I've been watching Matlock Police for the past few weeks, and I've really enjoyed the show. What year was this? The show I've been watching was in living colour, this appears to be in black and white.
@Seattlecarnut The first episode was broadcast in Melbourne on 22 February 1971. Initially filmed in black and white, the series switched to colour in episode 162. Matlock Police was cancelled in 1975 after 229 episodes had been produced
@mike10101a Ok. Why do you reckon that is, that the show was cancelled when it was? I'm too young to remember the early shows like Matlock Police. I'm glad to see they've been posted on websites like YouTube. That way everyone can go back and watch an episode and enjoy. :)
@Seattlecarnut It was only made by Channel0/10 to compete with Channel 7's Homicide (1964-1976) and Channel 9's Division 4 (1969-1976). There was no point continuing with the series when its competitors (all produced by Hector Crawford) were axed. The brief compromise for fans was the spin off series Solo One which lasted 1 season. The B&W episodes are occasionally shown on the regional WIN network, but the poor quality of the B&W masters means that city based networks want show them.
@Seattlecarnut Well there are B&W episodes of "Homicide australian tv series" and Division 4 on YouTube so take a peek. You will see a cross over of actors between all of the series produced by crawfords.
All the cop shows back then featured Victoria Police. What a great theme and intro and to see cops smiling and having a good time and being nice, thats what the job should really be about.
@idak12 Yes idak12. If I were to be hauled away by the police I think it would be and look cool in the back of a Monaro. And If I were a cop a Monaro GTS would be cool to patrol around in :)
Brilliant! Was driving past Ringwood Cop Shop the other day and its gone!! Well its not gone, but there's a new police station there. Still the same 'shape' but a brand new building! Does anyone know where these 'opening' shots were filmed? Obviously the station is Ringwood Police Station, but what about the very start where the Monaro is approaching the 'T' intersection, and the final scene where they open to an aerial shot of 'Matlock'?? I am very facsinated with Matlock!
It was on TV at night around 8.30 just as I as a 6 or 8 year old was going to bed. Obviously I wasn't allowed to watch it but I wouldn't go to bed until I heard the music, so it still has a haunting quality for me to this day. Same thing with Homicide and Division 4 - I love the themes to all of them. Thanks - you're work in this area is invaluable.
1" type C open reel videotape master - however it was transfered at the time poorly on an early 80's vidicon tube type telecine chain, which prevents it reaching its full potential quality wise
@austvarchive Can you tell me where the first part of this opening was filmed, where the car is driving along the road approaching the intersection..It looks like Rowville-Ferntree Gully area??
@peecee1384 You never know, someone might buy the right's and make a new Matlock. and still retain the original music score - now that would be fun! Its actually crossed my mind recently to mentiokn it to a producer I know. That would go down pretty well in 2010 I think, instead of a Monaro, there could be an SV6 Commodore as well as the police motorbike! All new characters!
I wonder which outer suburb in melbourne (which is prolly an inner suburb by now) that aeria pic was of (unless its some country town)....

@mike10101a I've watched Matlock Police, and I've seen some of the same actors and actresses in both shows.

It must have been hard to bundle the bad guys into the back of a two door Monaro cop car.
