  • My ears... have been pleased.

  • you're genius and i love you Arjen ! :)

  • Awesomee!!!

Arjen is one of my favorite guitarrists!! \ô/ \õ/ \õ/ \õ/

  • Awesomeness with a capital AWE.

  • your videos are so cool

  • great video. it helps me so much to learn and have a better idea about sound, all arjen's proyect are awesome i listen them every time since 12 years ago,

( sorry for my bad english) greeting from Argentina

  • Your sound is pretty modern.. you play kinda djenty actually.. wich I like:P

  • ooooooooooooooooooohhhhh1!!

  • give an amp!!! you have a lot!!!

  • @ArjenALucassen i said this in an other video of yours but... you sound exactly like Dr. Nicholas Rush from Stargate Universe :D

and great video by the way ^_^

  • Great video! FLIGHT OF THE MIGRATOR is an increeeeedible album... you are an enormous inspiration!

can´t seem to stop hearing your music.

  • Diggin the new album up and down... One question - the Laney cabinet, is that the origial speaker in it? THe new ones comes with other elements..

  • @gazuul It's got a Celestion speaker. I'm not sure which one, i think I mention it in the clip?

  • @ArjenALucassen Sorry, i made myself rather difficult to understand... What i ment was: have you modified the cabinet with a new element, or is that the stock elements? The g12h (you indeed mentioneed this in the video - actually the reason for my question). I can't seem to find a 112 cabinet with these elements from laney :) Thanks for the answer so far by the way - much appreciated.

  • Oh, the grammar errors... I'm embarrassed... "The g12h is a great sounding element"

  • Arjen, je bent geniaal!

  • hello Arjen Lucassen! Im kinda interested in this thing that you do, about staying on your feet while recording and producing, where did this idea come from? Can you give me some light about it? im thinking about doing it in my studio. Thanks! :D

  • @zitee Well, actually I can't sit anymore with my bad back. At first I had to get used to standing all day. But I have to say, it's much better this way and better for your body. Try it!

  • Arjen, you are a true legend, and a hero for anyone with a passion for music.

I would just like to say thanks for all the inspiration, and I can't wait to hear your next project.

  • @SpriteBat Totally !

  • you gave up trying to be the greatest guitarrist and became the greatest musician...

  • Great video Arjen. I started using a 1x12 as well because of your advice and it's great (as well as space friendly) I have a vintage 30 in mine but I may swap to the G12h that you use for a warmer tone. Thanks once again!

  • P.S. Your music is so over the top. Please continue Ayreon.... (The human equation Part II? :-) )

  • Hell yeah, Arjen! That is what I call Chaos ;-) Greetings from Luxembourg

  • There's never a need to stop practicing just because people like Yngwie are around, you could pretty much be one of the world's best guitarists if you'd continue practicing for the past years :) But anyone in the world would envy the amazing compositions you've made, and the crazy challenging harmonies, as well as the feel and emotion in your music. It's pure real and excellent!

  • 3:58 the bogner...UBERSHSHSHSHSHSHSHALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

    It's made me UBERLOL!!!XD!!!

  • Hello, Mr. Arjen. First, give you thanks for that video so interesting and a good job. Second, a couple of questions. I'm been thinking about buying a preAmp and after my long searching I don't know which. I have heard very well of the PSA, but I like also the Rocktron Voodu Valve. Do you test the Rocktron ?. It's suitable for metal tones ? Greetings from Spain.

  • some good advice here !

  • Cooking up sounds in the electric kitchen! Goed bezig Arjen!

  • The thing with Arjen Lucassen is that he really deserves to make a living on his music. I bought the first DVD-release with Star One and after having listened to this new album, I must say it is almost even better. Good albums deserve to be bought, Victims of the Modern Age is stunning! By the way, I am also a guitarist and I really like the sound on the new album!

  • You may not be considered the best guitarist in the mainstream opinion, but in the eyes of people that know music and have had the opportunity to listen to any of your albums, they know you are one of the best musicians out there! Keep it up!

  • the mic placement section was awesome and very helpful. thanks so much for posting this

  • exc....!!!!!! thanks Arjen!!!

  • Barney Stinson with long hair! :D :D

  • This man is a genious.

  • Hey Arjen, do you think I can get the WTF sound (bass sound) haha if I place my 57 in the position you placed your ribbon mic? I only have a 57 and I can't get my ears to like the sound :( also when you record 6 guitar tracks do you pan 3 of them completely to the right and left? thanks for the video!

  • Greetings from Mr. 2inches :D

  • Damn you, Arjen Lucassen! You taunt us for our 5 centimeter penises, while flaunting your massive Bogner! Damn you!

  • what pickup model is used in this Ibanez? stock?

  • THANK YOU ARJEN ! star one amazed me !!

  • Thanks for sharing some tips

  • The sound on "VOTMA" is one of the best, I have ever heard! Comparing to the sound I appreciate

  • Star One rocked my world - Star One/2 rocks harder! way to go, Arjen - from singapore.

  • That is some serious insanity there! I really like the tone of the Sansamp PSA 1.1 through the Marshall's powerstage--is that 59SLP? Absolutely cruuushing.

  • Nice Überschall expression Arjen hahahaha :D

  • Hey Arjen... dude you're really good on guitar...and all your projects and stuffs is just freaking awesome...

can i ask you something? no offense....

but do you even think in a possibility of working with Steve Vai in a near future with some of your "mighty" projects? ^^ ...

hm i really have this dream, and in my opinion you two are the best composers around the universe.

    Thanks.

waiting an answer... dont get me wrong Arjen...It's just a dream i have... =]

  • @FredyroX :O i have that same dream, i too think they are the 2 greatest composers :D

  • I had never heard of this band until I was surfing youtube for Blake's 7 music vids and came across a live concert video of Intergalactic Space Crusaders - the singers were practically channeling Blake and Avon! I googled for more info on the band, then watched some more youtube videos...I love the sound, I love the lyrics, I love every show/movie the songs are based on, (and the Liberator photo on the website) and just purchased the deluxe edition (2 CD) version of Space Metal (for Spaced Out)

  • Wow, I never realized how much work you put into designing your sounds. And granted, the result IS amazing.

  • @Cbay What was the reason you click this video ??????????

  • ÜÜÜÜBERSCHALL :D

  • Greetings Arjen, I've always admired your work, for many out there, you set the standards (real high). Many guitar players spend so much time thinking on the guitar sound as the holy grail of heavy riff playing, it's very complicated to set the amps by serial, parallel or using the effects loops in and out as you do, it takes so much time (and $ as well) that many of us decide to stick to an amp and try to make the best we can with what we have...

  • @ronaldmoracastillo it's a fact you have given us a nice tip, the bass mic is a new thing for me, I'm recording some stuff and I hope I can do some micing to experiment, as you show.

Thanks for the info and for letting all of us -guitar freaks- your secret weapons for this amazing recording!

  • very interesting, thanks! I don't like symphonic and anything related, but have to say: I dig your tunes, you rule.

  • Arjen youre number 1 my friend!

  • Nice C-3 in the background....do you use Lesile 147???

For my bass, guitar, and vocal a POD X3 is nice...I amlost bought a Sans Amp years ago...

Thanks for showing us your guitar configuration....I have always admired your work...

  • Thank you for posting such informative videos Arjen! I can't wait to get this album. I am a guitarist and also act as recording engineer for my band. I wanted to ask you about the enclosure you are using for the 1x12 Celestion speaker. Do you think it matters what kind of enclosure (who made it) or the kind of wood, etc.? Before I record guitars for my bands next EP I wanted to try and emulate your recording setup (as much as I can afford!). Much respect!

    Shane

  • As always when I watch a video with this man I go from being 38 to 16 in a couple of seconds. This is pure love for me :-))

  • rawr with that camera moving i cant see the fingering to learn that part :(

  • Is that a G12h silver or Heritage you have in there? I've just acquired an old 12" PA speaker enclosure with a Mckenzie inside which I'm thinking of replacing with a celestion and I like the sound of yours. Cheers.

  • Good Guitar playing. Love the new Star One album as well.

  • Digging the vintage synth porn, Spotted an MKS-80 in there too. Cool as hell. What are you still doing with the s-5000 though? :P

  • having that kidn fo gear not only requires money...

it requires plenty of research to get to know whats good for you and what is not...

besides that you can play and make very good records!!

    congrats , loved the video.

  • Arjen A Lucassen; Still first in space!

  • Hey Arjen... when speaking of the guitar players, you forgot to mention good ol' img543.imageshack.us/img543/803/john0.jpg

  • How did you afford all of that equipment? That's thousands and thousands of dollars worth of gear! Do you really make that much money selling albums?

  • @ANOMTOfficial Oh yes, indeed. Luckily I sold a lot of CD's before the illegal downloading started! And I've still got a lot of loyal fans who still buy my stuff, I'm happy to say :-)

  • @ArjenALucassen

Do you see yourself ever re-releasing all of your other Ayreon albums on vinyl any time soon? I hear that vinyl is going to replace CD's and make artists a lot of money.

  • @ArjenALucassen I just got my first ayreon album! Definately A project and an atrist that is well worth supporting

  • @ArjenALucassen

I buy all your stuff :)

  • @ArjenALucassen I'm one :)

  • the only reason i clicked this video because i thought it was a chick playing guitar.

  • @Cbav Sorry to disappoint you, man....would it help if I shave off my goatee?

  • @ArjenALucassen HAHA! You are such a character. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks a lot!

I've noticed though that the guitar tones I tend to prefer are from guys who use power tube distortion instead (to me, it's a more organic sound), but I like yours too.

The first Star One album blew my mind, and I went crazy when I heard Star One would be releasing a second album! As I live in Singapore, no record stores carry metal CDs so my aunt is bringing me VoAMA from UK next week. Can't wait!

  • @ArjenALucassen NO!!!!!!!! You must never shave the goatee. It is the goatee in which you channel your guitar ability through!

  • 6:20 haha, very good explanation of the dark, bass sound

  • You're a guru, but i feel like i want to give you a sammich.

  • Hi Arjen! Just a question: do you use programs like Guitar Pro to write down ideas, riffs etc?

  • While hearing Star One´s Victim of the modern age I think Arjen comes from another galaxy!! What a masterpiece!

  • Hey Arjen, loving the new album! Looks from the video that you run quite a humble studio, which only makes the quality of your mixes even more impressive...do you use any acoustic/sound treatment in the room or is it just a typical room?

  • Arjen, for Guitar Rig you can dl the demo on Native Instruments website. It works as plugin but also standalone, so you can decide if it's worth 170 euro. But the best of the best in amp sim is the Fractal Axe Fx Ultra. 2.200 eur, rackable and kills the rest.

  • Hi Arjen, hoe gaat het? Did you do any post eqing on your guitarsound?

Cheers from the northcoast of germany.

  • @MrCurse9 Oh yes. Most of all I got rid of some nasty frequencies between 2 and 4k, especially on the Sansamp channels.

  • Amazing! :)

  • what model guitar is used in this video?

  • @Linqua2112 It's an Ibanez 7-string RG series.

  • @ArjenALucassen This is the most beautiful Ibanez I've ever seen. Is it a Custom Shop or a standard model ? And also can you please inform us on the pick-ups ? Thank you.

  • Hi Arjen...loving the new CD...the guitars sound amazing as always :)

  • Pure gold this video Arjen, it's difficult to find people that share this kind of knowledge. Thanks!

  • Hey Arjen, very nice video, thanks for uploading, I have a some little question, what do you think about Guitar Rig software?

  • @astrape I haven't tried it yet, my version of Protools is just to damn old! But I will update soon and definitely try it out.

  • Thank you for the insight. I use the exact same pod as well and dialed in your settings from (I think) the clip you had with "Actual Fantasy Revisted". I blend the rectifier with the jcm 800 and get a similar tone! One question, I noticed on the Trailer for the CD, you had something tied around the top of the neck by the headstock. Is that to deaden any unwanted string noise? Thank you!

  • @jvayne Right...it's one of Lori's socks :-)

  • Love that "Chaos" part at the beginning. Thank you for sharing this material, can't wait to get my hands on the new Star One album :)

  • Though I didn't quite get about the number of guitar tracks. He says he's got 6 tracks (3 left, 3 right) of SansAmp, Bogner and Marshall. But then he must be recording each mic separately. That will give 18 total tracks (left: 3 amps x 3 mics; right : 3 amps x 3 mics). I don't think he blends all 3 mics into a single track.

  • @DimeStuff You're right of course! Sorry for being unclear there...

  • I love the tech-talk stuff like this.

Arjen has one of my favourite guitar sounds out there, along with the incomparable Devin Townsend.

  • @RolandDeschain1 agree!!

  • Comment removed

  • Epic.

  • What Marshall is that? This guy is my fucking hero.

  • @hartajpwns703 It's a Marshall MK2, given to me by Accept when I played with them back in the 90's. It's been modified by someone in Germany, don't know his name...

  • 101 likes vs 0 dislikes, wohoooooooo

  • Amazing video Arjen! Thanks for sharing! Really looking forward to the new album :) Can't wait!!!

  • truly amazing, people like you are why I keep playing, thanks so much for the insight into your methods. YOU ARE AWESOME !!

  • Hmm... I don't really give a crap about technical competence, doesn't matter if the mood (or in most guitar heroes case the singer) sucks, and the purpose of the song is to put the guitarist into spotlight. I think your video is good evidence how you put hell of a work, to serve the sound, melody and atmosphere of the song - and therefor the big picture you mentioned. So you became one of the very bests anyways :) ... though I have no complaints about your playing skills !!! ;)

  • The world lost a shredder but won an incredible songwriter... I like the "why bother"... so said Michael Mc Kean about Malmsteem in the making of RJ Dio "Stars".

  • @2manynotes Haha, indeed! Might as well use it as a coffee table :-)

  • Thank you for sharing your secret weapons! Not many do, that's what really sets you apart man.

  • Great tips :)

  • Really interesting clip, Arjen!

  • Gaaf dat met die microfoons ga ik binnen kort uitproberen, dankjewel Arjen!

  • Wow, there's a LOT of work to it... And knowing you being a real perfectionist... Did you ever get some sleep during the process of making the album? ;-)

I think the album will blow Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen ànd Yngwie Malmsteen away!!

  • Very interesting vid! Thanx and ... can you tell us a little bit more about your recording tricks ;-) For a very brutal guitarsound just "in the box" I use the NI GuitarRig 4 with the additional plugin called "Rammfire". It´s awesome! Do you know it? If not, check this out!

  • @ROCKXX74 Thanks for the tips! Hmm...Rammfire...that sounds interesting :-)

  • you're my herooooo

  • Arjen are you an alien??

  • holy crap, ARJEN SOLOING? :D love it man!

  • I love you Arjen, I really do. You compose such amazing music, yet you are such a joke =]

  • awesome! UBERSHALL!!! haha. btw arjen, i think something isnt going right with your videos/subscribers. i check my subscriptions everyday, and more often than not its multiple times a day, and this video was uploaded 4 days ago it says, and ive only just seen it in my subscriptions. this happened a few times with your other videos like the giveaways etc

  • @Linqua2112 Arjen (or his PM Lori) usually uploads video's privately, then they switch them to public when they are ready to be viewed :)

  • 5cm is about 2 inches. if someone wants a more exact imperial measurement... look it up yourself

  • Kikke!!

  • Damn; het blijft goed :) Thanks voor die filmpjes!

  • thumbs up who wants to see more videos like this!!! ;)))

Thank you Arjen for your music))

  • hahaha "Chaos: take one... thousand threehundered eighty-five" as always brilliant / informative to listen to and to look at!

  • @ginkarasu To be honest, it DID take a lot of takes before I got it right!

  • @ArjenALucassen playing in front of a camera makes me slip up too. But much worse as I'm merely an amateur :-P

  • Very interesting "info-mercial" . Could listen/watch this stuff for hours. Waiting for the album to be delivered to Scotland.

  • Awesome video! Thank you very much, Arjen!

  • I could watch stuff like this for hours! Thanks Arjen.

  • Cool video. Knowing how much thought and work goes into a guitar sound makes it sound even better!

  • Nice!

  • Great musician- composer, guitar player and above all- super nice guy!!!! Can't wait for My signed Star One!!!

  • Thank you, Arjen! Very, very helpful for us with homestudios.

  • Sick stuff Arjen!

The third mic ideas is... interesting.

    More of this please! :D

  • bah, Arjen you just might be the best guitar player for some of us! Being that humble just increased my admiration towards you!

btw When are we going to get guitar tabs for the new album??

  • @67588wolf123 I can't read or write music/scores/tabs, sorry...

  • Comment removed

  • @darthedvin Oh no, that's not what I meant, ha! I meant I didn't get paid to say all this stuff :-) But I don't mind people buying the album of course, hehe...

  • you are the gratest guitarist/composer/thinker/ayreon on earth!!!!!!

  • Thanks for sharing, Arjen! :)

  • Owh hell yeah!!! Your good... TEACH IT ME!!!!

  • Love it! :D

Even though I don't play electric guitars myself, seeing (not to mention HEARING) Arjen guide one through truly is inspiring..!

  • Brutal!

  • I enjoy the Bogner's tone. That is THE tone I am looking for.

  • mind=blown
