don't know if you know but Prince has had some trouble with his previous record labels with the copyright and stuff, it's not actually him, but the labels that are claiming the rights for his records and even the name "Prince" as their own, taking even Prince himself out of the picture. that's what I've heard, had a cousin that worked with him.

Prince is a total asshole! He even had a video removed of a toddler dancing at a picnic with Let's Go Crazy playing in the background! How big of a jerk does a person have to be to do something like that? A pretty big one I assume. Prince will never get another fucking dime of my money and more people should boycott his new shit and stick it to him like he sticks it to his fans on a daily basis. My good friend worked with Prince in the studio on a few different occasions and Prince is pretty much all business, but I think if you asked for permission by email and presented it accordingly to him...You could play ur vid w/sound. Part #1 Thats Bullshit, Prince may own the song and the right to it...But they can't own the performance of the song. You need to look into thias further and maybe check with ascap. As long as you don't claim the song as your or the artist who is covering the song or attempt to make a profit from the Music, Youtube cannot ban/suspencd you...Look around youtube for a while...

As you can see from the description and the tags, I've credited Prince and stated that this is a cover performance. I have looked around YouTube quite a lot, and the same thing has happened to all Prince songs that have been uploaded. Universal Music Publishing has chosen to enforce their ownership of "the song", and by extension, any performance of it. Not much that I can do about that. I've just posted it on MySpace instead.

Just found this video after having my own Purple Rain clip removed. I had never heard of this Content Identification Program before!

What did I do wrong? Was I running a massive counterfeiting operation? Depriving UMP of huge revenues? No, I posted a 30 second clip of some amateurs playing this song at a Jam Night. It was certainly no threat to them if anything, it was free promotion for the song.

UMP certainly know how to endear themselves to the record buying public, dont they?

From what I've heard, it's Prince's insistence on enforcing the music publishing rights that led to this. It's become a joke to us now. If someone asks my band if we can play "Purple Rain", I usually make a wisecrack about how we're not allowed to play that song anymore.

Most SANE people are honored. Beyonce just stated in an interview that she was so happy that so may people did covers of her Single Ladies song on youtube.
