  • i love ari up(R.I.P.) the slits/cut is one of the greatest musical achievements ever recorded, it still sounds ahead of its time!

  • ...And remember folks, we are ALL! originated from Africa. So why be suprised that Africas DNA manifests itself regardless of colour and nationality.

  • In the early 80s when i worked as an employment officer i would often interview a White Rastafarian: blue eyed, blond, dreadclocks, with a very thick Jamaican accent. It was his choice. He loved jamaican Culture. I think his appearance prevented him from getting a job, but he never compromised. At first I (a West Indian) was sceptical thinking this was just a fad, but it wasnt a fad. Many people are born into the wrong gender, perhaps its the same with culture. If you can change 2 b happy, good!

  • Hey we are putting on a tribute event for Ari Up in Bristol with Tessa Pollitt, Hollie Cook, Viv Albertine, Adrian Sherwood and Mark Stewart! Please watch our ad youtube.com/watch?v=qE5BCjxH5gM and check out our facebook event if you are interested? Big Love

  • rip but why is she talking like she from Jamaica when she from london

  • @osker450 theres a big carribean culture in london dude. massive and freakin awesome!

  • @shnakwa1 i know that m8 but her dad was jonny rotten i think im from uk listen 2 reggie but i dont try n talk like stephen marley

  • @osker450 i don't think johnny rotten could have had her at age 6. he was born in 1956 and her, 1962.

Also who knows n cares about how she talks. maybe she just hangs out with Caribbean people all the time, or its her weird old german accent chilled out accent mixed with a UK/carribean tone.

  • CONT' D

why does she have 2 sound like a "white"-londoner that you have prejudged her to be? should she just stick 2 her own kind and 'emulate' them - even though we try to emulate our stars, heros role models here and there... stars, heros and rolemodels can also emulate others or grow up around others without having to conform to their stereotype. u must be taking the piss....

  • @shnakwa1 just saying if i walked round saying ya man rasta n all that id get laughed at i like her music just saying

  • @osker450

yeah you'd prob get laughed at because it's not genuine, its not based on anything genuine, except for the real fact that you think their accent and the way they talk is humorous, or perhaps you just find the accent appealing...

you would get laughed, quite simply, because you are not Ari Up. Sorry to break it to you. You are not her and all her many facets, and she had a completely different life to you.

Youre just saying because you assumed she was a white londoner who has conformed

  • geez dude ive already tried to explain it to you. i'll explain it again:

here's an example: If you were a guy who originally had a UK accent as a kid or a teenager or whatever and went to China, or Australia, or Canada, or South African, London - where there is a high population of carribean's - then i think some of that CULTURE would rub off of them onto you, don't you think?

and no. johnny rotten was not her father. 6 cannot have children.

  • a 6 year old cannot have children

Are you like 15 or something, or in your early 20's, or immature? or really just not that much of a thinker and possible ignorant?

    don't worry its okay.

  • also, you weren't "just saying" if u look at your original post again you actually asked why? and what happens when someone asks a question? Someone might answer it/try to answer it.

  • @osker450

as long as they understand each other and Ari got her messages across to the people featured in the clip and the people featured in the clip got their message across... then, who really cares if she spoke the way she did? they were still communicating with each other, and it looked like the communication was effective.

  • @shnakwa1 was that essay really necessary? talk about over-opinionated. jesus.

and what you said was a load of bullshit too. i mean, do you really think that she spoke with a jamaican accent because she lived around a lot of jamaicans and it naturally rubbed off on her? an accent that thick? give me a fucking break.

she was an eccentric and a huge reggae fan. she affected that accent to a large degree. particularly around the jamaicans in this clip.

  • @StevieWondersWhy24

meh so over why she talks about it. who cares.

as long as she was happy.

  • @shnakwa1 I agree. I like her. But she didn't get an accent that thick by spending a lot of time around Carribean people.

  • Ari Up... I guess now, you're really "up". Queen of Punk. We love the slits!

It's sad that there's a "conflict" between the punk rock culture and the progressive rock bands like pink floyd... I think both genres are great, in their own way.

  • @2c26 Queen of punk? No, never. All I can say is Nancy Spungen.

I'd rather say - Princess of punk about Ari Up.

  • @takidagurl to be a QUEEN you have to actually have done something beyond DATE a punk rocker. Ari lived the punk lifestyle through and through for herself. Not for someone else.

  • @priorzola And so did Nancy. She lived the punk lifestyle and she was famous before she met Sid :) She would have done even better if she didn't die that young. Ari had the chance to show the world. Nancy never got that chance. And thinking about how much she accomplished before she died I would have wanted to see how famous she would have been if she'd been alive now.

  • @takidagurl Ari lived for her music. Nancy lived (and died) for a drug.

  • @priorzola Nancy lived for the music, as well. She was ill and the drugs were the only thing that could hide the illness to herself. She didn't die of an overdose, you knew she was killed, right?

  • @takidagurl yes, she died with her junkie boyfriend most likely by him or a drug dealer. That's called dying for a drug. Still, Ari actually has a catalog of actual musical accomplishments. Nancy does not. There is no comparison.

  • God i loved her and the slits.

  • She was beautiful, and all I can say is that I loved her. xxx

  • In the first minute she says, I am a veteran and pioneer...If you have to say that of yourself, you are neither one...She's German and was born of fairly rich family and now she's running around sporting shitlocks and talking all Jamaican to convince New York trash that she is cooler than she is......What a stupid bitch...I appreciate some of the cool tunes you made but this act is just plain shit for the benefit of shit...

  • @THATOTHERGUY321 I have to agree with the first part you said, to crown yourself is very..Kanye West-ish/Lady Gaga-ish. And takes away from credibility BUT..SHE unlike the two I named, learned to play guitar from Joe Strummer of THE CLASH..her mom married JOHNNY ROTTEN. Hendrix visited her house, and Jon Anderson is her Godfather. She HAS a little bit of leeway in claiming what she claims. PLUS she lived in Jamaica for years and has respect musically there.Where's your place to say what you say?

  • @THATOTHERGUY321 Totes. I'm sure she believes it but her platitudes about being 'real' are rot.

  • RIP?!? What?!?

  • Saw them many times in 1979 - still so far ahead and already sorely missed.....

  • Just to address a factual error in the OP: the Slits were not an "all-girl" punk band. Although originally formed with "Palmolive" - a woman - on drums, all their recordings were made with a man in the band. First was Budgie (Siouxsie and the Banshees, Creatures, ) on Drums (the Cut album), and later (from 1980 through dissolution), Bruce Smith (The Pop Group, Pigbag) on drums.

  • @orchidtender Budgie dropped in on their 1979 Cut album but before that they were an all women band.

  • rip,, what a great spirit

  • @MrMeddled She was born in Germany but raise mostly in Jamaica so the accent might of came up as she assimilated there, or she could be faking.. -- but who really fucking cares...

  • RIP Ari. She loved Reggae. The Slits and The Clash both brought Reggae and Punk together brilliantly and I am very grateful for that personally.. Rock in peace Punk Reggae Queen. She's probably up with Joe now in another world having a spliff...

  • @MrMeddled Yah, she is for real. She was born in Germany, but lived in Jamaica for years. Hence, the Jamaican accent on the top. hehehe Look up her Mom (Nora Forster) She is a trip!
