I was a bit disappointed, that there is no support for DataMatrix in zbar. I found out that libdmtx can do that (for images). Though it seems to be a bit slow when there are a lot of edges in the image additional to the barcode.

pyDataMatrixScanner offers scanning from a webcam using libdmtx

Have you tried installing zbarcam on your N900 and scanning barcodes with the camera of the phone?

@KladionicaCity: yes, I had to upgrade my debian repose to use squeeze instead of the old lenny I had been using, and I had to lower the camera resolution to get it to run smoothly. But after that it worked fine.

The Maemo OS also has a pretty nice barcode reader, that I'm betting uses zbar as a back end.

zbar is not in the ports tree. :( no matter, this is really intriguing, i'm going to compile from source, or better yet, make a portfile. :D
