@StarHorseLover1 the baby needs to breath and the mother needs to relax. what would happen if the mother just layed down to take a breath and the baby was still in the bag supphocating? only certian animals ALWAYS take the bag off their young.
Bloody travellers, bout rite! I'm soo glad that they're back with you & I'm sure they'll be back to themselves now they're with their mum. Give them a cuddle from me! x
Just to let people know, the little mare in this video was stolen from her field in biggleswade, bedfordshire on 17th february, the fence was smashed and the barn door ripped off its hinges and Pride and two piebald colts were taken. Please be vigilant, there are some very unscrupulous people out there!!... be safe Pridey, we are searching for you...xxx
I am sooooo sorry ....I sure hope you find them and they come back home...There are lazy no good people out there that think of ways to steal things that are not theirs...because they are to lazy to work to get things themselves...My prayers are with you and your little ones....please keep us updated.
wow i'm so sorry. I don't know why anyone would steal a horse because i think it'd be a very hard thing to hide. I really hope you find it. Beautiful horse, beautiful baby!
After 3 weeks and much searching and a confrontation with "travellers" we now have Pride and our other two ponies home. /they are in dreadful conditon and sadly it seems Pride has lost the foal she was carrying. but with plenty of ttlc we hope they will heal physically and mentally.
I am so Glad u found them. Realy sorry about the foal :(. And to think some one would atualy do this to Poor helples animals, its just down rite rong ! Hope the horses are better now.

P.s I am hoping to be in the Rspca when i'm older so that i can help stop these things happening !
The lady clearly knew what she was doing with her mare, I've done foalings before and a little help is needed for the mare sometimes. . The mare was struggling so a little help does nobody any harm, congrats on the little one, what a beauty. the tail plait is used to keep her tail out the way. and i didn't think the tail plait was that bad either lol
they are best left to foal unassisted if at all possible, after all nature makes most mares more than capable of giving birth to their babies without human intervention, whilst being monitored to be sure all is well, the only reason she needed assistance this time, (she is an experienced broodmare) is that the foal was slightly shoulder locked which was easily,,,and not at all roughly, put to rights, she then gave birth to a very healthy foal and both she nad her baby are fine!!!...
We have been breeding horses, ponies and donkeys for well over 30 years and are well versed in delivering foals!!!!..we have at least 10 foals every year and have saved plenty of foals lives that would otherwise have perished if the mare had foaled alone!!!..
I don't think you are supposed to break the sack until the foal is out past it's shoulders. And when pulling, doing so when the mare has a contraction makes it easier for both her and you.
congrats on the new foal, were i ride they used to breed, i saw several foalings, it may seem gross looking to some people, but when the foals are dried off they are adorable!
lovelly pony and foal my two shetlands are black and the other one is the same colour as your mare shes due to give birth in 2 weeks hope mine goes aswell!!
I'm big on animal safety... and telling the truth this was extremely well handled. Soooo all you dinks out there with your bullshit comments may wanna take a closer look. This was handled just fine =\, and someone said she was reefing on the baby or something ... -_- she was pulling with the contractions its clear if you take a damn look.
Should never tear the membrane until the shoulders are clear of the birth canal. If the mare stands back up, the foal retreats into the canal, drawing fluid into it's lungs, possibly drowning it. They don't need to breath until the sack is broken and air hits their faces. Just a tip for next time. :)
The membrane was already torn!!!....No way foal was going back in anyways...thanks for the tip but have foaled hundreds of mares over the last 40 odd years!
I couldn't see that the membrane was torn, so apologies are in order, and you have them. You had the advantage of actually being there and had a better angle than I! I've foaled quite a few myself, isn't it neat? Love watching them figure out what happened and where they are!
I do love foaling time, although can be stressful and very tiring! I spend most of the summer sleeping in the barn with the mares. We have had some difficult births and this particular little mare had previously lost two foals at birth after having one of their forelegs back, this was before I bought her,!! luckily this birth was relatively straighfoward and foalie had all his legs where they should be...( I had checked his position as soon as the waters broke).
I'm glad she finally got to have a successful birth. The mare's a cutie, but then, it's hard to find a Shetland that's not! A long time ago when I was a teenager, I had one with my horses and one of my mares went through a false pregnancy, even producing milk! She decided that the Shetland was her baby, and it was both funny and sad how she was trying to get the Shetland to nurse. She just wanted to have her own, I guess.
Wat scares me is when the mares satnd up when they are almost done foaling and the colt or filly is just dangaling there! I know it's natural but it's just so creppy!
I know how hard it is to get a good video of a foaling, I have tried many times but it is hard, especially during the night. Your video is good and you care for your ponies as we do.
We have been breeding horses for over 30 years...We only intervene during the birth if it goes on for too long or the foal is stuck or malpresented.....this time the foal's shoulders were caught but soon rectified, they are usually quite capble of giving birth without anyone pulling on them.
welcome to the world sweet little foal how cute are yuo guys together mummy and baby!
