Thank you Johnny Cash for making a badass version of this song instead of this amazingly stupid shit that isn't even close to the meaning of the song.
@tjstevens74 People like you are funny. You're so arrogant that you don't understand the concept of music.
You like certain things, congratulations. Others like other things, Congratulations to them. If you don't like a certain style, don't listen to it, it's as simple as that people.
No need to get a bad boo boo and raised blood pressure by saying "stupid shit ass fuck fuck blat blat man." about a song. It's a song, it's released, you don't like it? Get over it.
@tjstevens74 Meaning of the song?? Do you ever enjoy music without thinking too deeply into it? I'm guessing so, because your comment leads me to believe your thought process is pretty damn shallow. Your age doesn't have anything to do with it when I tell you "grow the fuck up".
djhowtoo, if he were a beastie boy, he would have been an entirely different style of music. Moby has his OWN style, as do the Beastie Boys. I don't like the Beastie Boys style. So, the comparison is apples to oranges there...Moby, by the way, is MUCH more talented in his own right than the Beastie Boys.
This song has been covered by EVERYONE...people...not only do some of you need to learn to "internet" (@akidforever92), but some of you need to learn more about music history...this is not only a folk song, it's an African Slave song....Moby has ALWAYS contributed some of his recording to old Black Gospel...so, before anyone gets offended in my remark, you should become a better fan of Moby and get to know HIS legacy first...He is a class act.
@ninik06 Me too! But I love the other versions! I saw True Grit (AMAZING btw) and I heard it in the credits and I go, "JOHNY CASH!". Then I noticed that Moby did this song too! Usually I hate remakes of songs, but THIS is an exception.
I agree this isn't as good as Cash's version, but given that it's probably better than versions done by Elvis and Tom Jones, let's give him some credit.
Great song however Cash's is too much of a classic to beat. The Cash music video is one of the best i have ever seen. For everyone who wants to hear cash's version: God will cut you down-Johnny Cash
@strokez1 the part at the beginning is just F & A # then F# & B then hold it and replace the B with an A and then repeat that same pattern...the little melody thing is just F# A# A B E and repeated over and over again... you can figure out the rhythm and which octave to play it in all by yourself...
@akidforever92 I would add that the sample vocals that Moby uses are from a 1943 recording. Johnny Cash was 11 when those vocals were recorded. Do you also think that your mom wrote the "Happy Birthday to You" song because she's the first person you heard sing it?
I grew up on this album. This is my favorite song. I remember when I was a little kid and my mom put it on the stereo and I danced. I was like 5, but I remember it like it was yesterday. I would "sing" the words but I didn't know, but I loved it. I still do and it brings a tear to my eye because these days the world is starting to bear down on me, and I remember the bliss I felt when I was a kid. All because of this song.
@Gatorbait66600 The same here... "Play" made my childhood. I got this CD when it first came out... I must've been like 6 or 7 at the time, and I remember just sitting around all the time listening to it on my portable CD player and taking it wherever... Moby was the first musical influence I really had and I will always hold a place in my heart for "Play" and "18"...
I was singing this song at school people were all, "You have a horrible taste of music! It's gross. Here listen to Jason Derulo!" I mind-vomited.
I love Moby, just because they havne't heard of it doesn't mean it's bad. I mean, go out there and listen to other stuff other than what some channels on the radio play! I have NEVER heard this song on the radio. I wish I could.
A man was asking another man why he was a vegan. The vegan man said, "I don't eat anything with eyes." The other man replied, "Oh, yeah? What about your wife?"
My mother introduced me to this amazing artist. I fell in love with his music. But, I lost the Mody disk I had in my mom's old car and I was heart broken. I'm so glad other's think he's just astounding. Run-on!
