  • thanks a ton. I have a 55 lb. recurve, so it's 'traditional' except it's a TD and it's got a camo pattern and riser made to put mods on... it shoots great except it's super loud. hence the silencers. again, thanks

P.S. what song is this? it's really awesome.

  • @MrDutchjake If it doesn't have wheels on it it's a "traditional" bow :-)) The background song is a Youtube swap audio. Don't remember what it is as I add the audio swap 3 years ago, sorry

  • @Woodenarrows I know the difference between a compound, long, and recurve, been shooting for 3ish years. what I mean is it's traditional, but not really. I kind of wish I had bought a full wood recurve, but buying another bow at this point wouldn't be wise.

to bad about the song, but oh well :P

  • @Woodenarrows hey i made this BUT my bow string cannot split please help

  • @MrDutchjake hey did you try adjusting your brace height? i now my red stag has a sharp snap when it's off the brace height.

  • how many times should you twist your bowstring once you put it in there? fyi im putting this on a bear compund bow at 65 lb pull

  • @m1garand77 Basicly you just retwist it back to where it was before you opened it to insert the string puff. Of course if your string is a little too long to start with, you can twist it up more to shorten it.

  • @Woodenarrows and this will work with my compund bow right wool isnt just for traditionals?

  • @m1garand77 Yes, it will. I just watched a video a couple of weeks ago where the fellow had made them for his compound bow. Wish I could remember, I'd list the link.

  • Does synthetic wool works?

    I could't find 100% wool for sale.

  • @leohaharod You can make a string puff from the synthetics but they won't have the durability, body or water repellency of natural wool. It’s worth a go to see if you like them but… keep in mind that real, 100% natural wool will give you a much better product.

  • You siolved a problem for me--thanks!

  • @huntryx1 You're welcome. Glad the video was of some help.

  • The old Fred Bear Kodiak Hunter! I picked one of those up last summer and have been practicing for over an hour a day for bow season, which starts in 6 weeks. I've only ever killed 3 deer with a bow, none in the traditional manner. I'm going for broke this year though! Thanks for the nice tutorial, I hate the rubber ones that tie around the string. Once you take them off you have to buy more! Thanks a million, Woodenarrows!

  • @robbie8600 I like the old Bear bows. Good luck with this years hunting season and thanks for watching/commenting.

  • O ok thanks. Keep stickn em!

  • Traditional to who ,you ....me maby ,i like the fact u stress tradition... But what do u exactly mean?

  • @ThePaiuteNative Meaning meant for stick bows (recurves, longbows and primitive bows), not compound bows.

  • Excellent video, I had no trouble finding 100 % wool yard although there were a lot more choices in the synthetic brands. I found some that is actually camo in color, green, brown, and black all in the same yarn. I did everything as shown in the video and came out with a very nice looking "puff" thats even camo! I enjoy watching your video's and getting ideas, and it always feels better making anything yourself!!

  • @deerhuntingboy101

it will not efffect the accuracy of your shot at all, i have a bow that has got string silencers on it allready. It is just rubber string tied in a knot on the string and it works pretty good like that. it is proberly easier to do aswell.

  • Well done...good stuff here. Thanks for sharing!

  • Aha! I finally found a use for my sheep here at the house.

  • Just bought some wool yarn to try this out. Why do you use 100% wool? What are the advantages using that over an acrylic blend? Just curious.

  • @deertracker48 Wool fluffs better than synthetics and it is naturally water repellent so they won’t be a matted mess if the conditions get a little damp. Wool is also pretty durable. I am still wearing wool shirts that are 30+ years old. The wool string puffs are the only thing I use now on all my bows. Plus, wool is just plain Traditional :-))

  • @deertracker48 I found out just recently that most of the "wool" sold today is actually acrylic, or 40-60% acrylic. Same for fleece, nowadays entirely 100% synthetic.

  • @DudeNumberOnePlus Michaels and Jo Ann both sell 100% wool yarn. I think it's Lion's Brand.

  • @deerhuntingboy101 Can't really answer that since I don't shoot compounds. However, my instinct tells me they should not affect the bow’s accuracy but they may not last as long as synthetic silencers due to the faster string speed of compound bows. However, they are cheap enough to make :)

  • @josephdeangeloverde There are 2 bows at the end so... The first bow, with the string puff closeup is a 1968 Beak Kodiak Hunter. The bow I am shooting is a 1962 Bear Kodiak.

  • Does this actually work like a real string silencer or does it just look like one?

  • @irmollaar Yes they DO work. They are real string silencers, just using natural materials.

  • @Woodenarrows thanks I tried it last night, it worked quite well, now i have to work out how many wraps i need

  • I just tried this - worked like a charm! Thanks!

  • The best video on the subject! I am going to try one on my bowstring!

  • thanks for the video.

  • great video thanks for putting it up, now I know how to do it.

  • + love the video I made some today and they work great 5/5

  • very good tutorial there, 5*

  • this also works with generic yarn, i tried it today. they dont work as well as wool but they get the job done.

  • hey man thats pretty cool they look good.

  • about how long do the scilencers last?

  • I have been making them for a couple of years now and I shoot my bows at least weekly, sometimes more. I have not had one actually wear out. I am sure they will eventually. I think the quality of your raw materials is the major factor in the durability of the silencers. If you need to replace the bowstring, sometimes the silencers are so wrapped up the bowstring and wax that you will tear them up trying to transfer them to a new string.

  • thanks .. im buying a recurve next week only 4 target shooting because in ireland bow huntings illegal ( unfortuneatly) but i still want my bow 2 be quiet

  • how would you do this with 2 colours of wool??

  • Simply substitute some of the total number of wraps with your other color(s) choices. Remember, you will be cutting the loops when you are finished so it doesnt matter that you have ends in the initial warp.

  • Very good tip, i'll use it soon. Thanks!

  • so im new to longbows and i have a 72 inch bow. i dont guite understand how you "slip the bundle on the string" could some just clarify that for me? thanks in advance:)

  • To slip the bundle on the string simply separate your bowstring strands into two bundles and then insert the tied bundle between the two bowstring bundles. After you have inserted the bundle into the string, give the bowstring a few twists on either of the string puff bundle, twisting in the same direction your string is already twisted, to lock the bundle in place. If this still is not clear let me know and I will make a short clip demonstrating this.

  • @vailmaster5 It depends... I have a recurve bow and my string is on the thin side, so i just tied it around the string, using the method grttaxi used. But if you have s thickker string, with several thick strans you can put it between them, and it i'll be tight! I hope this helps...

Oops, comment posted 9 months ago... Anyways, -Nax

  • great tip..

  • Very nice video 5*

  • good staff!

And it could be made with out any hanger and pvc pipe. Simply just using 3 fingers instead:)

    Anyway its nice video

  • That's true but I really need help when tying them up so they stay together as a neat little bundle. The jig is my third hand to hold the bundle, allowing me to use both hands to tie the knots.

  • amazing! well done my friend.have a great day! chris

  • Well done, and it works perfectly.

  • Great stuff!!!

  • very useful, thanks!!

  • this is a very nice video thank you alot!!
