The electronics in the Apollo spacecraft generated a significant amount of heat and the solar shielding was designed with that in mind. When the electronics were powered off during Apollo 13, a major internal heat source was removed. Therefore, the shield was overcompensating. The capsule radiated more heat than it absorbed, causing the interior of the craft to become cold. Skylab became hot because the missing solar shield caused the capsule to absorb more heat than it radiated.

The answer is... Yes, if the air conditioning is turned off, then the interior heats up to 250 degrees due to the LACK of area to dump any residual heat! The heat is trapped inside the capsule.

Therefore, as stated. with Apollo 13 in direct sunlight during its entire voyage, it does get broiling inside. Bean was absolutely right!

And the capsule was razor thin to meet weight requirements, not this great conglomeration of layers. Take a look at one when you get to the Smithsonian for proof...

Actually it doesn't, the ship reflects the heat from the sun, and it radiates any of the heat from the inside out. With only three bodies producing a minimal amount of heat, it gets very cold.

...given this, it seems entirely plausible to me that, with all the electrical equipment shut down and thus just 3 bodies toheat the craft, the interior would get cold, even in the sunlight. The LM was built in a similar way, with additional reflective material added, as can be seen in the photos. I Google'd for info on the construction of the apollo spacecraft - very interesting what you can find out there, never mind hard copy info in books.

The outer layer of the Command Module was highly reflective, thus reflecting a large proportion of the solar radiation back into space. Below it was a layer of phenolic insulation, below which was the pressure vessel the astronauts lived in. Thus, conduction of heat from outside to inside was significantly reduced. Cooling systems meant the interior was actively cooled to protect the electrical equipment. In additon, the spacecraft was rolled, about 1 rev per minute, to even out solar heating...

Yet another possibility is that the temperature would increase if the front of the LM was permanently facing the Sun. Note that this is a configuration that never occured for long periods in flight.

One answer : they had to do PTC in order to protect the CM heat shield. I presume this was also true for Apollo 13. Perhaps by doing that it prevented the LM from getting hot.

As for the space being cold or not. I would expect that since there's "nothing" in space, that the temperature would be very cold to someone taking off his spacesuit because the heat of the body would dissipate in the cosmos to fill in the space at least when not being in front of the Sun. I've seen all the SCFilms DVD sets. Here sixteen different camera angles of the rocket launch but not one ever of the inside of the cabin.

Heres John Glen, Soyuz, STS Astros ALL FILMED inside the cabin as the rocket launched.

Of course, a very good reason for not filming could be that a camera could shake loose and fall and injure an astronaut. A one pound camera at 5 or 6 g could do some real damage.
