  • Did anyone watch the follow up to Pedigree Dogs Exposed this week? I can't believe that the KC has only just banned inbreeding. Reason? The information wasn't out there. Um, you only need a little intelligence to know that breeding siblings and parents with children results in the magnification of faults that lead to debilitating conditions that can be fatal to poor dogs. I also found it disgusting that a ridge back breeder was 'culling' pups that didn't have a ridge! Why not sell them as pets?

  • this is a total propaganda video for the Kennel club, total rubbish, it has not changed the breed standards, and it winner from crufts in 2011 in the bulldog was a complete unhealthy joke.

  • im glad at last dog breeding and showing has been shaken up and finally the dogs health and welfare is in the forefront, i have strong doubts some of the oldschool judges will embrace the new standards but hpefully a new generation of dog lovers will fill the dog world instead of these snobbish stuck in their way nazis that you often encounter in the dog showing world.

  • this is very good video, cant agree with you more @ImFlareonBitch, i also bought German Shepherd girl, and thinking about breeding her, but just to improve breed, there is no way im going to breed her, if she is not healthy, as much as i love her, and i would like to have her future pups. Breeing should not be, just to put two dogs together and sell pups.

  • I don't care about what this video is trying to say. You cannot tell me that the show GSD is healthy, because they look nothing like a dog anymore. Not with their backs so slanted down and having to shift all their weight to their back haunches. PDE is rather extreme, but ya know what? I think they've got the right idea; I'm tired of these serious issues being buttered up and dressed real fancy to hide the nasty reality of life.

  • @Metroid4ever Define looking like a dog.

Do Dachshunds look like dogs? Do Bulldogs look like dogs? Do PBGVs look like dogs? Do Basset Hounds look like dogs? Do Mastiffs look like dogs? Do Greyhounds look like dogs?

  • @ImFlareonBitch

They're dogs. There's plenty of DNA proof that they belong to the canine family. What I'm saying is that man has ruined many dog breeds, for conformation and appearance. When instead, dogs should be bred for function and health.

  • @Metroid4ever I see. German Shepherds take a lot of heat. IMO, there are many breeds that are much less healthy overall that take a lot less heat just because German Shepherds are different. Recently in American lines, you will notice a lot fewer wobblers winning the ring - they're still bred for angulation, but people are actively choosing healthier dogs. As for German lines, I'm not sure. The ones on PDE were west German and their walking certainly did look terrible.

  • @ImFlareonBitch

I don't know much about European lines, but I still want to see changes in the supposed breed standard. I think it's ridiculous that breeders will say that the working GSD is not correct, cause it actually is. Imo at least. It looks more like its ancestor, the wolf.

But the breeds you mentioned...yeah. I don't know much about PBGVs, cause they're not a breed of interest, but I just think there needs to be much stricter rules with dog breeding.

  • @ImFlareonBitch

I dunno. Unfortunately, it's really hard to change the minds of a breeder who claims to be the best for the breed. So in turn, the dogs just suffer. Those breeders are no different than the Nazis from the WW II days. Extreme to compare them to that, but if you think about it, dog breeding is eugenics.

  • @Metroid4ever And? All animal breeding is 'eugenics.' That doesn't mean it's bad, and it's nothing like the Nazis. Had Hitler done nothing but encourage certain people to have offspring with certain other people, he never would have gone down in history the way he did. Eugenics was not the terrible thing in the deal.. murdering everybody that didn't fit his bill was.

People still practice eugenics. Look at sperm banks. Women pick based on physical characteristics, health, and personality.

  • @ImFlareonBitch

    Ah, but when breeding becomes a sport and a means of a fashion show, that's where I have a problem. Sorry, Eugenics wasn't the right word for this matter. xD;;

  • @Metroid4ever No you were correct there's a direct link between the Eugenics movement and these criminals. I can't see them reversing decades of that bizarre and totally ignorant approach to genetics in a couple of years. The damaging practices were being used in 2008 are they telling us that they've changes in a couple of years ? I'm not buying it.

  • @TelecasterLPGTop I will not deny the fact that I am totally ignorant on just everything eugenics entails, but from my understanding, part of it is encouraging breeding based on known genetic factors to enhance the offspring. These factors could range from health, personality, temperament, and physical features. How is that 'criminal'?

Also, wobbling legs in the GSD is because the stifle is too long for the ligaments to support, not malformed hips. PDE was one-sided propaganda as well.

  • @Metroid4ever I somewhat agree. I think conformation shows have their place, but I do believe that breeders should put more emphasis on working ability and temperament. Personally, I think conformation should be about outward physical characteristics and breeders should be encouraged more to do the health testing themselves - more time should be spent educating the general public (their buyers) on just what to look for.

  • I agree with Kelly30C, talk about a load of spin. If dogs health and welfare was truly a priority for the Kennel Club they would have made sure of that and worked towards that goal a long time ago! Not living in a bubble and then REACTING to public opinion after Pedigree Dogs Exposed, first by attacking it, ignoring it and basically claiming everything is okay and on some occasions lying. Clearly they are trying to save face and they're doing it through PR...

  • The reason it won't get on TV is that this video, whilst there's some good in it, is also a load of spin. It would only get on TV if they paid for a 28 minute ad slot. It doesn't deal with all the problems head on, it isn't honest - their large PR/Marketing team need to do better. Only the supporters of the KC buy it, because they live and breathe the KC and don't see that the RSPCA are right, everyone else sees this for what it is - spin.

  • This is what the American Kennel Club MUST strive for!

  • If only the AKC would get on board with Health testing and verifiable test results too.. but until they start to require Health Testing and ethical breeding practices and stop supporting and registering anything and everything including Puppy Mill & pet shops dogs from untested parents- the AKC is a worthless and even harmful organization!

  • @CedarwoodCotons The AKC is not a worthless or harmful organization. The AKC has the "AKC Canine Health Foundation" an organization that researches the health issues and genetic problems in dogs and people. AKC even has dog breed rescues and the "AKC Canine Partners" which gives all sorts of rights and benefits to mix breed dogs of all kinds.

    Read up on it.

  • Why don't the KC disassociate themselves completely from breeders/judges that don't make welfare their priority? Why haven't they been able to forge a successful working relationship with the RSPCA? Why do they recommend getting a puppy from one of their accredited breeders as a solution to puppy farming, what about getting a rescue puppy as another valid solution? Why do they have offices next to the Ritz, why not move to cheaper offices in order to invest in genuine solutions to poor welfare?

  • It's good to see that the KC are trying to make changes. Perhaps the KC is now ready to see that it is time they not only recorded the birth of dogs but also their death and cause of death. It is only with this information that breeders will really be aware of the scale and depth of the health problems that their breed is experiencing.

  • Excellent information. The AKC needs to follow suit :-)

  • @brendy59 So does the CKC!

  • Brilliant video, it needs to be put on the BBC to reach a wider audience.

  • @jazz2012 Personally I think the idea of laying down a blueprint or a 'standard' of what a dog should look like is criminally insane. Why are people so hell bent of keeping certain traits?

I understand the KC have refused to appear on the follow up to 'Pedigree dogs exposed'. Why? since they've just spent 27:53 telling me how great they are? Youre right about one thing. They neglect to mention that they are the ones that have caused all these problems in the first place.

  • @TeifiValley123 Absolutely. I worked for an animal organisation and most other groups, if not all, are utterly opposed to the KC's ideals and ideas. The expose about pedigree dogs was not doctored to make the KC look bad, it was a truthful piece of work and unlike the KC the programme makers had nothing to gain or lose from it. If the KC felt it was biased you'd think they'd be knocking down the door of the BBC to get their point across and to show how they've changed.

  • Excellently produced. Relevant issues. Too long (27 + minutes) and too late (after Pedigree Dogs Exposed) to have much effect on the important dog buying target group, I fear. The other target group, the breeders, unfortunalely will go on as if nothing has happened, like they have done for the past 150 years.

  • Wonderful video with a great message. The KC's common-sense responses to all of the troubles surrounding dogs align perfectly with what I've been saying all along. Good work, and all the dogs thank you, too.

  • Such a good video - needs wider covererage.

  • Wonderful. This represents the vision & scope of practical and clinical research that can yield positive effects for years. The Kennel Club canine health research division is truly a positive example for all clubs. Special thanks to the club & especially the academics that dedicated their life's work to the health of our dogs.

  • Those Neos are looking good (compared to the Mastini at Crufts 2011... let's wait and see how they'll look this year), and I like that Bulldog breeder.

But, at 17:00 - That, I'm afraid, is just a "phantom regulation".

They will not register a THIRD c-section if the bitch has already had two, UNLESS it is for welfare concerns. So, a breeder can say "But she'll die if I don't make this c-section!" ...and the KC will register the pups. Nothing changed.

  • Right now it needs to be on prime time TV.

  • this is fantastic, and i agree with everything that the kennel club are trying to issue

  • This needs to be presented on the media that reaches most homes..television .

  • @pinkydibs We'd love to see this on general TV but it’s very difficult to get balanced or good news stories onto national TV, which has to maintain the interest of a very wide audience. However, we're in discussion with various people who may be interested in spreading the word about the film and more updates will follow about engaging the general public! For now help us to spread the word by Facebooking and tweeting links to the film so that it gets widespread currency online.
