Are you serious? It's a very common problem for a lot of drummers, especially beginners to get carpel syndrome of tendinitis because you're holding your sticks wrong and using too much vertical movement over horizontal movement. I'm a guitarist myself, holding a guitar pick is one of the hardest things figuring out when it comes down to pure technique and you can get damaged if you don't hold it correctly. I figure holding your drumsticks is equally important, don't you agree?
Well, i played guitar 4 years and played rockband for a few months before i bought a drumset, which i play almost everyday for the past couple years, so no one taught me how to hold sticks or picks, and according to my other musician freinds, i'm pretty good at both.
If you're 7, yeah this vid will help, but if you're 12 or older then after looking at how everyone else holds thier sticks, it shouldn't be that hard.

Basic rock drumming, I like to call it, rock drumming 101, the basics(A little redundant don't you think?) and that's umm.... basically how you're suppose to hold a drumstick, I guess.....and that's a terrible way to do your strokes...
this is wrong , you want to find the balance point on both sticks and I would advocate that so call handle bar grip for match grip or the right hand in traditional it allows the stick to bounce.

hey good vid, but something that bothers me like crazy is when I hold it, People say to put the stick on the first knuckle of ur finger. I tend to hold it on the 2nd knuckle and when i play fast or for a very long time, my skin peels and it starts to hurt. when I try to hold it on the first knuckle, it slides back to the 2nd knuckle by it self. THIS REALLY BOTHERS Me, SOMEONE HELP!!

Watch his fingers and thumb shift around to get into the "correct" grip and he doesnt' tell you what he is doing. He doesn't even mention holding the stick in the first knuckle groove of your index finger (which he is doing by the time he rotates his hand around).

It's all about being relaxed and not choking the stick. If you do this you won't experience fatigue as much after a show plus you achieve a killer overall drum/cymbal sound.
He also does a great vid on how to drink a glass of water. "Ok, hold your left hand like you're giving a thumbs up. If you do it thumbs down, you'll spill your water, man. Ok, now extend your fingers slowly, like this, until they're out facing the wall of your stepdad's back room. Put the thumb down as if you're acting normally. i'm sorry to say but he's holding them wrong u must hold the stick to get the best resonance from the membrane( hold it too short or too long and it won't bounce corectly), it can't be the same lenght for all people.some have more soft hands , some have more hard hands, some have more greasy or sweaty hands...u must find the right spot ... just place your hand holding the stick so it rests on your pointer finger and the drumm then move it forward or backward until it bounces the way you like

Wood tips splinter, and cause further damage to all parts of your drum kit. Nylon tips don't do that. The only possible advantage of wood is the sound, nylon doesn't always sound the same.

There IS a proper technique that needs to be learned. Once it is learned, the drummer can fit that technique to their hand. But essentially, it's the same.

You should have to have any type of training for holding your sticks. When I first learned how to play, my instructor told me to hold them the way I feel the most comfortable.
The only type of training you should need is for traditional grip, & proper wrist motion. The rest is somewhat self-explanatory.
Grip is very important, your comment is completely ignorant. If your grip is not somewhat similar to this (as a basic grip) your inhibiting what your hand is capable of doing. The "most comfortable" way could easily be the way that prevents the stick from rebounding, which is the worst way to hold a drumstick. It's all about making the stick do most of the work, so holding it any way you please is a bad attitude if you want to get the most out of technique and your playing...
Hence when I said, "When I first learned how to play..." I have since changed my grip. I do agree that grip is VERY important, but, truthfully, you should be less worried about hand-technique starting out & more worried about timing & accuracy.
Well you should have made that clear, instead of starting out writing "You shouldn't have to have any type of training for holding the sticks"!! Your whole comment was implying the general fact that grip isn't important and the rest is "self-explanatory". Even when your starting out it is important to teach grip. However, no instructor should expect a student to pick it up comprehensively until after a month or 2 really...
Because improper technique can cause problems, pain, a bad sound, and most importantly, lack of control of the stick. Proper drumstick technique was invented for a reason.
It should also be noted that something not mentioned in this video is that you should leave no gap between your thumb and index finger. The knuckle of your thumb should be glued to the base knuckle of your index finger.
the only problem with the traditional grip is that is was originally used to play a drum at your side technology has changed and it is inefficient to play that way.
The same holds true for classical guitar there are a lot of people who prefer a certain hand technique that produces a bad tone and can really fuck up your wrist because that was THE way to play.
The guy giving the lesson is just assuming that most people learning drums want to learn rock/ blues and this is the best technique.
i think that this video is very helpful for amateur drummers, i do not see your problem with someone who is trying to help the beginners unlike yourselves who are virtually ripping this person apart !

There IS a proper technique that needs to be learned. Once it is learned, the drummer can fit that technique to their hand. But essentially, it's the same.

You should have to have any type of training for holding your sticks. When I first learned how to play, my instructor told me to hold them the way I feel the most comfortable.
The only type of training you should need is for traditional grip, & proper wrist motion. The rest is somewhat self-explanatory.

Grip is very important, your comment is completely ignorant. If your grip is not somewhat similar to this (as a basic grip) your inhibiting what your hand is capable of doing. The "most comfortable" way could easily be the way that prevents the stick from rebounding, which is the worst way to hold a drumstick. It's all about making the stick do most of the work, so holding it any way you please is a bad attitude if you want to get the most out of technique and your playing...

Hence when I said, "When I first learned how to play..." I have since changed my grip. I do agree that grip is VERY important, but, truthfully, you should be less worried about hand-technique starting out & more worried about timing & accuracy.

Your whole comment was implying the general fact that grip isn't important and the rest is "self-explanatory". Even when your starting out it is important to teach grip. However, no instructor should expect a student to pick it up comprehensively until after a month or 2 really...

Because improper technique can cause problems, pain, a bad sound, and most importantly, lack of control of the stick. Proper drumstick technique was invented for a reason.
It should also be noted that something not mentioned in this video is that you should leave no gap between your thumb and index finger. The knuckle of your thumb should be glued to the base knuckle of your index finger.

the only problem with the traditional grip is that is was originally used to play a drum at your side technology has changed and it is inefficient to play that way.
The same holds true for classical guitar there are a lot of people who prefer a certain hand technique that produces a bad tone and can really fuck up your wrist because that was THE way to play.
The guy giving the lesson is just assuming that most people learning drums want to learn rock/ blues and this is the best technique.

Wow, this is the most BASIC thing i have ever seen. You show us the most retarded way to hold the stick, and that takes a billion fricken years just to do that! Than as soon as you lower the stick to the snare drum, you moved all your fingers. Wow. All you have to do is grab the stick where it feels right to you, and then you play. If it doesn't feel right, why the hell would I do that? Everyone holds the stick differently, because drumming is UNIQUE! You aren't an expert.
