great video. it helps me so much to learn and have a better idea about sound, all arjen's proyect are awesome i listen them every time since 12 years ago,
( sorry for my bad english) greeting from Argentina
@ArjenALucassen Sorry, i made myself rather difficult to understand... What i ment was: have you modified the cabinet with a new element, or is that the stock elements? The g12h (you indeed mentioneed this in the video - actually the reason for my question). I can't seem to find a 112 cabinet with these elements from laney :) Thanks for the answer so far by the way - much appreciated.
hello Arjen Lucassen! Im kinda interested in this thing that you do, about staying on your feet while recording and producing, where did this idea come from? Can you give me some light about it? im thinking about doing it in my studio. Thanks! :D
@zitee Well, actually I can't sit anymore with my bad back. At first I had to get used to standing all day. But I have to say, it's much better this way and better for your body. Try it!
Great video Arjen. I started using a 1x12 as well because of your advice and it's great (as well as space friendly) I have a vintage 30 in mine but I may swap to the G12h that you use for a warmer tone. Thanks once again!
There's never a need to stop practicing just because people like Yngwie are around, you could pretty much be one of the world's best guitarists if you'd continue practicing for the past years :) But anyone in the world would envy the amazing compositions you've made, and the crazy challenging harmonies, as well as the feel and emotion in your music. It's pure real and excellent!
Hello, Mr. Arjen. First, give you thanks for that video so interesting and a good job. Second, a couple of questions. I'm been thinking about buying a preAmp and after my long searching I don't know which. I have heard very well of the PSA, but I like also the Rocktron Voodu Valve. Do you test the Rocktron ?. It's suitable for metal tones ? Greetings from Spain.
The thing with Arjen Lucassen is that he really deserves to make a living on his music. I bought the first DVD-release with Star One and after having listened to this new album, I must say it is almost even better. Good albums deserve to be bought, Victims of the Modern Age is stunning! By the way, I am also a guitarist and I really like the sound on the new album!
You may not be considered the best guitarist in the mainstream opinion, but in the eyes of people that know music and have had the opportunity to listen to any of your albums, they know you are one of the best musicians out there! Keep it up!
Hey Arjen, do you think I can get the WTF sound (bass sound) haha if I place my 57 in the position you placed your ribbon mic? I only have a 57 and I can't get my ears to like the sound :( also when you record 6 guitar tracks do you pan 3 of them completely to the right and left? thanks for the video!
That is some serious insanity there! I really like the tone of the Sansamp PSA 1.1 through the Marshall's powerstage--is that 59SLP? Absolutely cruuushing.
I had never heard of this band until I was surfing youtube for Blake's 7 music vids and came across a live concert video of Intergalactic Space Crusaders - the singers were practically channeling Blake and Avon! I googled for more info on the band, then watched some more youtube videos...I love the sound, I love the lyrics, I love every show/movie the songs are based on, (and the Liberator photo on the website) and just purchased the deluxe edition (2 CD) version of Space Metal (for Spaced Out)

Greetings Arjen, I've always admired your work, for many out there, you set the standards (real high). Many guitar players spend so much time thinking on the guitar sound as the holy grail of heavy riff playing, it's very complicated to set the amps by serial, parallel or using the effects loops in and out as you do, it takes so much time (and $ as well) that many of us decide to stick to an amp and try to make the best we can with what we have...
@ronaldmoracastillo it's a fact you have given us a nice tip, the bass mic is a new thing for me, I'm recording some stuff and I hope I can do some micing to experiment, as you show.
Thanks for the info and for letting all of us -guitar freaks- your secret weapons for this amazing recording!
Thank you for posting such informative videos Arjen! I can't wait to get this album. I am a guitarist and also act as recording engineer for my band. I wanted to ask you about the enclosure you are using for the 1x12 Celestion speaker. Do you think it matters what kind of enclosure (who made it) or the kind of wood, etc.? Before I record guitars for my bands next EP I wanted to try and emulate your recording setup (as much as I can afford!). Much respect!
Is that a G12h silver or Heritage you have in there? I've just acquired an old 12" PA speaker enclosure with a Mckenzie inside which I'm thinking of replacing with a celestion and I like the sound of yours. Cheers.
@ANOMTOfficial Oh yes, indeed. Luckily I sold a lot of CD's before the illegal downloading started! And I've still got a lot of loyal fans who still buy my stuff, I'm happy to say :-)
Do you see yourself ever re-releasing all of your other Ayreon albums on vinyl any time soon? I hear that vinyl is going to replace CD's and make artists a lot of money.
@ArjenALucassen HAHA! You are such a character. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks a lot!
I've noticed though that the guitar tones I tend to prefer are from guys who use power tube distortion instead (to me, it's a more organic sound), but I like yours too.
The first Star One album blew my mind, and I went crazy when I heard Star One would be releasing a second album! As I live in Singapore, no record stores carry metal CDs so my aunt is bringing me VoAMA from UK next week. Can't wait!
Hey Arjen, loving the new album! Looks from the video that you run quite a humble studio, which only makes the quality of your mixes even more impressive...do you use any acoustic/sound treatment in the room or is it just a typical room?
Arjen, for Guitar Rig you can dl the demo on Native Instruments website. It works as plugin but also standalone, so you can decide if it's worth 170 euro. But the best of the best in amp sim is the Fractal Axe Fx Ultra. 2.200 eur, rackable and kills the rest.
@ArjenALucassen This is the most beautiful Ibanez I've ever seen. Is it a Custom Shop or a standard model ? And also can you please inform us on the pick-ups ? Thank you.
Thank you for the insight. I use the exact same pod as well and dialed in your settings from (I think) the clip you had with "Actual Fantasy Revisted". I blend the rectifier with the jcm 800 and get a similar tone! One question, I noticed on the Trailer for the CD, you had something tied around the top of the neck by the headstock. Is that to deaden any unwanted string noise? Thank you!

Though I didn't quite get about the number of guitar tracks. He says he's got 6 tracks (3 left, 3 right) of SansAmp, Bogner and Marshall. But then he must be recording each mic separately. That will give 18 total tracks (left: 3 amps x 3 mics; right : 3 amps x 3 mics). I don't think he blends all 3 mics into a single track.
@hartajpwns703 It's a Marshall MK2, given to me by Accept when I played with them back in the 90's. It's been modified by someone in Germany, don't know his name...
Hmm... I don't really give a crap about technical competence, doesn't matter if the mood (or in most guitar heroes case the singer) sucks, and the purpose of the song is to put the guitarist into spotlight. I think your video is good evidence how you put hell of a work, to serve the sound, melody and atmosphere of the song - and therefor the big picture you mentioned. So you became one of the very bests anyways :) ... though I have no complaints about your playing skills !!! ;)
The world lost a shredder but won an incredible songwriter... I like the "why bother"... so said Michael Mc Kean about Malmsteem in the making of RJ Dio "Stars".
Wow, there's a LOT of work to it... And knowing you being a real perfectionist... Did you ever get some sleep during the process of making the album? ;-)
I think the album will blow Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen ànd Yngwie Malmsteen away!!
Very interesting vid! Thanx and ... can you tell us a little bit more about your recording tricks ;-) For a very brutal guitarsound just "in the box" I use the NI GuitarRig 4 with the additional plugin called "Rammfire". It´s awesome! Do you know it? If not, check this out!
awesome! UBERSHALL!!! haha. btw arjen, i think something isnt going right with your videos/subscribers. i check my subscriptions everyday, and more often than not its multiple times a day, and this video was uploaded 4 days ago it says, and ive only just seen it in my subscriptions. this happened a few times with your other videos like the giveaways etc
@darthedvin Oh no, that's not what I meant, ha! I meant I didn't get paid to say all this stuff :-) But I don't mind people buying the album of course, hehe...
Oh and i talk with Ashmedi of Melechesh often, he loves to use Rocktron Voodu valve with marshall or evh

@ROCKXX74 Thanks for the tips! Hmm...Rammfire...that sounds interesting :-)

@Linqua2112 Arjen (or his PM Lori) usually uploads video's privately, then they switch them to public when they are ready to be viewed :)

@ArjenALucassen playing in front of a camera makes me slip up too. But much worse as I'm merely an amateur :-P
