I wonder if US hadn't overthrown Mossadeq and installed the Shah, (forming the basis for '79 revolution), if US hadn't encouraged and supported Saddam in the Iran/Iraq war. Would there be a Basij? When I hear politicians talk about taking action against Iran now, I wonder will result from their actions. Last week 50 ppl died from bombs. The US needs to get out of the ME, bases and all. Interesting and informative. I can understand why different idealogical groups think they should force their views on others, and don't blame them for it. However, I think it is a misguided approach, rather you be the change you want to see in the world, you don't force that change on others. I fear rather than protecting Iran, the Basij will eventually lead to its downfall by enraging too many groups that don't see things their way, and get fed up with being forced to pretend.

Perhaps so, but you have to understand, The Basij's stance is a natural reaction to an unnatural situation. Iran being bombarded by all sorts of different forms of infiltration, I think if that was the case, such means wouldn't be preferred to repel it.

Well that's the paradox, educational institutions are often the vehicle of brainwashing. Being educated doesn't always mean you're being told the Truth or something that is Valid. most education is geared to train people so that they can Maintain the System, otherwise it has no relevance. Well first off; Iran has Turks, Baluch, Kurds, Mazandarani, Bakhtiyari, Qashqai and even Arabs and many more people who have always lived in Iran, not everyone there is Persian even if they speak the language. So sure there is history, it's there but it was never the same identical people. Islam was the most unifying element of the region, even though yes there was problems, it was their beliefs that kept them able to thrive and in this Islam played a role.
