Hi, thank you for the video - I found it very informative! I'm thinking of doing Japanese for GCSE but my school don't offer it so I'd have to do it at a center and study it by my self with the help of textbooks, ect. Since I'm interested in the culture and listen to Japanese music, watch movies, ect, I have a general understanding of the language. I'm currently in year 9 and choose my options in 2 weeks time! Do you think I'd be able to do it by myself in these almost-three years that I have?
@lilpwincess98 If you're doing it at a centre with teachers you'll definitely be fine. If you're passionate and have something to learn it for then you be fine learning it through self-study so yeah I'd say you can do it! :)
Everyone here's toms latest tweet:- My Japanese wants me to enter a Japanese speech contest but I don't know if I should or not, first prize is a trip to Japan but I'm not sure. If I get through I'd have to go to London in June and it's just more stress, not sure if it's worth it. I think that we should all show our support, I mean wouldn't say that he should defenetly go to Japan but I still think that he should know that we are all behind him. Tom FTW (^_^ )マシン
Just out of interest, are you thinking of learning korean as well? I am korean and I particularly find japanese less challenging than it would have been for others in different cultural areas. The grammar is almost identical and the vocabulary are really similare to each other as well as the pronunciation :) I think the reason is that Korea, Japan and China all use original chinese kanji, just like all european countries having their languages similar to each other and finding it relatively eas
Thank you very much! I find your videos really helpful! I feel really awkward to be the only one in the whole school to take gcse japanese :( what would you say to the difference between original chinese kanji and japanese kanji? As you probably know, japanese kanjis are originated from china and have been altered, which is why I find it confusing when the letter itself does not exist or is altered when I look up a chinese kanji on japanes kanji dictionary.
@kukluxklang77 Thanks :) Don't feel awkward, chances are some people are doing other exams on their own. I don't really know what to say about the different kanji because I don't learn a Chinese language but I'm sure that after a while they will separate in your brain if that makes sense. And yeah I would like to learn Korean but I have too much on my plate at the moment ahaha. Yeah I've heard the grammar's really similar :) I can read a bit of hangul but not much.
Oxford Brookes University myself :) 4 year course, with a year abroad next year. Incredible city to study in. ^_^
As for writing Kanji, I think it's more of a lack of time thing for me. I can read just under 250, but would need the summer or Christmas holidays to really revise them to the extent that I can write them out without something to look at ^_^ Writing-wise I could probably do 50! La shame.
500 is not that bad if you REALLY know them and I believe you do. I think I know between 300 and 500 but I don't practice writing so I can't write at all. If you practice writing them out on paper then you know more than me with that already.
@forgottenmemories21 well that's not bad either :) I always write my kanji down, as well as making the kanji stick in your head I think it develops your Japanese handwriting. (Most people learning Japanese write like 5 year olds I've noticed - not that that's anything to be ashamed of :) )
Ah fascinating :D I'm just about to go into a second-year Japanese exam at university this weekend, and I still think GCSE Japanese would probably give me a run for my money :P Especially the little essay section. And knowing how to write 200 Kanji. It's something I need to find the time to learn. My university exams mainly focus on reading, with writing left for coursework.
