Compared with The Shadows' version, this is sleep-inducing and very cheesy. No drama at all. The image evoked by the Shadows' version of an Apache brave riding his horse relentlessly across the dry New Mexico landscape is replaced by one of an ageing warrior plodding across the plains and finally falling dead from his horse. Jorgen Ingmann also murders the song, with the Apache warrior eventually expiring from sheer boredom.
I "learned" to play this wonderful tune on my cousins TIN guitar in 1970...........It sounded bloody aweful BUT, started me on my guitar playing "career". And no, I could not play Quartermasters Stores on the tin guitar:). The my mum got me a "real" guitar in1971...........Things went downhill from there (giggle).....
Have always wanted to hear this version, so thanks for it. It does have a certain charm. It certainly plods compared to the Shadows' version.
The Shadows had the driving bass and rhythm guitar, thoughtful drumming, and of course, Hank Marvin's command of his guitar effects, and brilliant ability to sell a melody -- I believe Cliff also plays bongo on the track. This song influenced so many musos and bands. I always hear Hank Marvin's style in Mark Knopfler's playing.
Bert Weedon was the first guitarist to record Apache, Jerry Lordan was unhappy with the result, "All the drama of the melody had gone." Meanwhile, The Shadows needed a b side for "Quartermasster's Stores" and while on a package tour with Jerry Lordan - "Apache" was suggested. Norrie Paramours daughter suggested that Apache should be the A side. Top Rank rushed out Bert's version which reached No. 24 - He later recorded 2 new versions for Rocking at the roundhouse and 22 Golden Guitar greats lps
MARTY VAlentine.. uh.. I hate to burst yer bubble... BUT- I am Pretty sure the great Danish Guitar player Jorgen Ingmann did this b4 ANY of these guys.. and, IMHO, in a superior version.. this is
a lil' corny, with the flute player blowing all over the place on this..
@timjmoran No mate, you are too poorly-informed to burst any bubbles. Martyvalentine was completely accurate. You really should check your facts before making such comments!
@timjmoran He didn't do it first but he did it best as far as I'm concerned. I've never understood the Brit's love for the Shadow's version over Ingmann's. This version just plain rots.
@ElComadreja777 So Why are The Shadows still playing to packed venues. Apache was written for the Shadows it was at no 1 for 5 weeks no one has ever got near their version, where is Jørgen Ingmann now ? where are the Ventures ?
@fincaman2 I have no idea what Ingmann is up to these days and I'll be the first to admit that except for "Apache" and the flip "Echo Boogie" his catalogue dissapoints. This was the version we heard here in the states and along with The Ventures "Walk, Don't Run" and The Virtues "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" were the reasons I started to play. So I guess I'll always prefer the Ingmann. The Ventures are still touring and recording and yes, their version is shit compared to either JI or the Shads.
@mikefox1974 Bert's version of Apache is easily available on several CD re-releases or compilations. His version is slower than the one recorded by the Shadows and although it's almost the same in every respect apart from that, it lacks the excitement of Marvin's version. (Out of interest, I loaded the CD track into one of my favourite sound editors and played it at 150% speed without altering the pitch - that brought it much closer to the Shadow's version.)
this is a terrible version of Apache, Bert should have binned this.

Why place quotation marks around his name? That's what it is: his name! Do you put them around your own name?

Actually Bert Weedon recorded the first version in May of 1960, and the Shadows recorded the 2nd version in July of 1960.

I suppose in them days, this version would have been a great hit, if THE SHADOWS had not came out earlier with a better version.
THE SHADOWS version is still played and loved today. What happened to Bert's version?.

It was in fact Norrie Paramours eldest teenage daughter who finally convinced them all that 'Apache' should be the 'A' side.
