@throwedmayne How many Euphonium players does it take to screw in a lightbulb? 4. 1 to screw it in, and the other 3 to try and explain what a euphonium is. (Also a low brass guy myself!) :D
lol i once talked to one of our more expirienced trumpet players (had a huge ego typical of all trumpets) he said he wanted to march contrabass. He couldn't have weighed more than 110 pounds... i said you understand you would never be able to hold that thing up at set....
@limegut I heard that. BD didn't call their Euphonium players "Monster men" back in the day for no reason. I played Lead bari for 6 seasons, damned if I'd pick up one of those beasts, even though I AM a Euphonium player, LOL. All due respect to any beasts out there who carry them.
@heybulldog90 In phantom regiment they issue 2 dog tags for everyone. And when they age out, they all meet in the middle of the championships field (whether they still march for phantom or for a different corp or not all) and put one of their dog tags in the middle of the field and walk off.
2. and its really awesome just that if you listen around a band you dont hear the contras complaining. After 12 hours we get up and do it all again the next day. Im very very proud of being a tuba player.
1. Yeah go tuba. Gotta say its true. At least in my band we're always there for each other. Just a bunch of best buds who work their ass off to make a nice bass line. I know that in my band we are really there for each other and we could call each other at any time if we're in season or not if we're in a spot. Just a real tight section. Gotta say tho. Out of all the sections we are the most laid back when not playing. We love what we do but we know to put it down and just have fun sometimes.
I agree that us euphoniums just sit back and know it. And im a bit surprised ther wasnt a flugelhorn. Fluges are awesome. But i must say, Low brass power.
This video makes me laugh because all of the personalities that they describe about each instrument are so true. I play the euphonium and I feel exactly like that guy does. "We just know"! So true
They do, baritones are marching instruments, euphonium is generally a concert instrument. The names are interchangable, valves and tone is really what seperates the two. I play baritone/euphonium, it's heavy and we have to push alot of air. But, let's not forget, marching band makes it count and it is fun!
But they convert the concert instrument into a marching horn. its twice as bigger than the marching baritone and has the full Non compensating sound of a standard concert euphonium. Most corps have a split section, 1st baris, 2ed baris, then Euphs.
they are NOT interchangeable. ther r concert baris AND marching baris. there are also concert euphs AND marching euphs. 4 different horns. most corps that have enough low end will have some on euph n some on bari. slightly different voice. the euphs r darker and beefier.

Trumpet is for me a very fun instrument to play but it is a decision totally up to you maybe you want to try all of the brass instruments and see which one appeals to you the most
well i will tell you firsthand, when you play the trumpet first and you KNOW HOW TO PLAY IT WELL, you can go down the brass spectrum with little difficulty. learn the highest to learn the lowest. watch the pitchiness of those damn mellos lol but baritone/euphonium isnt bad at all after trumpet- good luck! you won't regret it
I agree. I play trumpet in my high school band,I am pretty good at it, marched corps going into my senior year of high school. I decided to pick up Baritone for the other concert band, and it really is quite easy to pick up. I went from not knowing how to read bass clef or ever playing it one day, literally a week later I could read and play any music people gave to me.
Mellophone is definitely the hardest marching brass instrument to learn, but I would go with that. In a marching band the saxophones and mellophones carry the alto voice of the band, so if you want the same type of music I would choose that.
maybe, because you have to learn a different key but i would say contra is the hardest, 40 lbs, every half note you use up your complete lung capacity of air) try playing as loud & low as possible & see how long you can play
The Partials are only a third away from each other and there are so many alternative fingerings for things, so if you accidentally miss a partial you could all the wrong notes! In other words, you have to have a really good ear to play it.
My god drum corps with one valve, oh no 2 valves, oh wait now 3?!?!?!? OMFG it's the end of the world!!!! You mean the drumline doesn't march up and down the 50 anymore?!?!?

The operative item is the item they used to call the 'bugle'. Yeah, evolution takes place, but usually without drastic mutations - ala G-Bugle into the 'made for indoor sitdowns' Bb instruments. Maybe I would be more receptive if I had never was a spectator of DCI in the '80's and '90s, or never performed with The Commandant's Own , Marine Drum and BUGLE Corps (which still use G-Bugles today). You may call it 'evolution', but Bb horns are currently used in...(wait for it)...MARCHING BANDS.
Yes I know they still use 2-valve bugles. A couple who marched there are in my current DCA corps and one more is in my Army band. But you can not compare the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps to DCI or DCA, they are 2 completely different beasts. However, knowing the reasons why they switched from G to Bb, I believe it was the right move. Now don't even get me started on that amplification bullshit they got going on.
But your same argument applied to everyone else's argument when they added a valve (because now they aren't technically bugles, they are now a valved instrument), then 2 valves and 3 valves, and then finally to Bb.
I know an former Marine turned Army Guard guy, named Randy Huntley. He is with the Army Band here at the Reserve Center at Bolling, AFB, right outside of WashDC. Like I mentioned before, Bb horns are the problem that I have with DCI now.Yeah,I heard about all the cost issues with keeping the G horns, but now it sounds like I am at a college football game with a talented marching band.Valve numbers aside, G power was where it was at, for me. My last DCI trip is to Atlanta this wkend. No mas.
wow. i thought i was the only one who thought that the different sections had different personalities. i'm SO glad to hear that crown feels the same way. if only i could play/march well enough... <3

No mas.

Gotta love PR's emphasis on the "meat and potatoes" of their corps.
EUPHS is where it's at, baby!

Oh wow, that is eerily accurate. Each section really does have their own personality. Euphs, man, that's where it's at.
