It's simply not considered a serious genre anymore, which is precisely why it's relegated to shows such as American Idol. It won't exactly sell gold or platina, but go ahead, try your luck ;)
@mglsantos You don't create "stars" by picking out a few girls who look good with skanky "lolita" clothes on them and then teach them the "art" of choreographed dance moves and lip-syncing. @mglsantos American pop and Korean pop are both awful for the same reasons.

I was watching this on TV just an hour ago, and I was and still disappointed. Why RANIA?! WHYY. I mean it could have been 2NE1 or SNSD really. 2NE1 can speak English fluently and when they mentioned Rania trying to go to US, this is actually happening with SNSD right now! Why choose Rania? Just too much focus on them. I was actually pretty excited when SISTAR, WG came on, well the whole Music Bank thing, and I was actually expecting maybe a bit more about SNSD going to US maybe? And talking abo
They obviously don't know much of what they're talking about if they are focussing on Rania. Out of all the KPOP idol groups that are vastly more successful? Seriously?!
@vindemiatrix they're jus telling us wht a basic idol group has to go through especially if they're starting out which gives ppl a better idea of wht it takes..
k pop is doing pretty well in the continent of asia including regions in Southeast Asia as well as South Asia(e.g.India, Nepal) & even in Muslim countries in the middle east....so why try so hard to get the approval of the west? they don't give up a fuck..atleast most of 'em don't...get on with your success in Asia..after all asia is the biggest continent in the world..that's a huge market right there..concentrate on getting even bigger in Asia..stop wasting u'r time on western markets.
it's crazy how military like the korean pop industry is..they groom/train young singers(from the age of 13-14 ) until it's time to officially debut...they live away from their families in dorms and eat and live there following rules set by the music producer. i watched BIG BANG(one of k pop's biggest boy band) documentary where they showed that....that makes it seem a little less genuine and organiz compared to other pop industries around the world.
Korean music industry is playing smart. They don't want rush would-be artists into the market for short-term success like they do in the states. (Ex: 95% of "winners" of American reality shows) Korea want long-term musical sensations and will invest a lot into making that happen.
Honestly I would rather have KPOP any day over hearing the next "American Idol Winner"...
there are quite a few succesful american idols stars who are doing quite well for themselves. Also the problem with k-pop is it becomes a formula less focused on talent and more focused on generic styles nothing original.
i love how they insert random english in their songs. is it to appeal to westerners? to Asians like to say random english words for some reason? Do they think it's cool? At least get the grammar right if it's a professional songg and all
@VictimOfBoredom I don't know about you but to my knowledge Japanese and Thais don't know shit about English. If anything, I'd expect a Japanese to know more Korean than English. Japanese are taught English in schools but yet almost NO ONE in Japan really knows English. Filipinos know English though. Nice try at being a smartass, but you failed. try again. :)
@DaFawky Sorry, but it's a FACT that Japanese and Thais are more likely to know English than Korean. This isn't really a subjective matter of opinion—go to ANY Kpop video on YouTube, and the Southeast Asians will be leaving comments in either their native languages or English—NOT Korean.
I guess me saying Europeans are more likely to speak English than Italian would also be me being a "smartass", eh?
Would I also be a "smartass" for stating the earth revolves around the sun?
@VictimOfBoredom Sorry, but Japanese are not Southeast Asian, and almost EVERY Japanese person DOES NOT know English. AT all. THAT is a definite FACT. The only people I see leaving English comments are people from the Philippines, and Asian expats from America and Australia. I'm from Hawaii and am mixed myself. I'm not foreign to anything you're talking about. over-exaggerating drama queen. LOL you act as if it's 'common sense' to know what SECOND language some country in South East asia speaks.
I wasn't referring to the Japanese when I said "Southeast Asian".
English being the most common foreign language isn't just unique to Southeast Asians and the Japanese—in case you've been living under a rock for over the past century, it's a WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON. Are you seriously unaware of the fact that people from two different non-English-speaking countries that don't speak the same language will invariably use English to communicate with each other? -_-
@VictimOfBoredom *facepalm* Why would you mention BOTH Thai AND Japanese speaking English and THEN say "Oh, well I see a lot of SOUTHEAST Asians talking in English on this website". Japanese aren't Southeast Asian, so that really contradicts what you said about Japanese knowing English. Japanese almost unanimously do not know English. In case you live in a rock, Korea is in ASIA.
@DaFawky Good grief. The second statement was a SEPARATE statement from the first. Japanese watch videos with Japanese titles and leave comments in Japanese, so I didn't include them along with Southeast Asians, who are more likely to watch videos with English titles and leave comments in English.
Almost all students graduating high school in Japan have had several years of English language education. The same cannot be said of Korean. This really isn't that controversial. -_-
@VictimOfBoredom doesn't matter if it was separate or not, it still contradicts what you said about Japanese knowing English. If they knew English like filipinos, then you'd Say "I see lots of East and Southeast Asians commenting in English." Of course they only go to Japanese videos & speak Japanese, no one in Japan knows English! LOL
AGAIN, like I said, Japanese HAVE to study English in school.. That does NOT reflect their ACTUAL knowledge of English. Most are illiterate. Not fluent at all.
@DaFawky The point was NEVER that Japanese simply "know English"—the point is that they know English MORE than they know Korean.
Americans UNDOUBTEDLY know Spanish more than they know Portuguese, but that doesn't mean Americans all use the Internet in Spanish. The same is true of the Japanese with respect to English. Southeast Asians are more likely to use English because the Internet communities in their native languages aren't as well-developed.
@VictimOfBoredom So many Japanese people don't speak English that more people would probably know Korean more than English. Saying they study English in school doesn't show anything at all. Japan is nowhere near an English country and literally has no reason to learn English. Most business affairs are with Asian neighbors. Languages most used would probably be Korean *if* anything.
@VictimOfBoredom " Are you seriously unaware of the fact that people from two different non-English-speaking countries that don't speak the same language will invariably use English to communicate with each other?"
THAT's what I'm saying! This is an AMERICAN website. Most foreign people are going to speak ENglish to each other. But on a KOREAN website, most people are going to be other Asians speaking in Korean. They appeal to other Asians more than westerners and people who aren to Asian.
@DaFawky Most leave ENGLISH comments because it's an ENGLISH website, dumbass. Of course on an AMERICAN website, people not from the US are going to speak English anyway. Most Koreans don't even use youtube, there would be NO reason that people not from Korea would be speaking Korean, unless it was with another Korean. And sorry, but most Japanese do not know English at all. If anything, a zainichi would know Korean.
@DaFawky YouTube is not an intrinsically English website—the settings can be changed to any of dozens of languages, and of course video titles and video comments can be in whatever language the uploaders and commenters want. -_-
@VictimOfBoredom -____- that goes for ANY website. But intrinsically it is by default an English website, as it is made by Americans. That is why most users here are going to know English or be from an English country.
@DaFawky YouTube is the third-most-popular website in Thailand and the fourth-most-popular website in both Indonesia and Japan (source: Alexa). According to your claim that only people who know English are going to visit YouTube, that PROVES that knowing English is common amongst Thais, Indonesians, and Japanese. THANK YOU!
@VictimOfBoredom That doesn't prove shit. There's a difference between "Youtube is the third most popular website in Thailand" and "Thailand is the third-most-popular country to use Youtube". So my comment about most youtube users knowing English or being from an English speaking country is still true. Most thais do not know English. And and overwhelming amount of Japanese unanimously do not know English at all whatsoever.
@DaFawky FFS, you're not getting it. How could an English-language website (which is what YOU called it) be the THIRD-most-popular website in a country if no one in the country can speak English?
It would be like a CHINESE website being the third-most-popular website in the US—it COULDN'T happen unless there were dozens of millions of Americans literate in Chinese.
And stop saying that the Japanese don't know English. That ain't the point. The point is that they know even less Korean.
@VictimOfBoredom It's what *I* call it because that's what IT *IS*.
You're the one not getting it. The fact that most Thais use Youtube doesn't invalidate the fact that most Thais don't speak English and most users on youtube are from English speaking countries. One does not invalidate the other. Just because a CHINESE website CAN be popular in the US, that does NOT mean we know Chinese, and does NOT mean that most people on that Chinese website are people from non-Chinese speaking countries.
@DaFawky Studying English is legally mandatory for all students in Thailand, and it's by far the most commonly studied language in Japan and Indonesia as well. I've housed dozens upon dozens of international homestay students from East and Southeast Asia over the past half-decade or so, including dozens from Japan, and NONE of the non-Koreans spoke much, if any, Korean, though they obviously all spoke English.
@VictimOfBoredom That's what I'm saying, Japanese *HAVE* to study English in school their whole lives- That doesn't mean they actually *KNOW* the language. The average Japanese(99.9% of the population) will only know how to say "Hello" and "cool dude" and then the conversation stops there.
All style and no substance. That is the problem with pop music. Just crap created to sell records and make record executives millions of dollars. This is not music or art. This is just a product.
@Chaoitcme You're making it sound like there's anything wrong with that. Not everyone on this world can appreciate fine arts and in my opinion, there's no problem with that, at all.
Asia pop music will never draw a dime in the USA or Europe. The cultural gap is just too strong. Perhaps in many years when there is no individual culture and just the same shit everywhere it might, but not now.
@youngbuck189 are you sure? maybe you should do a bit research on the subject. Kpop for example is immensely popular among Asian Americans today, and a considerable number of non-Asians also, so much that bands like SNSD and 2PM have held concerts/tours in North A. and even Europe. SNSD's mv Gee has over 64 million views on YouTube. They're certainly making more than a "dime" in USA/EU. Although they'll never reach the level of success as their western counterparts.
@jachina I'm sure. Asian Americans are not a large population. Heavy metal bands still tour the world, but their drawing power is 1/10 what it was 20 years ago. It doesn't matter if you tour the world, that doesn't make you a success. Youtube is not a good judge of this subject. I'm not knowing your music, I'm sure you love it. It's just not ever going to draw in the USA or Europe. It's like saying American country music will take over Asia, it's never going to happen.
@youngbuck189 american pop is accepted in korea(so obviously it's not the issue of cultural gap)...music transcend boundaries pop music all over the world contains pretty much similar lyrics & meaning.but the reality is most americans(majority of whom are european/white background) are less likely to accept ASIAN looking entertainers(not just from asia but even asian americans born in america)....they don't see asian people as being COOL & legit enough to be adored upon despite their talent
@VictimOfBoredom well...mike shinoda(never heard of him)..googled him..dude doesn't look asian at all...he looks latino or even southern european(e.g. italian, spanish, portuguese). .....show me an enterainer that is full asian descent(with asian facial features) that has achieved stardom in america..um...NONE..don't say charice cuz she's not A list or even B list..though girl can sing her ass off!!!no doubt about her talent...asian entertainers face a glass ceiling in thewest
He's the co-frontman of one of the biggest American bands of the past decade—Linkin Park (50 million albums sold). Not to mention, the DJ of that band is also full Korean.
@VictimOfBoredom half white(half asian) entertainers are more likely to be accepted by mainstream american media. it's not that asian americans (who are born and raised in america) lack talent...their ethnic makeup is their barrier unfortunately...they can make it as directors, producers, etc...but as the main love interest or a pop star or even hip hop star, their chances are very little...
Asian Bands will always have extremely limited market appeal in the West. The problem is that most Westerners don't much care for Gooks, Chinks and Japs. However their guys would do very well in a 'I Don't want No Man With a Short Short Dick,' Contest.
It is sad. Worst music ever. Its all about tits and looks and being "cuuute". This K-Pop trend will never prevail....there is just too little behind it.
@hakirby no difference I agree. But I live in Thailand and here I have to take in K-Pop pretty much everywhere I go.....which is very annoying. Im not in the age anymore where I listen to a teenage girl band consisting of 35 "band" members jumping around to cheezy tunes that sound like out of a Super Mario game.

I'm Korean. As long as I know, in K-pop there are far more Korean producers and others else than American.
The entertainment agencies that hire American producers or composers are mostly
SM and JYP. The Boys by SNSD and The DJ Is Mine by Wonder Girls are
the songs of typical American melody, style and feeling,
but didn't make that hit.
Except a few songs, the songs of big hit in Korea are
mostly the ones by Korean producers and composers.

And talking abo

k pop is doing pretty well in the continent of asia including regions in Southeast Asia as well as South Asia(e.g.India, Nepal) & even in Muslim countries in the middle east....so why try so hard to get the approval of the west? they don't give up a fuck..atleast most of 'em don't...get on with your success in Asia..after all asia is the biggest continent in the world..that's a huge market right there..concentrate on getting even bigger in Asia..stop wasting u'r time on western markets.
heomak 1 month ago
it's crazy how military like the korean pop industry is..they groom/train young singers(from the age of 13-14 ) until it's time to officially debut...they live away from their families in dorms and eat and live there following rules set by the music producer. i watched BIG BANG(one of k pop's biggest boy band) documentary where they showed that....that makes it seem a little less genuine and organiz compared to other pop industries around the world.

@DaFawky Thais, Filipinos, Japanese, and Indonesians are more likely to understand English than Korean.
Doesn't take a rocket scientist to deduce this...
VictimOfBoredom 1 month ago
@VictimOfBoredom I don't know about you but to my knowledge Japanese and Thais don't know shit about English. If anything, I'd expect a Japanese to know more Korean than English. Japanese are taught English in schools but yet almost NO ONE in Japan really knows English. Filipinos know English though. Nice try at being a smartass, but you failed. try again. :)
DaFawky 1 month ago
@DaFawky Sorry, but it's a FACT that Japanese and Thais are more likely to know English than Korean. This isn't really a subjective matter of opinion—go to ANY Kpop video on YouTube, and the Southeast Asians will be leaving comments in either their native languages or English—NOT Korean.
I guess me saying Europeans are more likely to speak English than Italian would also be me being a "smartass", eh?
Would I also be a "smartass" for stating the earth revolves around the sun?
VictimOfBoredom 1 month ago
@VictimOfBoredom Sorry, but Japanese are not Southeast Asian, and almost EVERY Japanese person DOES NOT know English. AT all. THAT is a definite FACT. The only people I see leaving English comments are people from the Philippines, and Asian expats from America and Australia. I'm from Hawaii and am mixed myself. I'm not foreign to anything you're talking about. over-exaggerating drama queen. LOL you act as if it's 'common sense' to know what SECOND language some country in South East asia speaks.
DaFawky 1 month ago
@DaFawky
*facepalm*
I wasn't referring to the Japanese when I said "Southeast Asian".
English being the most common foreign language isn't just unique to Southeast Asians and the Japanese—in case you've been living under a rock for over the past century, it's a WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON. Are you seriously unaware of the fact that people from two different non-English-speaking countries that don't speak the same language will invariably use English to communicate with each other? -_-
VictimOfBoredom 1 month ago
@VictimOfBoredom *facepalm* Why would you mention BOTH Thai AND Japanese speaking English and THEN say "Oh, well I see a lot of SOUTHEAST Asians talking in English on this website". Japanese aren't Southeast Asian, so that really contradicts what you said about Japanese knowing English. Japanese almost unanimously do not know English. In case you live in a rock, Korea is in ASIA.
DaFawky 1 month ago
@DaFawky Good grief. The second statement was a SEPARATE statement from the first. Japanese watch videos with Japanese titles and leave comments in Japanese, so I didn't include them along with Southeast Asians, who are more likely to watch videos with English titles and leave comments in English.
Almost all students graduating high school in Japan have had several years of English language education. The same cannot be said of Korean. This really isn't that controversial. -_-
VictimOfBoredom 1 month ago
@VictimOfBoredom doesn't matter if it was separate or not, it still contradicts what you said about Japanese knowing English. If they knew English like filipinos, then you'd Say "I see lots of East and Southeast Asians commenting in English." Of course they only go to Japanese videos & speak Japanese, no one in Japan knows English! LOL
AGAIN, like I said, Japanese HAVE to study English in school.. That does NOT reflect their ACTUAL knowledge of English. Most are illiterate. Not fluent at all.
DaFawky 1 month ago
@DaFawky The point was NEVER that Japanese simply "know English"—the point is that they know English MORE than they know Korean.
Americans UNDOUBTEDLY know Spanish more than they know Portuguese, but that doesn't mean Americans all use the Internet in Spanish. The same is true of the Japanese with respect to English. Southeast Asians are more likely to use English because the Internet communities in their native languages aren't as well-developed.
VictimOfBoredom 1 month ago

DaFawky 1 month ago
@DaFawky Most leave ENGLISH comments because it's an ENGLISH website, dumbass. Of course on an AMERICAN website, people not from the US are going to speak English anyway. Most Koreans don't even use youtube, there would be NO reason that people not from Korea would be speaking Korean, unless it was with another Korean. And sorry, but most Japanese do not know English at all. If anything, a zainichi would know Korean.
DaFawky 1 month ago
@DaFawky YouTube is not an intrinsically English website—the settings can be changed to any of dozens of languages, and of course video titles and video comments can be in whatever language the uploaders and commenters want. -_-
VictimOfBoredom 1 month ago
@VictimOfBoredom -____- that goes for ANY website. But intrinsically it is by default an English website, as it is made by Americans. That is why most users here are going to know English or be from an English country.
DaFawky 1 month ago
@DaFawky YouTube is the third-most-popular website in Thailand and the fourth-most-popular website in both Indonesia and Japan (source: Alexa). According to your claim that only people who know English are going to visit YouTube, that PROVES that knowing English is common amongst Thais, Indonesians, and Japanese. THANK YOU!
VictimOfBoredom 1 month ago
@VictimOfBoredom That doesn't prove shit. There's a difference between "Youtube is the third most popular website in Thailand" and "Thailand is the third-most-popular country to use Youtube". So my comment about most youtube users knowing English or being from an English speaking country is still true. Most thais do not know English. And and overwhelming amount of Japanese unanimously do not know English at all whatsoever.
DaFawky 1 month ago
@DaFawky FFS, you're not getting it. How could an English-language website (which is what YOU called it) be the THIRD-most-popular website in a country if no one in the country can speak English?
It would be like a CHINESE website being the third-most-popular website in the US—it COULDN'T happen unless there were dozens of millions of Americans literate in Chinese.
And stop saying that the Japanese don't know English. That ain't the point. The point is that they know even less Korean.
VictimOfBoredom 1 month ago
@VictimOfBoredom It's what *I* call it because that's what IT *IS*.
You're the one not getting it. The fact that most Thais use Youtube doesn't invalidate the fact that most Thais don't speak English and most users on youtube are from English speaking countries. One does not invalidate the other. Just because a CHINESE website CAN be popular in the US, that does NOT mean we know Chinese, and does NOT mean that most people on that Chinese website are people from non-Chinese speaking countries.
DaFawky 1 month ago
@DaFawky Studying English is legally mandatory for all students in Thailand, and it's by far the most commonly studied language in Japan and Indonesia as well. I've housed dozens upon dozens of international homestay students from East and Southeast Asia over the past half-decade or so, including dozens from Japan, and NONE of the non-Koreans spoke much, if any, Korean, though they obviously all spoke English.
VictimOfBoredom 1 month ago
@VictimOfBoredom That's what I'm saying, Japanese *HAVE* to study English in school their whole lives- That doesn't mean they actually *KNOW* the language. The average Japanese(99.9% of the population) will only know how to say "Hello" and "cool dude" and then the conversation stops there.

Asia pop music will never draw a dime in the USA or Europe. The cultural gap is just too strong. Perhaps in many years when there is no individual culture and just the same shit everywhere it might, but not now.
youngbuck189 1 month ago 10
@youngbuck189 are you sure? maybe you should do a bit research on the subject. Kpop for example is immensely popular among Asian Americans today, and a considerable number of non-Asians also, so much that bands like SNSD and 2PM have held concerts/tours in North A. and even Europe. SNSD's mv Gee has over 64 million views on YouTube. They're certainly making more than a "dime" in USA/EU. Although they'll never reach the level of success as their western counterparts.
jachina 1 month ago
@jachina I'm sure. Asian Americans are not a large population. Heavy metal bands still tour the world, but their drawing power is 1/10 what it was 20 years ago. It doesn't matter if you tour the world, that doesn't make you a success. Youtube is not a good judge of this subject. I'm not knowing your music, I'm sure you love it. It's just not ever going to draw in the USA or Europe. It's like saying American country music will take over Asia, it's never going to happen.
youngbuck189 1 month ago
@youngbuck189 american pop is accepted in korea(so obviously it's not the issue of cultural gap)...music transcend boundaries pop music all over the world contains pretty much similar lyrics & meaning.but the reality is most americans(majority of whom are european/white background) are less likely to accept ASIAN looking entertainers(not just from asia but even asian americans born in america)....they don't see asian people as being COOL & legit enough to be adored upon despite their talent

@VictimOfBoredom no he's not...please do your research...look at his damn face.
his dad is japanese but his mom is definitely not japanese...i'm guessing she's european american/white american(same thing).
heomak 1 month ago
@VictimOfBoredom half white(half asian) entertainers are more likely to be accepted by mainstream american media. it's not that asian americans (who are born and raised in america) lack talent...their ethnic makeup is their barrier unfortunately...they can make it as directors, producers, etc...but as the main love interest or a pop star or even hip hop star, their chances are very little...
