Great ballad with a wonderful statement from the king. Sung well by Anne although she was far better singing it unaccompanied. Try it by "Sweeney's Men" Their Andy Irvine accidentally put this tune to this ballad.
Great stuff here from a singer who's became a virtual recluse I believe; I can listen to many of these English folk singers - Sandy Denny's my favourite.
Definitely better than Sandy Denny who apparently wrote a song - The pond & the stream, as a tribute to Anne Briggs. Anne has been a big influence on many including The Watersons, Bert Jansch, Pentangle, Maddy Prior etc.
@hstarr78 - Either you're unread (unlearned), or you haven't listened to much of English Folk music (let alone read any Shakespeare). My comment and use of the word was meant in the most admiring of ways. Grow up? What grow - up into a modern unforgiving, unloving, inexperienced dolt of today, under the shallow influence of man-hating liars? I love music and women universally. Get on board....
I have fifty-two Anne Briggs songs - and I'm sure there are more. Most of these are the very peak of modern woman's song in the English folk tradition; yet she hated singing in public, felt unhappy with adoration and walked away from it all.
Occasionally in life, if fortune allows, one experiences a moment where the beauty and timelessness of universal love reveals itself. Listening to Anne Briggs' recordings from forty years ago is comparable to experiencing a moment of enlightened bliss, or, in the Christian sense, of being visited by an angel of light. One only regrets not having been in the audience during her live performances of so long ago, or among her circle of friends who must now realize their fortune to have been there.
This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful melodys I've ever heard; the only thing that's brought tears to my eyes apart from the Everly's singing 'Let it be me' live.
Damn me. I want a wench like her - like Anne Briggs I mean. Life isn't complicated (or rewarding) enough, unless you have one like that to wrestle with. God forgive me, but I truly believe that after these many years. Angels like her always bring a mixed blessing - musically and otherwise; but to have looked into her eyes....Achh!
I understand You. Felt like that some years ago. Folk-singing beauty truely opened me up. Fin´amor of troubadours continues, in it´s graces as well as in it´s pains.
thanks a lot whackawhacka for posting this. i'd never even heard of anne briggs so thanks to you for changing that. its simple and disarming beauty seems to cut right through the sophistication and sham of modern life. it has a truly timeless, and touching purity to it.
As a talent,Anne was probably far greater than our beloved Sandy.
But only made a couple of albums. She beguiled everyone of note in the day,and is only forgotten now because of cloth eared pop fans who were more interested in the size of their idols flared trousers than the quality of the music!.
@neohip Au contrare, my friend, she is beloved by many and not at all forgotten. She simply chose the road less traveled for herself, eschewing commercial success which would have involved artistic compromises she refused to make. Bless her and long may she run in her remote island lifestyle. The best way to honor and help her is to buy her recordings on cd or to purchase downloads.

The purest, most uplifting healing voice I've ever heard. Thank God we have her on record.
BTW, not to speak out of turn or anything, but Janet's father's got issues. Just sayin'.

I never thought I'd see the day I'd hear a voice that could touch my beloved Sandy Denny's, but this comes wonderfully close. Absolutely gorgeous.
