that their old bass player uses a fretless bass is that true?

  • yes, Cynic and Death were the first death metal bands to use fretless bass in their music or well, i'm preety sure they were the first

  • sadus man sadus

  • That is true.

  • heard? is that a joke?

his name is sean malone, just go check out their first album "Focus" or youtube it..... or google malone and find his bass and chapman stick work on his own site.

  • that's right and he(sean malone) is still on the new album with is fretless bass, but he doesn't make any concert, that is why this one doesn't play with a fretless bass. someone who understands me!^^ I've got the studio version of this song, it's my favourite guitar solo ever!

  • as far as i see kris(in this vid) is playing a fretless bass, hes only using fret marks:P

  • This song perfectly captures the feeling of looking into the sky at night. I don't know how they did it! Cynic rules!

  • i would give this statement four thumbs up at the very least. However, i am only allowed one. Could not agree with you anymore.

  • its too bad most people cant comprehend how amazing these musicians are

  • i bought the expanded edition cynic-focus cd, and this is on it

  • wow i liked the portal demo a lot but with Paul's vocals instead of the old vocalist i enjoy it so much more.

  • @focus727

what the hell are you talking about? Paul has ALWAYS been the vocalist.

  • by far my favorite song by them

  • Portal has multiple albums?

  • What? no.

  • Portal only recorded one demo around 1995.

  • Nope.

Their demo wasn't officially released and they never performed live.

  • I dont have MSN!!! will hotmail take the file size?

  • Probably yeah. PM me your email. Why did people give me a thumbs down? You know you can't buy it people, and the cyniconline website gave the demo to me for free. So go ahead. Give me a thumbs down.

  • @Megadedly yes megadeth and cynic, thats all you need

  • I just learned Endless Endeavors. I love playing it.

  • "Divine mother

Free my mind from all obstacles of delusion

And lead me safely to thy shores of fulfillment

Awaken within me increasing strength, positive thinking, courage, faith

And above all fill my heart

    With thine unconditional love

    With thine unconditional joy"

    Love this prayer.

  • actually the samples are backtracked but the synth isn't.

  • pause at 2:06 ... :3

this band is awesome btw! I love them!! ♥

  • Hey Paul! We are waiting for you in Hungary on Wednesday, 01.07 in Budapest! It's good to see yoou live. Cynic rules!

  • ive alwaysss thought him and Jake Gyllenhaal looked alike

  • haha, i was thinking the exact same thing.

  • what's the ipod for??

  • Probably to play the synthesizer track, As you can see they don' t have a keyboardist. That's the only thing I can imagine it being used for. I doubt it'd be a metronome.

  • The other guitarist is playing it. He has the roland hook up on his guitar. Its a guitar pedal that makes your guitar sound like a synth/keyboard. Its pretty sweet but expensive.

  • Backing track most likely as well as a count in most likely so the parts play at the right time.

  • its not a back track.

  • i know its late but I think it plays the synth and growls for the songs

  • screams and other sounds they cant make atm. like they dont have a synth or a growler so they took those from the master track, put one channel into the pa, and the other into the drummers ear so he could count the songs off.

  • what does paul use for his vocals?

  • Vocoder

  • Actually, he uses autotune now. 2 autotune pedals, one tuned an octave above, and another below. He used to use a vocoder, with someone behind the stage playing the keys for it.

  • Well all I know is that it sounds awesome.

  • so much heavier than the original. awesome!

  • Possibly. Paul = JH + Eastern philosophy + musical genius + trustworthy appearance.

  • Very.

  • Yes. I've always thought he looks like Jake.

When I went to see him he seemed like he was on a realllllly bad acid trip the whole night. It was funny as shit, but great.

  • ahh i fucking love this song cynic and portal is the way to go for sure in my book!

  • This is the only band i'd mention in the same sentence as Pink Floyd.FN stunningly awesome!

  • wat guitar is paul using??

  • Steinberger

  • thnx

  • exemplary work, truly. and i am beyond fuckin pissed that i missed them with the faceless, AND meshuggah </3

  • sorry to hear that

  • same here man,, and they played 10 mins from my apt.

pissed is an understatement for me

  • 0:23 lol at the guy that goes who-ooo! i just laugh my ass out cuz he's in every vid of this live!

  • Now this is some trippy stuff..

    Great song.

  • he sings the female parts very well, you can feel the emotion run through him

  • great!!!!!

  • i can live this revelation with magnified devotion...

  • What voice effect do they use live? It doesn't sound like a vocoder.

  • Ah, okay, it's pitch correction aka cher effect aka auto tune. ;)

  • It is a vocoder. Back in 93, they used a Digitech Vocalist II. It's now discontinued. They used to have some trigger the notes via keyboard when they played live and in the studio.

Have no clue what they use now but it's probably something different. Still a vocoder. I know what you mean tho. I've used a bunch of free plug in vocoders and have not got a sound like Cynic's.

They're def. using something that costs a little money.

  • They used a vocoder on the album, but live it's definitely real-time pitch correction. You can clearly hear how the tone always "jumps" to the correct pitch. This was made popular by Cher with "Believe", you can check the video out. ;)

  • so does he sing off key on purpose?

  • As said, this thingy is called pitch correction. It always corrects the pitch of the tone to a half-tone or however you set it up

  • I think he's singing in key but the harmonizer is hitting the pitch hard and unnaturally and also harmonizing. ?

  • I'm not sure what a vocoder is but this does sound like pitch correction but it also is harmonizing way higher than he's singing. I'm suprised I like it. haha...generally something like this would be the worlds most complete disaster! Rules here, though!

  • He's using 2 pitch correctors, both different octaves for harmony. I prefer their old vocoding method.

  • god.. this song is divine.. but.

I'd like SO MUCH, TO SEE ONCE Cynic playing "Circle" LIVE. sadly no Aruna around..

  • love the solo in this song, cant wait for the new record!

  • I'm dying to see just only one time Cynic playing live...it's just a little impossible dream...

  • Masvidal is so much relaxed that he looks high!

Great song great bands (Cynic and Portal)

  • i think he is high indeed.

  • two feets from Nirvana.

  • A DEVINE MYSTIC COSMIC SONG!!!

  • Anyone other than me that freaks out when the scary dude walks towards the camera at 2:55?

  • I freaked out because thats David Husvik, the drummer of my favorite band Extol! haha a huge fan of Cynic too.

also, Paul is definitely high, i can tell by how he butchers the solo lol

  • What do you mean, the solo was perfect.

  • i've been noticed about that too, and i send the video to david

  • this song is awesome.... how can i get that portal demo

  • If you get the 'Focus' Re-release that came out in 2004, it has the Portal demo on it.

  • You can download the entire demo off of Chris Kringal's (the bassist on the demo and in this video) website.

  • for free?

  • Yes, I did.

The Focus re-release only has 3 songs from the Portal demo.

The complete demo has 10 songs.

  • Good info man. Can't seem to find the website though. Can you help me out with an address?

  • Yea, really, where is his website?

  • fantastic!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song has one of the best solos from Paul...this song is like a interstellar trip... :)

  • The Portal material is downright genius. That lineup of musicians had such awesome writing chemistry. Gobel's solo in Karma's Plight is one of my all-time faves. And Aruna just rocked!

  • this ones entitled.... cosmos

lol that made me laugh paul sounded weird..

  • Brilliant song, a great addition to a cynic set. It lacks some of the depth of the recorded version. That version is so dense, almost as complex as a cynic song in a way.

  • This takes me away to different places, the cosmos i guess...... whrever it is that i go the song is amazing

  • Exelent song

  • This is a very excellent band. I gonna a CD.

  • I would have prefered if Paul played Circle its a waaaay better song but female vox are needed so thats a shame :(

  • Oh WOW, this is so much better with his vocals than hers.

  • I disagree. I think female vocals suit better. But then again, you cannot dispute taste.

  • Very nice one.Its like a celestial trip.close your eyes,relax and enjoy.Thanks Cynic

  • a bad ass fucking song but a pain n the ass because i dont have it i wish i did

  • COSS-MOSS

  • Cosmos = Bliss.

  • like it

    cosmos
