The libretto written by Metastasio was very popular and put many times into music by all the important composer of that time because the topic celebrated the Emperor and his virtue... in that sense we may say that was an "opera di circostanza", infact were played for the emperor birthday, for the coronation day or other important circumstances...

The libretto of La Clemenza di Tito was so popular seventy composers wrote operas from it in the eighteenth century. But Mozart's is considered the ultimate product of this opera serie.

The text Mozart used is quite different from the original though.

Gluck looks somewhat like Mahler, minus the glasses! Astounding composition, btw. I wonder how many composed their own versions of this opera (Mozart composed his "La Clemenza di Tito.") Was it as popular as "Demonfoonte" at the time?
