Michael Parkinson: How do you react when someone says, "Boss, you're doing it wrong?"
Brian Clough: Well, I ask him how *he* thinks it ought to be done. And then we get down to it, and we talk about it for twenty minutes, and then we decide that I was right.
very tired of listening to Leeds comments here...how typical of over inflated ego's
He managed Nottingham Forest and Derby County, to greatness. I was lucky enough to be at the Forest v Hamburg European cup final, at the end of the match the team done a lap of the bernabau, Brian Clough was lead by Martin O Neil, and I kid you not Brian Clough was crying. It's never reported of course...
By retaining that European cup at Nottingham Forest he achieved immortality, in the very least in Nottingham
Best world cup I ever saw was when Brian was one of the panelists - maybe '82 (not sure of that) - but he made it all the more entertaining - no arse kissing - straight from the hip - as it should be!
I'm from Greece, Cloughie never coached my fave team, Liverpool, but he's the top manager of all times... You can't not recognize and respect what this man did, and I honestly think his greatness will never be surpassed... As such, I think it's a travesty that Cloughie hasn't yet received his knighthood!
Dont forget that Clough was right.Everyone in the land knew that Leeds were a great team but also filthy bastards who fouled and cheated at every given opportunity. If you think it was wrong of Clough to come out with the truth (because it hurt's) thats understandable but only Leeds fans will defend the undefendable..which it was 100%.
no manager is, was, or ever will be better than cloughy. i know people will suggest paisely, shankly, ferguson are better as of cups won, but theyve won these trophies with united and liverpool, and cloughy won them with (no disrespect) derby and Nottingham. could you imagine someone taking Plymouth from where they are now to back-to-back european championships in 5 seasons?
1978 around xmas time forest played at home against liverpool the reigning european champions. There were thousands of us in the paddock area. Two guys walked around the pitch track before the game with a banner saying something like :'well done liverpool , european champions'
That would have been cloughies work , no one else would have done such a thing .
Your being biased cos your a leeds fan. Don revie would've won you trophys whilst you were in the top flight. Clough would've took you from where you are now and turned you into champions. I know which one I'd be more grateful for.
i am truly not being biased and also Revie did take us from battling relegation in divisoin 2 every year to the greatest side in europe along side Real madrid so i just think revie is as good even a bit better
Of course youre not being biased - Leeds were the greatest side in Europe alongside Real Madrid despite never having won the European Cup (the only EC final they got to was under Armfield after Revie left!)
Revie (0 European Cups) as good as
Clough (2 European Cups) - sure.
Leeds (0 European Cups) as good as Real Madrid ( by the time Revie left Leeds) - sure
you seem to forget that the UEFA as they are known now depised leeds at that time and didnt want them to win any european trophy - if you asked team who they feared to play against in that era it was leeds. even beckenbauer himself said it after he had himself robbed us from the european cup fianl in 75. and anyay the team armfield took over was assembled by don revie as his SUPER LEEDS team as they were known round the world.
To be fair Leeds did win two Fairs Cup titles which was emblematic of the European Championship prior to the UEFA/Champions League Cup we know today. BOTH under Revie.
Clough's success was every bit as great as he won the Div. 1/Premiership with Derby and Nottingham Forest. (Not to mention his 2 straight UEFA cups.) Taking 2 backwater clubs to the heights that Derby and Notts Forest got to was nothing short of a miracle.
Both guys deserve their due as legends of the sport.
@WatchVenusSpa the european cup is now the champoins league not the fairs cup.that was a 2nd rate cup same as uefa cup today. revie had money at leeds.he didnt build the team he bought them.clough built 2 teams from scratch got them up them won the league with them.revie would never be able to do that
@tumteetumjelenia. That fucking wanker Clough made us loose vs Kevin Keegans Liverpool, WE won alot ot titles under Revie. Dont forget that Brian Clough was unpopular with Leeds fans.
@bullshitdetective1 . What ever. He was shit. Revie was the best but we just tackled very hard. Clough only lasted 44 days at Leeds coz he didnt let the players do what they wanted to do.

Today's football sadly is a rich mans game run by tv boss's, oil tycoons and american billionaires. Long gone are the days when any football fan of any football team could dream that maybe just maybe one day their club could win the Premiership or even the European Cup. Clough 30 years ago made football great and free and made dreams possible for all. 30 years from now? I hope that our beautiful game continues to be enjoyed by many and not just the wealthy few. never seen a bad word said about him from any football fan up and down the land or around the world not many people can say then ..... a total one off
Brian Clough the best manager Middlesbrough never had if he could create miracles for Derby & Forest he'd of turned Boro into a colosus.the best manager England never had. If he was England boss it wouldnt be a matter of if he would win the world cup. It would be a case of how many. England would be on a par with Italy, Brazil, The Germans & France & we'd of saw them all off. RIP Clough the best manager ever.
he was the greatest and dispite derby and nottinghams rivalry he cared about both of us and we both cared bowt him the rivalry will always b there but so will he
An absolute legend, anything can happen in world cup matches/tournaments but im sure if he'd been given the England job at the right time we'd have had a bit more to shout about.
Greatest manager England never had (thanks you FA twats) and a truly great character. To win the league with Derby and two back to back European Cups with Forest says it all.
We met Brian Clough at Burton Albion shortly before his death, he interrupted me just as he was, but you could see he was still a power even though he was now just a frail old man.
His Heart you could also see, he was a tender man. A good man.
Could Ferguson go to Wolves and make them European champions? Not in a million years! That's the equivalent of what Cloughie did at Forest. By the way, where did Ferguson get Roy Keane from? Forest. Just because I might drive a Ferrari and race past you it doesn't make me a better driver. Ferguson has had advantages no other manager in England has had. Ince, Sherringham, Kanchelskis, Bruce, Pallister, Cole, etc, etc, were all bought! In football money talks.
Brian Clough was the greatest ever. By the way he took charge of an England team once for a European tournament - guess what, they won it. Don't believe all the hype about Ferguson. Clough won two European cups at Forest, if he'd been at Man Utd for 20 years with the most money he'd have won five.
Dont talk bollocks. Your talking about two completely different era's and you will find that United were just making up the numbers when Fergie arrived and he built his fortune by the success hes had so stop using money as an excuse. The class of 92 Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, Butt, Gary and Phil Neville went on to be the corner stone of United's success in the 90's, not a penny spent on them. Typicla anti United, I have to laugh!
im a huge forrest fan and he was the best manager the world had seen he didnt take anybody crap he did it his way or the high way clough lives in legand and legand were it stands long live clough and the high road to victory forrest and clough rule
do you know, im so pleased with the responces on my wee video, its great, I met the man at burton albion just a small time before his death, he was strong, he interrupted like he did but he was sincere and strong and from a females point of view he was a loving man.

Thankyou from the girl that did this film xxxxxxxxx
so true.Yes,Sir Brian had slightly more success with Notts Forest but his heart and soul was/is always at Derby and that's something you just can't put a price on.
the only man that can bring derby an forest fans together nigel shud cum to derby where he belongs nigel told my cuz his dad regretted leavin derby county his hole life an that even at forest winnin the european cup he still longed to be at derby great man !
A great tribute to THE GREATEST. Before he went, he said Jose reminded him of the young Cloughie, but he said he was better looking than Jose at his age. That guy should have been cloned.
I went to visit his statue in Albert Park Middlesbrough the other day. What an absolute legend. I'm Derby born and bred. Anywhere where this man is remembered and honoured, i will make sure i go down and pay a visit. He did more than contribute, he brought hope and inspiration.
"I want no epitaphs of profound history and all that type of thing. I contributed. I would hope they would say that, and I would hope somebody liked me"
as sunderland fan i new the man more of a manger than i did as a player but hes a legend in both playing and mangement and he shound of had the england job to but i guess the fa are gutless but mr clough will always been remember he is better than ferge simple as
what old big ead did for both derby county and nottingham forest will NEVER be reapeated to take 2 small midlands clubs and win 3 league championships and 2 european cups was amazing. And not forgetting he took derby to the european cup semi final were they were cheated out of a cup final place by cheating diving and bribery by juventus
I am a life long Spurs supporter and I believe that Clough was the greatest British manager ever. Had it not been for the fact that the FA loathed his politics, Clough would have also proved to have been the greatest England manager as well, I am convinced of it. Just glance at his record with the resources he had available. No brainer. RIP Cloughie.
I'd just like to correct leiverskid who said Cloughie would be the best England manager since Sir Alf, Wrong, he'd have been the best England manager EVER!!
One of the true footballing greats. Pity he let himself down with his unfortunate comments after Hillsborough. That aside this guy must have been in the top 5 managers ever, not sure what position though. Paisley, Ferguson, Shankly, Clough & of course Jock Stein
There will never ever be another like cloughy, quite simply because most are too involved in licking the f.a.'s ass. Steve Mclaren wouldn't be worthy to lick the sh1t of his shoes, I bet Cloughy is turning in his grave knowin who the england manager is now.. Who ever had the last say on Cloughy not being England manager should be put in the stocks...
Clough - The best club manager the Football league has seen and if it was not for upper crust FA crowd, who have to date screwed up everything to do with securing the head coach - would have been the best England manager since Sir Alf Ramsey!
i bought his biography years ago at an airport, then went and lost it on the tube on the way home from airport!!! anyways i bought it again a few weeks back, started reading it a few days ago, its an excellent read, recommend it 2 anyone who likes football. interesting person, football wise, politically and mannerisms. i liked him. shame i only was old enough to see his decline rather than his glory years.

I would hope they would say that, and I would hope somebody liked me"
The legend will always live on.

what old big ead did for both derby county and nottingham forest will NEVER be reapeated to take 2 small midlands clubs and win 3 league championships and 2 european cups was amazing.

Who ever had the last say on Cloughy not being England manager should be put in the stocks...
nufccrazy101 4 years ago
His contribution to the game should never be forgotten!
