Thanks; always great to learn more ways to do this...tried it with Mason line and, besides being nice looking and loud...more whip grab, more tangling...so I cut it off and put a polypro popper on- problem solved
Thanks so much Bernie, you've taught me to make some nice whips. How do you bind your crackers on? The way I do it works, but I'm curious as to your method, and I can't find your video on it.
Anyway, you've opened a new world for me, thanks again pal!
@ickybiker go to my site and click on the tutorial link, click make your own cracker and it will take you to a page with two videos, Replace Cracker is the one you want.
@Ir0nF1st924 Anywhere from 20 inches to 30 inches. A lot depends on how heavy your whip is. The best way to find out is to start with 30 inches and slowly take an inch off at a time until it cracks right. Your will find however that most whips from 6ft up do well on a 30 inch fall and you let them wear down until you think it's not doing the job.
@bernie46 thank you :) i heard that there should be very little effort when doing the actual cracking, for example there should be little effort when pulling the whip back on a tasmanian cutback to get it to crack, is this true?
@Ir0nF1st924 No. When I first started making whips over 37 years ago now the norm for a fall was 18 inches. As long as you don't crack down to the plaiting you will be fine.
@crazy9516 The longest lastin is a cracker made from thick sewing thread which has a nylon mix but it does tend to tangle in the fall a lot. I prefer baling twine that is used to tie large round bales of hay. It doesn't last as long but it gives a nice loud crack, is usually free if you know a farmer and it's very easy to make your own crackers.
By all means but keep in mind the lighter the whip the lighter the cracker should be so you will most probably have to reduce the thickness of the baling twine a bit for a smaller whip. Experiment a bit until you come up with what you want.
Go to my site, address is above and click on the tutorials link at the top of the page. That will take you to a page where you will find a link on how to make and change your cracker. There is also a video on how to make one and how to change it as well.
His prices are high because of quality backed by years of experience. You will unlikely be able to reproduce what he does, or make any kind of profit unless you cut corners. You make be making cats, but not HIS.
thanks so much for the video, other than baling twine (in case i won't be be able to find any) are there other types of string that would make great crackers? :D
Builders line, butchers string, any type of polypropylene type string will do the trick. Check out Wallmart and you might find some there. If it's thin you just have to use more of it.Instead of having one piece of string 2ft long you might need 2 bits.Just experiment a bit and see what works best for you.
Just go to my site em-brand-whips, just google that, can't put the full address here youtube won't let me, and check through that. Keep in mind the prices I have on there are in US dollars.
Hi Bernie, First: i'm from México, second: my english is very bad, Third: I need help. So i have buy a whip but i don't know how kind of wax i need to care it. The products in the webpages are not for sale in my contry so... i can use wax for example Turtle wax or Tempo (wax for cars) or tell me some one. Thanks for all. Greetings from Jalisco, land of Tequila!
Any good leather dressing that you would use on a saddle will do the trick. If you have a saddle shop or saddle maker near you try them and they should be able to recommend something for you to use.
Bernie thanks for the video quick question when attaching the cracker do i need to just knot it or is there a special knot that needs to be done thanks, turboman1010
If you use your whip a lot they won't last all that long but the beauty of them is that you can usuall get the material for nothing and they are easy to make.
On the right of the page here there is a link to more of my videos. Pick out the video named "Change Fall 3" and 6 minutes and 46 seconds into the video I show you how to change your cracker.
Go to david morgan. Click on Leather Goods, then Braided Goods, then Whips..You'll see a list on the left of different maintence tips for whips..Cracker replacement being one of them...Hope this helps you..
I think you'll find this link helpful, pegasuswa...It teaches you how to attach the cracker. And also, this website teaches you how to replace the fall.
Thanks for the vid. I am Making my first stock with. You said the cracker in the vid was for bull whips or heavey whip what would you use on a 4 plait 5" stock whip?
I made my first cracks from your technique. I have also killed both of my crackers at the same day and made new working ones from your video. what else can i say. 5/5
Hey Bernie, Love your vids!!! How do you attach the cracker to the fall? No matter what I try, the cracker usually comes off fairly quickly. Any tips?
Hey bernie, sorry for the question but could you write down what string material you used to make the popper? With your australian accent it's a bit hard to find out what it is :D sounds like "barlin twine".
It's baling twine. I use the thin baling twine that is used on round bales of hay. If you use the baling twine that is used on square bales you will have to reduce the thinckness by about a quarter
Your videos are great! I've a roo-hide stockwhip that the fall broke off of almost 10 yrs ago. I was really sad and thought it was ruined, so its been hanging on my wall with the rest of my Aussie gear ever since. Thanks so much, after watching your videos I think I can fix it. If I can you will have given me a great Christmas present indeed!
hey i have looked every where for instructions on making a whip i am very interested in making my own if you could make a video it would be greatly appriciated
My wife and I were in Black Duck three years ago this February fishing at Red Lake for Walleye. Wish I'd known then. Small world isn't it? It was funny we had just gotten back to Tasmania from the US and a customer got in touch with me for a whip and from all places, Black Duck Minnesota.
niiiice vid....can't keep my self from smiling as i was watching this, didn't know it was that simple...a very educational videa...and yes please do keep them coming....
Exactly my thoughts. There are a lot of videos out there as you say showing whip cracking but none that I have come across yet that actually show you how to do it. The videos I show on here are all included in the dvd I send out with all my whips because I know there are a lot of people who buy whips off me who have never used a whip before, hopefully this helps.
so far i have watched many of the whip videos on this website and i have to say that your videos are by far the best. i know that there are the "showy" videos out there that show off the speed of the cracking, but to people that are truly interested in becoming more educated about whips and the construction of the whips, your videos are great. very easy to understand and good quality. please keep them coming!!
Thanks; always great to learn more ways to do this...tried it with Mason line and, besides being nice looking and loud...more whip grab, more tangling...so I cut it off and put a polypro popper on- problem solved

y does mine just make this rally light noise?? it doesnt crack and ive worked with whips for like years.
maxkiller304 2 years ago
There could be a number of reasons. Your cracker might be to heavy ,your whip might be to light or it just might not be a very good whip.

I didn't have any baling twine for my rope whip so I used a piece of white thick cord and it makes it crack louder than it used to. :P
